World Gym was founded in 1976 by Joe Gold during the glory days of “Muscle Beach” in Venice, California. Since that time, World Gym has evolved into an internationally recognized brand.

World Gym currently has approximately 200 franchisees world wide, located in 36 states and in Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, Australia, Taiwan, South Korea, India, Egypt, and the UAE. Plans include further global expansion of the franchise network and the opening of regional flagship gyms.

Planet Fitness bought World Gym in 2006 for more than $10 million, with both clubs to serve "different types of health club goers" according to Chris Rondeau, CEO of franchising for World Gym.^[1] Planet Fitness put the gym chain up for sale in July 2008 and it was purchased on December 31, 2008 by the Joyce J. Cammilleri family, who announced that the company would return to southern California.^[2]
