Zaventem (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈzaˑvəntɛm]) is a municipality in the province of Flemish Brabant, in Flanders, one of the three regions of Belgium. The municipality comprises the towns of Nossegem, Sint-Stevens-Woluwe, Sterrebeek and Zaventem proper. On January 1, 2006 Zaventem had a total population of 28,651. The total area is 27.62 km² which gives a population density of 1,037 inhabitants per km².

Brussels Airport is located in this municipality. The official language is Dutch (as everywhere in Flanders). Small local minorities consist of nationals from many European Union-countries, USA and Canada, and from French-speakers. The French-speaking minority is represented by 6 members on the 29-seat local council. An old name of the municipality is Saventhem. Railway stations in the municipality include Zaventem, Brussels Airport and Nossegem. The postal code of the municipality is 1930. [edit] Government and infrastructureThe Zaventem Fire Department (Brandweer Zaventem in Dutch) provides fire protection services.[1] [edit] EconomyBrussels Airlines has its corporate headquarters in the b.house on the grounds of Brussels Airport in Zaventem.[2] Brussels Airlines formed in 2006 as a result of a merger between SN Brussels and Virgin Express.[3] Prior to the merger, Virgin Express had its head office on the grounds of the airport in Zaventem.[4] SN Brussels, which formed in 2002, had its head office in Airport Building 117.[5] Prior to its disestablishment, Sabena had its head office in the Sabena House in Zaventem.[6] [edit] EducationSchools in Zaventem include Gemeentelijke Basisschool nr 1, Gemeentelijke Basisschool nr 2, and Gemeentelijke Academie voor Muziek, Woord en Dans.[7] Brussels American School (the United States Department of Defense school) is in Zaventem.
