yotta (symbol Y) is a prefix in the International System of Units (SI) denoting a factor of 10²⁴ or 1000000000000000000000000.

Added to the SI in 1991, it is derived from the Greek ὀκτώ (októ)^{[citation needed]}, meaning eight, because it is equal to 1000⁸.

Before the adoption of the yotta prefix, the multiple was also known as otta.

Examples:

• the mass of the Earth is 5973.6 Yg^[1][2] (although as large mass units are based on the tonne, this would be more likely expressed as 5.97 Zt).
• the total power output of the Sun is approximately 383 YW.
• the known universe is estimated to be 880 Ym in diameter.
• the average power released by Tsar Bomba was 5.4 YW^{[citation needed]}

The metric system was introduced in 1795 with six prefixes. The other dates relate to recognition by a resolution of the CGPM. The 1948 recognition of the micron by the CGPM was abrogated in 1967.
