The York Region Shooters were a soccer team playing in the Canadian Professional Soccer League from 1998-2002. They played their home matches in the town of Aurora, Ontario, north of Toronto. The franchise was one of the original teams of the CPSL. The team had its origins in the York Region Soccer League and were previously known as the York Region Stallions. In 2003, the York Region Shooters were sold by the Bisceglia family to what is now called the Italia Shooters, as the Vaughan Sun Devils, and reached the finals before losing to the Brampton Hitmen on October 5, 2003.
[edit] History[edit] 1998In 1998, the York Region Shooters were founded and were signed to the Canadian Professional Soccer League and finished in 5th place with a total of 17 points, and did not qualify for the playoffs in their debut year. [edit] 1998 Standings
[edit] 1999In 1999, The York Region Shooters finished 7th. The Shooters finished in 7th place, with 12 points, and failed to qualify for the playoffs once again. [edit] 1999 Standings
[edit] 2000In 2000, the Shooters matched their 1998 standings, 5th place with 14 points. Shooters forward Willy Giummarra was honoured with the 2000 CPSL MVP award. [edit] 2000 Standings

[edit] 2002In 2002, the Canadian Professional Soccer League announced the addition of the Eastern and Western Conference divisions, with the Shooters assigned to the East. The Shooters finished 4th, and just missed a playoff spot. [edit] 2002 Standings
[edit] DissolvingIn April 2003, the York Region Shooters announced that they had folded after having played a total of 83 games from 1998-2002. [edit] 2003 RevivedIn 2003, The York Region Shooters were absorbed by the Vaughan Sun Devils, and posted a 3rd place performance with 28 points, and for the first time in 5 years clinched a playoff spot. [edit] 2003 PlayoffsThe 2003 playoffs were great for the Sun Devils, as they made it to the championship match against the Brampton Hitmen on October 5, 2003, but lost 1-0. Hitmen striker Kurt Mella scored in the 27th minute, shortly after Sun Devils midfielder Chris Turner was sent off in the 18th minute for receiving a straight red card. [edit] Notable Former Players
