Yaroun (also spelled Yarun and in Arabic يارون) is a Lebanese village located in the Caza of Bint Jbeil in the Nabatiye Governorate in Lebanon.
[edit] GeographyYaroun occupies a hill with elevation ranging from 750 to 900 meters above sea level. The main agricultural products of Yaroun are olive, wheat, and tobacco. Yaroun lies in the border with Israel, which is all of the southern part of the village. It overlooks villages like Avivim, Dovev and Yir'on in the Israeli part of the border. Yaroun is known for its mansions and villas and is considered as one of the wealthiest villages in Lebanon. [edit] DemographyYaroun is divided into Shiite-Muslims and Christians. Ancient Phoenician maps depict Yaroun or Yarun to be one of the earliest Phoenician city states. Some independent studies have shown that a majority of the bloodline found, is that of the Canaanite-Phoenician roots, with minimal true Arab ancestry with exceptions of specific families. [edit] Social LifeWhile the majority of Yarounis visit Yaroun for the summer, approximately 60% to 70% of Yarouni natives reside outside of Lebanon. Most reside in the United States, in cities that include Los Angeles, New York, New Jersey, Dearborn. Other countries where Yarouni Natives live in are Australia, Colombia, and Panama.
[edit] Current EventsIn July 2006, Yaroun, like other villages that string Lebanon's southern border, such as Ain Ebel, Debel,Qaouzah, and Rmaich, was caught in the crossfire of Hezbollah and the Israeli army.[1] Residents of Yaroun were the number one victims in the Salah Al-Deen ponzi scheme with a total loss estimated at $175 million.[2] [edit] References
