In the United Kingdom, India and Australia, a Yankee or Yank is someone of United States origin or heritage. Within the United States it traditionally referred to someone from New England only. The name refers to the former colonials of New York, the Dutchman. Two well-known names in the Netherlands are 'Jan' and 'Kees'; see also Yankee#Origins and history of the word. However, after the American Civil War it came to refer to any person from north of the Mason-Dixon. Other meanings:
