Xinjiang Medical University (XMU) (Chinese: 新疆医科大学; Uyghur: شىنجاڭ تىببىي ئۇنىۋېرسىتېت, Shinjang Tibbiy Universitet) is a university in Ürümqi the capital of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China. It was ratified by the National Ministry of Education in 1998 and entitled by Jiang Zemin. During 60 years of its existence, XMU received attention from a number national and international leaders including the Chinese Communist Party as well as other provincial and urban leaders across the China. Over 50,000 students have been educated at XMU.[2] Covering the three subjects of Medicine, Management and Linguistics, the university has 25 specialities for undergraduate students and 17 specialities for academic education. It also recruits international students under the administration of the International Education College. As of 22nd July, 2009, the university, along with six others in the Peoples Republic of China, has been recognized by the Pakistan Medical & Dental Council[3][4]. It has already been recognized by Medical Council of India.[5]
[edit] History Construction orders by the Chinese government for the construction of FAH and Xinjiang Medical University Chairman Mao Zedong and Premier Zhou Enlai immediately agreeing to Sayfuddin's (Chinese: Seypidin Ezizi) instructions, ordered the Ministry of Health of the People's Republic of China directives to work with the Soviet Union Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Health of the People's Republic of China to build a new medical city in Xinjiang city of Dihua (now the city of Ürümqi).[6] Xinjiang Medical University was then founded with the incorporation of Xinjiang Medical College and the Traditional Chinese Medicine College of Xinjiang Medical University. The former Xinjiang Medical College was formulated and listed by Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai as one of the 156 key projects aided by the former Soviet Union during the First Five-year Plan period and recruitment started in 1956.[7] [edit] SealThe seal of Xinjiang Medical University created in 1956; has a very important role in the administration and student related office works. It is used to certify official paper work issued by the university staff. The usage of this seal is overseen by the administration of the university and guarded by the constitution of the university. [edit] Structure and compositionPresently, XMU has eighteen colleges, five affiliated teaching hospitals, three post-doctorate training centres, four doctorate training centres, 48 master degree training centres of secondary disciplines, five autonomous region special subjects, one provincial level laboratory, two autonomous regional laboratories and eight autonomous regional research centres. XMU is accredited to give Doctor of Medicine doctorate degree (MD) after a seven year course of study.[2] There are total of eighteen colleges in the university, with five of them being under the direct control of the university and three are under non-clinical and affiliated hospitals' administration. [edit] FacultyOf the existing school's faculty there are 1520 full-time teachers and teachers in clinical; of which there are 119 professors, 500 associate professors, 63 doctor advisors, 425 Shuodao, the State Council's provided 52 subject experts, fourteen provincial experts and the Ministry of Health's provided two experts. President is siab and vice is zainny. [edit] CampusThe campus has a number of buildings from the late Russian era in Xinjiang. The university campus has been fully updated and modernized with a library, canteens, hospitals and training centres. There are experimental laboratories with up-to-date bio-information collecting and processing systems, models and so forth. [edit] LibraryUntil 1995 the library contained more than 408,000 books; due to rapid development in the field of student recruitment the university built a new modernized building containing more facilities. The modernized library covers 16000 m2 which currently, has over 1.07 million books, 1,300 different periodicals and journals in Chinese and other languages. Six different kinds of book-databases have been introduced and the database is also connected with Partners Harvard Medical International's library database.[8] The library currently contains seating for 2500 readers in the readers area and more than 350 seats in the electronic library access area.
Every floor has a central area of reading for daily readers; fifth and sixth floor have a dedicated area for the doctoral students writing their thesis. [edit] International Education CollegeThe International Education College of the Xinjiang Medical University (Chinese: 新疆医科大学国际教育学院) is working under the banner of Xinjiang Medical University recruiting medical students since 2001. More than 500 students are studying in the college with a faculty of over 400. The college is allowed to admit 150 students in the 2008/09 session [9]. After being called by the federal government for increment in standards for living and studying, the university was disallowed to take any further students; which was then settled and now the university is allowed to take 150 stuednts for the year 2009/2010 [10].[11] [edit] Subject arrangementIn the first two years, we have to study the basic theoretical subjects such as, anatomy, physiology, histology, embryology, biochemistry, organic & inorganic chemistry to name a few. From third year and onward clinical subjects are the main line of study i.e. gynecology, surgery, internal medicine, pediatrics, E.N.T., neurology, dermatology, psychiatry etc. [edit] College administrationCollege is headed by Dean of International Education, Hyriti Mijiti; being supervised by the party committee members Wu and Zhang. Currently it has a staff of sixteen persons. Including seven deans of classes, two persons in college student administration section, 1 for the hostel accommodation in charge & three for maintaining international & national collaboration. [edit] Hostel and accommodationHostel facility is provided by the International Education College at a standard rate of 4500 RMB/year for one student sharing room with another. Rooms are well furnished and good in condition; TV cable, water facility, electricity facility is provided by the University.And very good environment [edit] Affiliations and accreditations
[edit] AchievementsSince 1998, XMU has won 58 provincial and ministerial level scientific research awards.[16] It is enlisted in the top colleges and universities undergoing scientific research projects in the Autonomous Region and it is the only institution in China to win the "Chinese Medical Academic Award" four times in consecutive years.[16] XMU topped the universities which were being observed by the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
