World of Warcraft: Cataclysm is the third expansion set for the massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) World of Warcraft, following Wrath of the Lich King. It was announced at BlizzCon 2009 on August 21, 2009, though details leaked earlier.[1]

It adds a substantial amount of content to the game world, including two new races (Goblins for the Horde, Worgen for the Alliance), new race/class combinations, entirely redesigned zones, heroic modes for classic dungeons, flying mounts in Azeroth and guild leveling and achievements. It also raises the level cap to 85.[2]

Contents

[edit] Story

Hidden away in a secluded sanctuary, the corrupted Dragon Aspect Deathwing has waited, recovering from the wounds of his last battle against Azeroth and biding his time until he can reforge the world in molten fire.

Soon, Deathwing the Destroyer will return to Azeroth, and his eruption from Deepholm will sunder the world, leaving a festering wound across the continents. As the Horde and Alliance race to the epicenter of the cataclysm, the kingdoms of Azeroth will witness seismic shifts in power, the kindling of a war of the elements, and the emergence of unlikely heroes who will rise up to protect their scarred and broken world from utter devastation.

[edit] New features

  • Level Cap raised to 85.
  • Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor zones are being given aesthetic changes, new towns, as well as new high and low level quests.
  • Several new dungeons and raids are being added such as the Abyssal Maw.
  • Old dungeons, such as The Deadmines and Shadowfang Keep, will be revamped into level 85 dungeons with normal and heroic difficulties.
  • New Battlegrounds, such as "Battle for Gilneas City", as well as a new World-PvP zone, similar to Wintergrasp, Tol Barad.
  • Archaeology, a new secondary skill.
  • Flying mounts will be usable in Azeroth.

[edit] New playable races

Cataclysm will introduce two new playable races. The Alliance Worgen, and the Horde Goblins.

[edit] Worgen

The Worgen are a race of feral wolf-beasts whose very name inspires fear. Theories regarding their history abound, yet the worgen's origins remain steeped in mystery. The curse of the Worgen has extended into Gilneas, where the curse rapidly reached pandemic levels.

There are those among the Gilneas, however, who cling to hope. Many believe that a treatment for the worgen curse may exist, although others have nearly given up, fearful that if the barricades should fall, their humanity will be lost forever.

Their homeland is also currently under siege by the Forsaken Undead of the Undercity, a new Player vs. Player Battleground has also been announced at the Blizzards' annual convention "The Battle for Gilneas" is based on the current siege.

Classes available to the Worgen will be Death Knight, Druid, Hunter, Mage, Priest, Rogue, Warlock and Warrior.

[edit] Goblins

By the end of the Third War, goblins were providing weaponry, vehicles, and devious services to both the Horde and the Alliance. This wouldn't last forever...

Recently, the goblins of Kezan have found a new enemy in the Alliance – unexpected and unprofitable encounters with this faction have driven certain goblins from their comfortable neutrality. Reforging old pacts with their one-time allies, the goblins have been welcomed into the Horde with open arms.

Classes available to the Goblins are Death Knight, Hunter, Mage, Priest, Rogue, Shaman, Warlock and Warrior.

[edit] New class combinations

In addition to the new races, the current races are being granted new class combinations.[3] New Alliance class combinations include:

  • Human Hunter
  • Dwarf Shaman
  • Dwarf Mage
  • Night Elf Mage
  • Gnome Priest

New Horde class combinations include:

  • Orc Mage
  • Undead Hunter
  • Tauren Paladin
  • Tauren Priest
  • Troll Druid
  • Blood Elf Warrior
