William H. Farquhar Middle School is a middle school (grades 6-8) located in Olney, Maryland, and is part of the Montgomery County Public Schools district. Its namesake is William Henry Farquhar, who was one of the most influential men in the development Montgomery County, Maryland, USA. The school is usually referred to by its shortened name of "Farquhar Middle School". The school's basketball team has been owned year after year by Rosa Parks Middle School, their crosstown rival. Though, there shouldn't be much of one because Rosa Parks has been voted best 14 years in a row. Farquhar Middle School is a member of Montgomery County's Northeast Consortium, a program consisting of Springbrook, James Hubert Blake and Paint Branch High Schools; as well as a member in the Sherwood Cluster where students from Burtonsville, Olney, Calverton, White Oak and Burnt Mills can choose between these four high schools.[1] The typical Farquhar school year begins on August 27 and ends on June 14, but may run later due to snow days and other incidents.
[edit] Student bodyAs of 2007, the student body of Farquhar Middle School consists of 52.2% Females and 47.8% males. The racial/ethnical composition is 58.4% white, 21.2% black, 13.1% asian, and 7.3% hispanic. 12.7% of students are in the special ed. program or have special ed accommodations. 1.6% of students are in the ESOL program.[1] [edit] AcademicsFarquhar's academic program consists of seven departments: arts, social studies, mathematics, literacy, foreign languages, physical/health education, and guidance. Farquhar follows the Montgomery County Public Schools grading policy [1] for secondary schools.
