Is it really best to have this page in a four-column layout? I've got my browser's text size set to "smaller" (as opposed to "larger") and still have 1) a horizontal scroll bar, and 2) a sizable number of items that have word-wrapped to a second line. Perhaps a more vertical layout is called for: annoying as they can be, it's often less annoying than having to scroll horizontallly, too.  — AnnaKucsma   (Talk to me!) 21:10, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

Why is there a "General" header here? I don't understand its contents. As a word, general seems to be the same as miscellaneous. In puzzlement, your friend, GeorgeLouis (talk) 17:17, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

"General" is for the coarsest and most general stub templates and categories - that is, for the catch-all types used before stubs have been further sorted into one of the many subtypes. "Miscellaneous" is for subtypes that don't naturally fit under one of the other headings. Thus, for instance, {{Stub}}, the most basic unsorted template, goes under "General", but {{Philately-stub}} - a sorted type which doesn't fit any of the other headings - goes under "Miscellaneous". Not quite - deprecated can mean "no longer in use", but it has another meaning - "tolerated, but there are better things that can or should be used". Stub is still regularly used as a basic template but it is usually quickly replaced for a subject-specific stub type by stub sorters. It' still useful to have around - especially since bots go through looking for unmarked stubs every now and again, or database dumps are done to add it to all untemplated short articles. The bots/dump can simply add {{stub}} without having to have some way of checking for subject matter (which would probably be impossible to program). also, editors who don't know all the thousands of different stub types can simply add it to any new article they create, knowing that it will be sorted by other editors. That's why Cat:stubs is sometimes completely empty, and why after a bot-run or database dump it can contain a couple of thousand articles. Grutness...wha? 01:51, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

Hmm. There was quite a dust-up in one of the other Talk Pages I was visiting a few weeks ago about the meaning of deprecate. Many Wikipedians have adopted the computer-jargon version of meaning "no longer being used although it will still work." Frankly, I think the word is confusing for most editors, even longstanding ones like me. I am going to try to make the statement on the Project Page here a bit more useful. Regarding the rubric "General." I believe it is confusing. Can we change it to "Introductory explanation," or something like that? For the umpteenth time I clicked on it, assuming I would find a list of "general" topics, but I did not. Yours, GeorgeLouis (talk) 23:26, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

Not sure that that name would be much better, since it's more to list the main, unsubcategorised stubs than to explain anything. I've changed it to "Generic stub types" , which is hopefully a little more self-explanatory. Grutness...wha? 23:39, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

I can't figure out which link on this page would lead me to the LGBT stubs; I eventually gave up and ran a search for them. Are they not listed here? If so, where? If not, where should they added? Aristophanes68 (talk) 21:37, 7 October 2009 (UTC)
