[edit] Highways

I added highways to every county.--MNAdam 20:12, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Possible way of addressing the weakness of articles

Something some other projects have done is not to try to get a collaboration within a set period of time, but rather for the members of the project to decide which articles they consider to be of top importance to the project, and then let them free to try to bring those articles up as they have the opportunity. I wonder if that sort of thing might work here. Given the comparitively small number of articles tagged with the project banner, I think maybe 25 could be the number of articles to shoot for trying to improve the first "round". It might also get a few more people to work on those articles, if the banner indicated their priority. Thoughts? Badbilltucker 01:48, 17 November 2006 (UTC)

Yes we need to get priorities.Spiesr 16:25, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Yankton College

Was Yankton College really the first liberal arts college west of the MISSISSIPPI River? Should that be the MISSOURI River? (The reason I ask is that I can think of one liberal arts college in Iowa that was established in 1846...) —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 216.12.216.185 (talk) 16:51, November 18, 2006

[edit] Oahe Dam

Wikified Oahe Dam article. Is it enough to update the stub tag? Also, not sure what to do with the section I labeled "Native American Displacement." I think it's relevant info, I just don't know how to begin. Thoughts? Sculptorjones 02:12, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Pages expanded/enhanced

I substantially expanded the content for Karl Earl Mundt and removed the "stub" tags from the article, but not the Talk page. Does someone want to review the article now? --orlady 04:02, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Origin of "Revillo"

I grew up in Milbank, just down the road from Revillo, and "everyone knew" that the origin of the town's name was "Olliver" spelled backwards. Always found this particulary unusual...I can't find a reference online, but would any of you project members at Northern have access to a hard copy reference? (I live in Nebraska.) [edit] Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 22:02, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] County articles need work

The county articles in South Dakota need work. They aren't using the standard infoboxes:

I have added "infobox needed" banners to all relevant articles, discussing the need for both of these changes. /Timneu22 20:21, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Historical Listings of South Dakota Legislators

I've been working on a historical table listing members of the South Dakota Senate from 1889 to the present. Anyone interested can take a look at it in my sandbox. The information was pulled from the South Dakota Legislative Research Council and the 2005 South Dakota Blue Book published by the Secretary of State. Note that there is a blank table for the House, as I haven't quite gotten that far yet. I think the article has merrit, as other states have complete or almost-complete lists of their respective state legislatures (see Members of the California State Legislature). I think an article such as this would improve South Dakota articles, particularly since several former state legislators already have articles due to them being later elected governor or congressman. There is also sufficient information to be found in libraries to generate at the least stub-based articles for former state legislators.

My reason for posting this is to check with the group on a preference for where to place table in the main article space. There is already a List of Members of the South Dakota State Senate which is currently a redirect to the South Dakota State Legislature article. My thought is the article could go under Members of the South Dakota State Senate, with the current "List of" redirect moved to point to that new article. I would do the same with Members of the South Dakota State House of Representatives once I find the time to start that project. If no one has any serious objections to this approach, I will make the change.Dcmacnut 03:28, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

  • One comment on how I have the Senate listing broken down. There are three separate tables to make navigation easier. I selected the yearly cutoffs based on where redistricting resulted in a clean break in senate terms so there would be no overlap.Dcmacnut 03:28, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Governor question

You have an early 1900s governor of SD whose article is currently at the title Robert S. Vesey, with one s in his surname, but the body text refers to him as Vessey with a double s, and the overwhelming majority of links to his article are also spelled double-s Vessey. As there's now also a Robert Vessey in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island, could somebody clarify how your former governor's name should be spelled, so that we can make whatever link corrections and/or disambiguations are needed? Thanks. Bearcat (talk) 22:00, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

  • I checked the history and saw that it was moved from Robert S. Vessey by User talk:Kid Baxter who doesn't have any contribs beside moving the article, so I moved it back to match everything else. Spiesr (talk) 14:33, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
Okay. I'm going to dab the Canadian one, then, since a state governor is certainly more important than, and hence gets title precedence over, an MLA. And going by the sole comment on Kid Baxter's talk page, regarding the copyright status of a photo of the Canadian Vessey's caucus mate Cynthia Dunsford, it's pretty clear to me now that the move was a misguided disambiguation attempt. Bearcat (talk) 18:11, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! [edit] Articles flagged for cleanup

Currently, 1803 articles are assigned to this project, of which 263, or 14.6%, are flagged for cleanup of some sort. (Data as of 14 July 2008.) Are you interested in finding out more? I am offering to generate cleanup to-do lists on a project or work group level. See User:B. Wolterding/Cleanup listings for details. More than 150 projects and work groups have already subscribed, and adding a subscription for yours is easy - just place a template on your project page.

If you want to respond to this canned message, please do so at my user talk page; I'm not watching this page. --B. Wolterding (talk) 17:17, 27 July 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Sioux Falls Uprising of 1923

All sources for the above South Dakota-related article are off-line, and my on-line research finds nothing to verify this event. The one url cited in the article is not working. The only links found doing a google search are to a piece done by comedian, Stephen Colbert, in 2007. This link (http://conversationstoppers.blogspot.com/2007/10/pumpkin-riots-of-1923.html) suggests the whole thing may have been a spoof/hoax. See also this link (http://www.wikiality.com/Pumpkin_Riots) to a Colbert related site, also suggesting this is a spoof. Someone with access to the cited sources needs to check this out and determine whether this article is a hoax. If so, it should be deleted -- even though it is an entertaining story. Please report any findings to the article's talk page.Cbl62 (talk) 20:25, 1 September 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for South Dakota

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! For the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial team, SelectionBot 23:27, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

[edit] South Dakota articles needing geographic coordinates

98 articles in Category:South Dakota articles missing geocoordinate data do not have geographic coordinates. Coords are useful for making the article appear on Google Maps & many other mapping services; and they allow our users to click through to see the article subject location on a map. There's a short guide to on how to add geocodes to articles ... it really is very easy to do. I hope you'll take some time to ensure that South Dakota is as well represented as it can be on wikipedia by fixing up the listed articles. thanks --Tagishsimon (talk) 00:49, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

Some of the articles missing coordinates may be NRHP-listed places. It's easy to add coordinates to any NRHP article by adding the NRHP infobox, which comes in with coordinates already. There's a handy NRHP infobox generator tool supported by User:Elkman, at http://www2.elkman.net/nrhp/infobox.php. You just enter "SD" and any part of the name of the place, and it generates a cut-and-paste ready infobox, all filled out with the available info, usually including coordinates and a map image. doncram (talk) 06:02, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Coming soon - GA nom for South Dakota

In case some of you watchlist this page and not South Dakota, just a note that I'm planning to nominate our flagship article for GA status in a week or so, and I've left a few comments at Talk:South Dakota about a couple of final proposals before the nomination. AlexiusHoratius 14:21, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

Now nominated; I don't know that there will be too much work to do when it's reviewed, but we'll see... AlexiusHoratius 09:28, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Coordinators' working group

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. — Delievered by §hepBot (Disable) on behalf of the WikiProject coordinators' working group at 06:36, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Article alerts

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Message sent by User:Addbot to all active wiki projects per request, Comments on the message and bot are welcome here.

Thanks. — Headbomb {ταλκκοντριβς – WP Physics} 09:42, 15 March, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Article assessment criteria

I've been working on assessing the importance of some articles, and I don't know that our current importance criteria is too helpful (Top importance = Articles that are of utmost importance, etc.) I was thinking that it might be an easier task if there were clearer criteria to use. I had always kind of liked what Wikiproject North Dakota used, so I stole it and made it a bit more SD-specific, along with making a few changes based on my own POV and adding a few things. It can currently be seen at my sandbox. (This isn't meant to be that rigid of a guideline or anything, just something to help when doing article assessments. Also, the criteria I've put down so far isn't set in stone, changes are of course possible if someone has a major problem with a particular entry.) I was wondering what other members thought as far as the new criteria and whether or not we should adopt some form of it. AlexiusHoratius 10:35, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

Seems okay for the most part. Spiesr (talk) 17:20, 30 March 2009 (UTC)
OK, I went ahead and added the criteria to the assessment page. I also added a few things today that I had come across when tagging articles, like what to do with politicians and so on. (I figured mid for former governors, senators and congressmen, as well as current major state officials like the cabinet, and low for everyone else, like state legislators.) AlexiusHoratius 14:26, 14 April 2009 (UTC)
I noticed that National Register of Historic Places listings in South Dakota was tagged as "low" importance. I think it should be high or mid. It covers approximately 1500 places throughout South Dakota, which comprise most of the most important, preserved houses, archeological sites, public buildings and so on. I could understand rating one of the NRHP-listed places, on its own, as low importance, but not the list of all of them! doncram (talk) 02:50, 24 May 2009 (UTC)
Okay, I'll reassess it as "Mid". I actually had trouble making a decision on that one, as well as most of the other 'list' articles as well. On one hand, they often don't provide much information and few people are going to see them, but on the other, like you said, it could be argued that if many of the, say, river articles are assessed as 'high' or 'mid', then the list of all rivers should at least be 'high'. The day I did the articles beginning with "L", I thought to myself that I may have been going a bit too high with the importance ratings, so I guess I kind of over-compensated when I hit the articles starting with "N". AlexiusHoratius 03:54, 24 May 2009 (UTC)
...But I'm gonna put the recently-created "NRHP sites in X County" lists as "Low". AlexiusHoratius 04:07, 1 June 2009 (UTC)
Coughlin Campanile, among the NRHP listings in Brookings County (one of pics just added to list-article by AlexiusHoratius, thanks!)
I noticed u doing that at, for example, National Register of Historic Places listings in Lawrence County, South Dakota. I would hope that the wikiproject would choose to adopt these lists and develop them by seeking photos to add, and adding descriptions, and perhaps creating the individual NRHP articles too. This could be a great way to involve wikipedians from all over the state, as there are NRHP sites everywhere, and each one is individually wikipedia-notable. You say "they often don't provide much information" but I don't agree: they have addresses and coordinates already and fully establish what are the NRHP sites in every county. Also you say "few people are going to see them", well, that is perhaps a self-fulfilling prophecy. I am not meaning to argue, and I am not likely to become a member of this wikiproject or visit this state any time soon, but I think they should get at least Mid rating. And be adopted and developed!  :) doncram (talk) 05:59, 1 June 2009 (UTC)
Hmm, I'm still thinking "Low" for the county lists, sort of a state-wide importance sort of thing, but I'm willing to change it if other members want to. I hope I didn't sound like I was disparaging your work in this area, we all have our interests or niches, and I think that they are all important in helping build the encyclopedia, I just think that in this case, especially with county-specific things like this, state-wide importance is the most important factor. Anyway, I do think that the lists are useful to people interested in this area, and, like you said, taking photos of these places could be a cool task if someone wants to take it on. AlexiusHoratius 06:55, 1 June 2009 (UTC)
Okay, no problem. Thanks for adding some starter pics to National Register of Historic Places listings in Brookings County, South Dakota! doncram (talk) 07:18, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

[edit] GA Sweeps invitation

This message is being sent to WikiProjects with GAs under their scope. Since August 2007, WikiProject Good Articles has been participating in GA sweeps. The process helps to ensure that articles that have passed a nomination before that date meet the GA criteria. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. Instead of reviewing by topic, editors can consider picking and choosing whichever articles they are interested in.

We are always looking for new members to assist with reviewing the remaining articles, and since this project has GAs under its scope, it would be beneficial if any of its members could review a few articles (perhaps your project's articles). Your project's members are likely to be more knowledgeable about your topic GAs then an outside reviewer. As a result, reviewing your project's articles would improve the quality of the review in ensuring that the article meets your project's concerns on sourcing, content, and guidelines. However, members can also review any other article in the worklist to ensure it meets the GA criteria.

If any members are interested, please visit the GA sweeps page for further details and instructions in initiating a review. If you'd like to join the process, please add your name to the running total page. In addition, for every member that reviews 100 articles from the worklist or has a significant impact on the process, s/he will get an award when they reach that threshold. With ~1,300 articles left to review, we would appreciate any editors that could contribute in helping to uphold the quality of GAs. If you have any questions about the process, reviewing, or need help with a particular article, please contact me or OhanaUnited and we'll be happy to help. --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 06:54, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Assessment update

The no-importance category is now empty, meaning the bulk of the assessment work is pretty much done. Towards the end, I removed the project banner from around a dozen or so articles, most of them were about ships named for things in the state (although I kept USS South Dakota as I suppose it could still fall under the project's scope) as well as a few people and events in which the article made no mention of the state. I'll probably go back and re-assess a few things - I'm thinking about bringing some of the longer state highways and governors of Dakota Territory up to "Mid". On the whole, though, most of the work is pretty much complete. AlexiusHoratius 19:23, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Courthouse Photos

I propose that photos of all South Dakota county courthouses be added to their respective article, and possibly the corresponding county seat article. This would serve to beautify the article and serve as a visual representation of the county. Help is needed adding them to their respective county pages by adding the following to the County Infobox template

|ex image = courthouse image filename.jpg

|ex image cap = xxx County Courthouse in xxxx, South Dakota

The following counties do not have courthouse photos. Contributors may want to cross them off once a photo is taken and uploaded. -- Ichabod (talk) 01:52, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern Railroad GA Sweeps: On Hold

I have reviewed Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern Railroad for GA Sweeps to determine if it still qualifies as a Good Article. In reviewing the article I have found several issues, which I have detailed here. Since the article falls under the scope of this project, I figured you would be interested in contributing to further improve the article. Please comment there to help the article maintain its GA status. If you have any questions, let me know on my talk page and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 03:30, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

[edit] The Journey Museum and Gardens

I have been working on the page for the Journey Museum and Gardens off and on for quite awhile but have come to a point where it needs either a serious overhaul or a massive edit to make it more NPOV and WP Museum Standards compliant to get it to the next step. At this point, I have no idea where to go with it. If someone would be willing to help me out a bit to either edit/fix it or point out what specifically should be done to do so, it would be very helpful. If I could just get someone to put a week's effort into it, I may be able to take it from there (unless of course someone would like to help beyond that :) Fact-of-the-matter (talk) 18:01, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

[edit] GA reassessment of Ghost Dance

I have conducted a reassessment of the above article as part of the GA Sweeps process. I have found some concerns with the article which you can see at Talk:Ghost Dance/GA1. I have placed the article on hold whilst these are fixed. You are being notified as the talk page has a banner for this project. Thanks, GaryColemanFan (talk) 23:56, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
