[edit] December 24
[edit] 2 articles on the same thing
Hi, I was just wondering what I ought to do (Delete, Speedy delete, re-direct, merge, etc.). There's two articles about the Leinster Junior Schools Cup. What should be done with the inferior Leinster Junior Cup article about the same thing? Backbeatlistener (talk) 01:20, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
- You could take it through the formal process of requesting a merger, or because this is not likely to be a high-traffic article, you could "be bold" and combine the facts into a single article under whichever is the better "common name", and redirect from the other one. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 01:24, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
- (edit conflict)If there is any information in Leinster Junior Cup that is not in Leinster Schools Junior Cup, then merge the content and then redirect. If there's nothing worth merging, then just redirect. --Mysdaao talk 01:26, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Having trouble with a custom signature...
I have been trying to make my signature using this code:<font color=#FF6C00>Ham</font><font color=#3415B0>tech</font><font color=#A8F000>person</font>. It should come out like this: Hamtechperson. However, when I put it in my signature box and click the check box to make this be my signature, I get an error message telling me to check the HTML tags. What is the problem? Using a basic HTML page with the text leaving the wiki-links out, but the HTML code is not modified, works fine. Hamtechperson (talk) 02:22, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
- Use quotation marks around the color code:
<font color="#FF6C00">Ham</font><font color="#3415B0">tech</font><font color="#A8F000">person</font>. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:54, 24 December 2009 (UTC) - Just a note, the light green is very hard to read on a white background. You may want to consider a darker color. [edit] JS on talk page
Is there any way to import a js file (say something like user:btilm/replace.js) to a page so that the script will run on the page whenever someone visits it? BtilmHappy Holidays! 04:06, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
- I'm not aware of anything like this (of course, that doesn't mean its not possible) - as a rule, js files are for inclusion in people's monobook(etc).js files. They import it by adding the line
importScript('User:Btilm/replace.js');. In your case, a "replace" tab will be added to the screen if the script is in the user's skin js file. -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 14:01, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Cannot Setup the WIkiFIlter to Work with either Apache or IIS in sevrer 2008
i followed the instrucstion below exactly and nothing seems to happen i even tried IIS but no luck.
| How to set up WikiFilter |
- Start downloading a Wikipedia database dump file such as an English Wikipedia dump. It is best to use a download manager such as GetRight so you can resume downloading the file even if your computer crashes or is shut down during the download.
- Download XAMPPLITE from [2] (you must get the 1.5.0 version for it to work). Make sure to pick the file whose filename ends with .exe
- Install/extract it to C:\XAMPPLITE.
- Download WikiFilter 2.3 from this site: https://sourceforge.net/projects/wikifilter. You will have a choice of files to download, so make sure that you pick the 2.3 version. Extract it to C:\WIKIFILTER.
- Copy the WikiFilter.so into your C:\XAMPPLITE\apache\modules folder.
- Edit your C:\xampplite\apache\conf\httpd.conf file, and add the following line:
- LoadModule WikiFilter_module "C:/XAMPPLITE/apache/modules/WikiFilter.so"
- When your Wikipedia file has finished downloading, uncompress it into your C:\WIKIFILTER folder. (I used WinRAR http://www.rarlab.com/ demo version - BitZipper http://www.bitzipper.com/winrar.html works well too.)
- Run WikiFilter (WikiIndex.exe), and go to your C:\WIKIFILTER folder, and drag and drop the XML file into the window, click Load, then Start.
- After it finishes, exit the window, and go to your C:\XAMPPLITE folder. Run the setup_xampp.bat file to configure xampp.
- When you finish with that, run the Xampp-Control.exe file, and start apache.
- Browse to http://localhost/wiki and see if it works
- If it doesn't work, see the forums.

[edit] Medieval Warming Period
Why are contributors unable to provide the historical graph for this period in time? Rather than the graph that has been proven to inaccurately portray this period? —Preceding unsigned comment added by GrandePrairie (talk • contribs) 07:04, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
- The proper place to discuss this is on the talk page of the relevant article (presumably Global warming or Global warming controversy): this is the Help Desk, for questions about using Wikipedia.
- It sounds as if you are arguing against widely-held views: that is perfectly acceptable, but be aware that exceptional claims require exceptional sources. You need to explain on the talk page exactly what you think is wrong, not just make sweeping statement about people being "unable to provide the ... graph"; and present extremely solid, reliable references for your claim that the given graph has been "proven to inaccurately portray". --ColinFine (talk) 08:18, 24 December 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Download article titles
Resolved. – ukexpat (talk) 15:13, 24 December 2009 (UTC) Hi, is there any way to download a plain text file of all English Wikipedia article titles (titles only), including all the redirect pages if possible? 81.152.168.149 (talk) 14:29, 24 December 2009 (UTC).
- Wikipedia:DUMP mentions all_titles_in_ns0.gz - I'm assuming that includes redirects, but I can't guarantee it! (the 'latest' version at wikimedia.org is 37.7Mb compressed, 133Mb uncompressed - it is complete to 2009-Nov-29 00:57:31 -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 14:33, 24 December 2009 (UTC)

[edit] How to publish my Page?
I am the editor of ARThood and want to publish my Page. I "saved" the Page (which I understood would make the information public to everyone), but the information is still not visible. Please help! —Preceding unsigned comment added by ARThood (talk • contribs) 15:42, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
- You have put the information on a user page, which is not an article. Since you don't have the ability to move pages until your account is autoconfirmed, you can create an article with the content with the article wizard. However, the content on User:ARThood/ARThood is probably not acceptable on Wikipedia because it looks to be about a non-notable website. You will have to add reliable sources to show notability. Please read Wikipedia:Notability (web) for more information on this. Also, your username indicates you are associated with the website. In that case, you are strongly discouraged from creating the article at all because it is a conflict of interest. --Mysdaao talk 15:55, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
-
- Also, for the same reason, your username probably contravenes Wikipedia:User name policy. --ColinFine (talk) 16:55, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Uploading new images?
Resolved. – ukexpat (talk) 17:50, 24 December 2009 (UTC) I uploaded a new, cropped image to Mike Kafka, and the old one keeps showing up instead. I don't know if it's Wikipedia or my computer. Eagles 24/7 (C) 17:20, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
- Sometimes it takes a while for images to update on all pages on which they are displayed. Try purging the page cache, purging the image cache, and waiting an hour. I think the image has updated now, anyway. Intelligentsium 17:26, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
- Still hasn't been updated (at least not for me) and I'm not sure how to purge everything. Eagles 24/7 (C) 17:30, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
- First, try bypassing your cache. If this does not work, Wikipedia:Purge explains purging. -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 17:32, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks, it worked now after I bypassed my cache. Eagles 24/7 (C) 17:35, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
[edit] How to remove redirect while keeping sandbox?
I just moved an article into the mainspace, but the move left a redirect at User:Giants2008/Sandbox. I could just mark the entire page for deletion, but I would prefer to leave the sandbox intact as a functional page for future article building. How do I get rid of this redirect while leaving the sandbox functional? Is this something that I can do, or will admin help be required? Giants2008 (27 and counting) 17:53, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
- You can remove the redirect syntax, and the sandbox will still be there, though you will probably have to subst: it into the mainspace if you don't want a confusing initial edit. Intelligentsium 18:02, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
- In that case, what would be the formatting for subst? Giants2008 (27 and counting) 18:05, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
- Never mind. I just removed the syntax and added a user sandbox template, and everything appears to be in order. Didn't know that I could remove that myself. Giants2008 (27 and counting) 18:09, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
- You can also type db-userreq if you want any page in your userspace deleted. An admin will come along shortly and delete it. --Jayron32 18:11, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
- (edit conflict)If you want a new article to be moved into the mainspace from your userspace (without a first edit saying "moved x to y"), you can put
on a page, and the contents of the Sandbox will be copypasted to that page. As you should be the only contributor to the Sandbox draft, attribution will not be a problem, I think. Intelligentsium 18:12, 24 December 2009 (UTC) - Attribution was what I was worried about at first. Will keep that in mind for the next time I build up a page. Giants2008 (27 and counting) 18:19, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Virginia College
kind of an fyi there was a college in virginia years ago also called virginia college. my mom graduated from there about 1924 or 25 it apparently disbanded at some point thought it might be interesting for readers to know i don't have too many more facts for you - sorry —Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.182.44.135 (talk) 18:18, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
- Thank you for this! The Virginia College mentions nothing of this (which is why you mentioned it here!) but unfortunately we need some verification of the facts - as I'm sure you can appreciate, we can't just have "My mom told me" as a source of information! Without more information, I'm afraid that we can't really create a new article. Perhaps you could ask your mom to look at this list of Virginia Colleges that have Closed, Merged, Changed Names and see if any of them ring a bell: I suspect that the name was not exactly "Virginia College". Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is a help desk for asking questions related to using the encyclopedia. Thus, we have no inside track on the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the left hand side of your screen. On inserting Indian states in search bar one gets an alphab list of all states commencing with Andaman & Nicobar and ending with West Bengal. On the RIGHT of each page there is a logo and relevant details of each state; when was this compiled? I'd like to know how to use these details and the best way to.
It'd be easier just to have a www link directly to each page, so how to please. If some of these states details are found to be slightly incorrect or o-o-date does anyone mind them being changed. Please do not include contact details in your questions. We are unable to provide answers by any off-wiki medium and this page is highly visible across the internet. The details have been removed, but if you wish for them to be permanently removed from the page history, email this address. - Please do not advertise your site on Wikipedia. The Help Desk is for questions about using Wikipedia, so I will try to answer those questions, but if you wish to advertise your site, there are other forums on the Internet where you can do that.
- If you have a question on a specific article, it is helpful to write the title of the article here. The title of each page is at the very top in large font. From what you wrote, my guess is that you're either talking about States and territories of India or Template:India states. On Wikipedia pages, you can usually click on an image to find its information. On these pages, the only image there is File:India-states-numbered.svg which gives you information on the image and when it was uploaded. Every page, including articles, has a page history which can be accessed by pressing "history" on the top of the page. The page history lists every change was made, when each was made, and who made each change.
- To get a permanent link to a page, on the left side under "toolbox", click "Cite this page". That will give you permanent link to use if you want to if you want to link to that version of the page. If you are going to reuse Wikipedia content on your site, you must give credit to Wikipedia for it.
- If you see something that is incorrect on Wikipedia, anyone may change it, including you. Wikipedia is a wiki, so anyone can edit almost any article by pressing "edit this page" at the top. You can be bold and edit it yourself, and if you make a mistake, someone else will fix it soon. If you find a mistake but don't wish to change it yourself, you can request the change here, but please be very specific and tell us what exactly you want changed and on what page. Also, Wikipedia content must be verifiable, so please provide a reliable source for any change you want to make. --Mysdaao talk 14:02, 25 December 2009 (UTC)

- They stand for football and football-right. The templates display an image of a nation's flag and an internal link to that nation's national football team. fb puts the flag to the left of the team link, and fb-rt puts the flag to the right of the team link. --Mysdaao talk 18:34, 25 December 2009 (UTC)
I put an image in the infobox for the article on singer Julian Casablancas. ([1]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julian_Casablancas)
However, after I've edited the page with the new image, there is an extra code that is visible above and beneath the image. What's wrong?
Nash212 (talk) 18:50, 25 December 2009 (UTC)nash212
- You added the full image syntax to the infobox. You only need that if you're displaying an image on its own in an article. In an infobox, you only need the image name. You can see the documentation, including how to use images, at Template:Infobox musical artist. I have changed the infobox fields on Julian Casablancas so it won't display the extra code. --Mysdaao talk 19:02, 25 December 2009 (UTC)

[edit] I need help with searching and disambiguation
There are now three films about Che Guevara. There is "Che Guevara", "Che!", and a new film made in two parts called "Che". I would like to make it easier for people to find and distinguish them. For beginners, people should be able to search for "Che film" and have all three appear in the drop down menu. All all three should also appear if someone searches for "Che Guevara". A disambiguation page may also be indicated. I am not sure of all the steps involved to accomplish these things. There are also several other pages about Guevara.
Che! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Che!_(film)
Che Guevara http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Che_Guevara_(film)
Che http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Che_(film)
bruvensky (talk) 20:47, 25 December 2009 (UTC)
- Currently there is a disambiguation page Che (disambiguation). The top of Che Guevara has a link to the disambiguation page, so if somebody searches for "Che Guevara", they will first go to the article and can see the link to the disambiguation page immediately. There is also now a redirect from Che film to Che (film). If you want to change the redirect to something else (such as the disambiguation page), go to Che film, and at the top you'll see "(Redirected from Che film)". Click on the "Che film" link and that will take you to the redirect page. Edit that page and you can change where it redirects to. --Mysdaao talk 20:54, 25 December 2009 (UTC)
- There is a Che Guevara navigation template you could add to all the articles about him (which do not already display the template). See Wikipedia:Categories, lists, and navigation templates for an overview of navigation methods on Wikipedia. You probably cannot satisfy everyone who tries to use the search box, since you cannot predict all the different keywords people will try to search for something. Your use of the phrase "drop down movie" suggests you may be asking for search box behavior that we do not have. --Teratornis (talk) 21:03, 25 December 2009 (UTC)
I meant to say "drop down menu". bruvensky (talk) 21:12, 25 December 2009 (UTC)
- The only kind of "drop down menu" is what pages are suggested in search bar when you type words in. That is a technical feature of Wikipedia, and users have no direct control over what appears or what order the pages are in. --Mysdaao talk 21:40, 25 December 2009 (UTC)
There may be a way to indirectly control what appears in the drop down menu by making redirect pages or something else. bruvensky (talk) 23:09, 25 December 2009 (UTC)
- Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2008-11-10/Search engine gives some hints. But note, we have zero information about how many people are searching in any particular way. You can only know how you would like to search for something, but once you know where an article is, you no longer need to search for it. Thus it is difficult to know whether a change that would have helped you search for something will help others, or how many others it will help. Also see Category:Che Guevara which should list all the articles directly relating to the subject. --Teratornis (talk) 19:31, 26 December 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Disambiguation of a minor previous entry to a new major entry of the same name
Hello,
For the past few weeks I have been compiling facts to create a new Wikipedia entry for the artist group named Celer, who was active from 2005-2009. I have all the necessary information, biographies, discography, sources, relevant links, etc.
In searching Wikipedia I found no pages created for the artist group Celer, but instead I found this one, created because of a mention in a book by Ovid: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celer
My question is this.. Since Celer (the artist group) would be searched heavily, far more than the literary reference, should I change the literary reference to a minor article, but creating a descriptive addition to the link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celer (literary reference) or something like that..
or should I instead create something like this, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celer (artists) for the artist group, and leave the other alone?
Doing a simple google search for Celer obviously shows there is more popularity directed towards the artists.
Thank you for your time, I really appreciate it, and thank you for helping me create a good information source for these important, and meaningful artists. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Missing Symmetry (talk • contribs) 02:36, 26 December 2009 (UTC)

He says he talked to you and stopped editing based on your feedback on the source he was using. It might be best to discuss your concerns more with him. I have written an article in user space and now want to move it to article space. How do I do it? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Wiroshermes (talk • contribs) 16:55, 26 December 2009 (UTC)
- You can only move pages when your account is autoconfirmed, which happens when your account is at least four days old and has made at least ten edits. You can request someone here move your page for you, but I think your draft has issues with its sources and notability that should be addressed first. I suggest you read Wikipedia:So you made a userspace draft before a requesting it be moved. --Mysdaao talk 17:44, 26 December 2009 (UTC)

yes, that's what i'm referring to; but i can't find anything in either of the links you give that adresses my question Wran (talk) 07:46, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
- The directions to create a category are at Help:Category#Category pages. Basically, categories are created just like any other page. Just add the category to a page using the category name you want. That will create a redlink to the category on the bottom of the page. Click on the redlink, add any information want to the category page, and then save it. Then add the category to other pages you want in the category, and that will automatically populate the list on the category page. --Mysdaao talk 16:08, 27 December 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Bob Marley
HI there - I am a member of the Marley Family and when looking at the Bob Marley page we found 2 mistakes under his personal information. Our web person tried to fix these mistakes a while back but was not allowed. Please let us know how to go about correcting them.
- 1 Bob Marley did NOT father a child named Imani Carole, born May 22, 1963 to Cheryl Murray (this person needs to be removed)
- 2 Makeda Marley needs to be removed as his child. Please note that she was born after Bob Marley's death and although she was initially acknowledged as child and received compensation from the estate at the time of his death she is not recognized as his child by the family. Please check the official Bob Marley website that is being maintained by the family members and under family you can see all the children. Please let me know if you can correct these 2 points for us. Thank you.Aniohevetotcha (talk) 07:40, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
- Because you are associated with the subject of the article, it is strongly suggested that you not edit the article because that is a conflict of interest. You should request the edits be made on the discussion page for the article at Talk:Bob Marley. Because Wikipedia policy is that content must be verifiable by reliable secondary sources, you should provide a source that says these two people were not Bob Marley's children, other than the official site. Because the official site is run by the family, it is not sufficient to verify what you say. --Mysdaao talk 16:23, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
-
- I have edited to remove these two from the main list, as they are not listed at the official site. However, since there are sources on the web that say that they are Marely's children, I did not think it proper to remove them completely, but described the uncertainty.
- In the case of Makeda, I note that Meredith Dixon lists her as Marley's daughter, unsurprisingly given you say she was at first acknowledged. But I cannot add the information you give about her status subsequently changing without a reliable published source.
- The case of Imani Carole is different: there are many places on the web that mention her, but I did not find any reliable ones. It would be within Wikipedia's guidelines just to remove her; but since there are so many places that mention her I thought that this would be unwise, as somebody else will just add her in again (still without a reference). So I have explicitly said that there are places on the web that list her, but the official site does not.
- I realise that this does not go as far as you have requested, but as always Wikipedia's criterion is verifiability not truth. If there is a published source explaining that Makeda's status changed, or that Imani Carole is definitely not a child of Bob Marley, then this information can go into the article. But as it stands, I'm afraid we cannot accept the information you have given. --ColinFine (talk) 16:38, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Sound clips
I've moved this from Jimbo's talkpage. Skomorokh 11:07, 27 December 2009 (UTC) Completely lost
OK, this is probably completely the wrong place to be but in 45 minutes of searching it is the first place I can actually post a comment. The last thing I want is to conceal my internet address.
I looked up the (British) NHS (National Health Service) for a book chapter I am writing. I found a number of significant sound clips but clicking on any one of them brought up the message "this is not available in your area". We are talking about items that are 60 years old and so out of copyright. So what gives? Can anyone give me an answer?
OK, I have really low expectations of getting a reply.

Please do not include contact details in your questions. We are unable to provide answers by any off-wiki medium and this page is highly visible across the internet. The details have been removed, but if you wish for them to be permanently removed from the page history, email this address. - Are you talking about sound clips on Wikipedia? If so, could you give links to specific ones, then we can help more! If you are talking about sound clips on the web in general, many streams (both video and audio) are only allowed in the country in which they are hosted. For example, UK visitors to US websites can't see TV episodes. As for its copyright status, generally works are copyrighted for 50 years (see IPO's notes) - but the problem isn't the copyright, but the fact that you are trying to access a stream on a UK site from a non-UK site. You might want to contact the website owners and ask them about it.
- Alternatively: Have you tried Wikipedia's Reference Desk? They specialize in knowledge questions and will try to answer just about any question in the universe (except how to use Wikipedia, since that is what this Help Desk is for). Just follow the link, select the relevant section, and ask away. I hope this helps.
- As you left this question elsewhere, I am leaving a message on your talk page referring to this reply. -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 13:06, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
[edit] adding a full article from an official source to the minimal bio already existing in Wikipedia
This is the first time to add information vs. edit existing info. We do not have time to incorporate more information into the existing biography of Doris Twitchell Allen, but have found an excellent full length aricle on the CISV Youngstown Ohio website that offers a lot more information about DTA. - Unfortunately, probably not. First of all, Wikipedia cannot accept copy/pasted material where the copyright status is unclear. If you own the copyright to the material in question, then this page can help you. Secondly, the article is written from a very positive slant and Wikipedia articles should be written from a neutral point of view. The best way to use the document provided is to verify some of the facts listed in the article and cite your source. TNXMan 15:25, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
[edit] ridding an article of inappropriate templates
I was still in the process of creating the page Ed Naha when objections regarding originality, notability, references, and neutrality were raised, even though a glance at the page history would have revealed that the article was in a state of rapid development. This shows an absence of good faith on the part of the editors imposing these templates.
I have posted to the talk pages of the objecting editors, but haven't gotten their attention. How can I best get a set of objective eyes to evaluate the article and these templates? Bustter (talk) 18:19, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
- A good place to go to get comments is Wikipedia:Requests for feedback.
- They're not assuming bad faith by adding those templates, even if you're in the middle of making changes. It's an important part of an article's creation to let editors and readers know about potential problems, so they can be resolved and the article can be improved. I see you posted messages to those users less than 2 hours ago. You can't always expect an immediate response, and there's no rush because on Wikipedia, there is no deadline. --Mysdaao talk 18:42, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
Of course there is no deadline, yet the "rush to judgement" on the article's validity came within 5 minutes of its creation. If it's clear that I am working on a newly created article, shouldn't a "presumption of good faith" bring the presumption that I am addressing the very issues being raised? The two editors who saddled the article with their templates, had they noted that I was working on the piece, should certainly revisit it after my activity was done. Further, the challenge against Naha's "notability" is clearly spurious, as searching for his name in Wikipedia itself demonstrates. Bustter (talk) 19:14, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
- This is why it is often a good idea to work on an article in your userspace, and move it to article space when it's ready. --ColinFine (talk) 20:29, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, Bustter, this is bad faith, when your editing is interrupted by a rush to tag. If it had been an attempt to assist you or improve the article, the tagger would not have interrupted your writing to tag. The article does have a lot of issues, particularly with the close paraphrasing, that need addressed. I will see what I can do to help with the article. There is no hurry to tag an article. The tagger can wait a day until you're done writing, the tagger can edit the article, the tagger can point you to resources. There are alternatives. --IP69.226.103.13 (talk) 20:35, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
- If a user were judging the article's "validity", someone would have nominated it for deletion. That hasn't happened. Maintenance templates are not meant to attack the article. No article is perfect, and even very good, longstanding articles sometimes have templates on them pointing out ways to improve it. Please don't take it personally or be possessive of the article you created. All Wikipedia content is edited collaboratively (editing includes adding maintenance templates). Please read Wikipedia:Ownership of articles for this policy. If you want to request that other users not edit while you are in the middle of a series of changes, you can put inuse or increation templates, or another template from Category:Under-construction templates to let others know it is being actively worked on, as long as you remove it when you have completed your work. --Mysdaao talk 22:25, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
You know, it looks like the editor who tagged the article is trying hard to work withyou Bustter. Maybe go with it, instead of forum shopping. --IP69.226.103.13 (talk) 20:57, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Graphemes
There has been some discussion on Talk:Latin spelling and pronunciation about the use of chevrons/angle brackets to represent graphemes - for instance "macrons are frequently used to mark long vowels (‹ā›, ‹ē›, ‹ī›, ‹ō›, ‹ū›)" - my view is that the chevrons are ugly, unnecessary and distracting and this would be much better written as just "macrons are frequently used to mark long vowels (ā, ē, ī, ō, ū)" - the letters are here being used to represent themselves and the situation is therefore quite different to the use of slashes and square brackets to indicate that the letters they surround have a special phonemic or phonetic value. Ohters clearly take a different view. I'm not sure if this is the correct place to raise this issue, but if not perhaps someone could advise me where it should be raised. --rossb (talk) 19:27, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
- The place to discuss it is exactly where it has been discussed (where there has been a fair bit of discussion). If you really can't agree than see dispute resolution. But what you have done here looks a bit like "They won't listen to me there so I'll come and find somebody else to complain to". Apologies if that is not what you intend. --ColinFine (talk) 21:49, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
-
- I think the point I wanted to make is that only a few people have participated in the debate on the article in question, but it's surely a more general issue which ought to have a wider airing. I note for instance that the grapheme article has no mention of this convention --rossb (talk) 22:26, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
