At a minimum, each organization should have relevant categories for:
- Year established. format [[Category:Organizations established in YYYY]] example Category:Organizations established in 1990. (Tree is in Category:Organizations by year of establishment.)
- Location - A location or geography category. Format is usually [[Category:Organizations based in Country]]; example, Category:Organizations based in the United States. Spelling of "organization" may vary depending on country and who began the category. If in doubt, browse the tree at Category:Organizations by location. If an appropriate, more geographically-specific category exists, use that one.
- Subject - A subject category (e.g., Category:Scientific organizations). Browse the tree at Category:Organizations by subject.
- Note: There are some combined subject/country categories, e.g., Category:Environmental organisations based in the United Kingdom). Browse Category:Organizations by subject and country .
- If applicable or known, an activity category (e.g., Category:Research organizations). Browse the tree at Category:Organizations by activity. (If an organization has many different activities it may not be appropriate to categorize by activity.)
- If applicable or known, a "legal status or organizational structure" category (e.g., Category:Non-profit organizations). Browse the category at Category:Organizations by legal status.
