Wikipedia:WikiProject Music genres/Guidelines:

These guidelines exist to promote a constant style for music genre articles in Wikipedia and to help improve articles to WP:GOOD, WP:1.0 and WP:FA standards.

Contents

[edit] Sections

[edit] Lead

An articles lead section should be of the appropriate length in relation to the total length of the article and briefly explain the genres origins, general sound and culture.

[edit] Genrebox

Articles should include a genrebox template filled out with the relevant information. See here for a list of what colours are used for what.

"Subgenres" are styles of a music genre that have become notable enough to have been called a new name in their specific scenes, i.e., heavy metal music > thrash metal, black metal, death metal, etc.

"Derivative forms" are styles of music that are related to the subject genre but are considered separate or developed enough musicologically to be considered parent/root genres in their own right, i.e., rock music > heavy metal music, punk rock, etc.

"Fusion genres" are subgenres that fuse the parent genre with other distinct genres/subgenres, i.e., industrial metal would be mentioned as a fusion genre on industrial music and heavy metal music.

[edit] Characteristics

A musicological description of common musical characteristics and instrumentation should be provided. For examples, see Heavy metal music#Characteristics, Punk rock#Characteristics, Funk#Characteristics, Bouncy techno#Characteristics. For more ideas on what to write about, see Wikipedia:WikiProject Music terminology.

[edit] History

A history section, spanning both the origins and developments of the genre name usage (note that some genre names have multiple uses, such as heavy metal music or darkwave, something that needs to be noted) with verifiable with sources cited wherever possible. Avoid using weasel words or peacock terms (you know you can do better ;).

[edit] Artists

A list of artists/bands/acts that are generally representative of the genre should be included for reference. Be careful about including artists, who have only done a small number of tracks related to the subject genre when compared to the rest of their body of work as this will confuse the reader, although if you feel something needs to be included then put a quick note in brackets about which albums are of the subject genre. Also, see here for help on discerning an artist's notability or range of works. The use of {{col-begin-small}} and it's related templates is encouraged to keep lists neat. If things get out of hand, then a brief list should be provided along with link to either a list of artists page or a genre category.

[edit] Samples

Brief samples of notable tracks that represent the genre are recommended for obvious reasons. For info on fair use see here. Samples need to be in Ogg Vorbis format and ideally be around 30 seconds in length. For tips on creating samples, see the previous link. Recommended formatting;

or alternatively, use {{listen}}.

[edit] References

Note any references used in the article here. See WP:CITE for info on how to use reference code.

[edit] See also

The see also section should link to related terms. It would be preferable not to link to related genres here as these will already have been mentioned above in the genrebox and characteristics/history sections.

[edit] External links

Links to external articles relating to the genre are preferable here, although some articles also include links to record labels, related zines, etc. See here for more thoughts on external links. The use of {{col-begin-small}} and it's related templates might be required here.

[edit] Footer

The appropriate footer template should be included at the bottom of the article but before any stub, categories or transwiki code.

[edit] Other stuff

[edit] Images

Appropriate images should be included, i.e., relevant album covers/artist/band/act/equipment pictures should be peppered throughout the article. Be careful to watch the size and placement of images so as to not mess up the general layout of the article.

[edit] Examples

The following is a list of articles that are fairly well developed;
