Operation Majestic Titan is the code name for a long term project with two primary objectives, the first of which is to create the single largest featured topic on wikipedia, centered around the battleships considered, planned, built, operated, canceled, or otherwise recorded. There are probably a few hundred articles of this nature which will be included, from the earliest pre-dreadnoughts to the last of the dreadnoughts. Once all articles are featured this project will reorient to ensuring that the articles remain at FA-class.

Aside from the battleships themselves, the scope of this project also includes all battlecruisers, applicable weapons, ships classes, and other miscellaneous subjects which are to be included to ensure complete coverage of the subject. In the case of the latter, such subjects include topics that are related to the battleships but necessarily tied to any particular battleship or battleship class. In total it is expected that several hundred articles of featured quality will be required before the final FT nomination is made.

While there are multiple projects that have a stake in seeing this project succeed, it has been decided to run the project as a "special project" of the Military history WikiProject to utilize that project's vast resources in project coordination and infrastructure.

A userbox for this operation can be found here if you wish to display it. Additionally, if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, please leave a message on the talk page!

[edit] Origins of the name

"In Greek mythology, the Titans were greater even than the gods. They ruled their universe with absolute power! Well that football field out there tonight, that's our universe. Let's rule it like Titans!"
—Coach Boone, Remember the Titans

In Greek mythology, the elder gods were the Titans. Twelve of these beings ruled over the golden age before they were overthrown by the Olympian gods at the end of a ten-year war. After the titans were defeated they met a variety of ends; most were cast out and imprisoned. A lucky few had the fortune to survive this fate, and would serve in limited capacities for the Olympian gods during their rein as the supreme beings. For all this though, the titans - although defeated - remained a force of contention, having left their mark on ancient Greek society and earning for themselves a place in the modern study of ancient history.

In much the same way these battleships also shared a similar story. Battleships were the undeniable gods of seaborne warfare in the late 19th and early to mid 20th century until their reign was savagely cut short by the rise of the aircraft carrier during the Second World War. Having established themselves as the new gods of seaborne warfare, these carriers banished the battleships first into reserve, then to the scrapyards, but a precious few managed to escape. Four were overhauled and served in the 1980s and 90s; only nine still exist today, as floating museums[Note 1]. Although they no longer exist as a powerful force, battleships have certainly left their mark on the world, and today still inspire awe among the public.

[edit] Order of Operations for Majestic Titan

Due to the extreme size of this operation we will run this in multiple phases. Each phase is listed below, along with the roughly defined scope the phase covers. We are currently working on phase one.

Phase 1
The Ships Themselves: All battleship and battlecruisers are included in this phase, along with their respective class articles. This includes, whenever possible, battleship and battlecruiser classes that did not make it past the planning phase but have sufficient information to warrant an article. This also extends to individual hulls that were laid down but not completed, if the hulls in question have enough information to warrant individual articles. Those ship articles with insufficient information for a stand alone article should be merged into their respective class articles.
Phase 2
Weaponry: All guns installed or operated aboard the battleships or battlecruisers in question will be covered under this phase. This phase also includes any missiles, CIWS systems, electronic warfare, and anti-submarine warfare systems. This phase should also include any associated fire control systems used by the battleship or battlecruiser in question if employed to assist with firing the ordinance. Whenever possible, weaponry information should be covered in existing articles, or created for this phase.
Phase 3
Major Historical Highlights: This phase will address major events that involved battleships or battlecruisers. This phase will center on events like the sailing of the Great White Fleet and the Battle of Jutland, where battleships and/or battlecruisers were highlighted in an important historical context.
Phase 4
Miscellaneous: Anything not immediately covered by the above three sections. This phase number is subject to shift depending on developments form the other three phases that may warrant an independent phase before this one.

[edit] Battle Honors

As this is a labor intensive project, all members are encouraged to hand out barnstars to recognize the hard work put into the article. Suggested barnstars and their criteria for award are listed below, but more awards can be found here. This list is by no means exhaustive, and is meant to cover only the most obvious areas for acclaim.
