Aside from the battleships themselves, the scope of this project also includes all battlecruisers, applicable weapons, ships classes, and other miscellaneous subjects which are to be included to ensure complete coverage of the subject. In the case of the latter, such subjects include topics that are related to the battleships but necessarily tied to any particular battleship or battleship class. In total it is expected that several hundred articles of featured quality will be required before the final FT nomination is made.
While there are multiple projects that have a stake in seeing this project succeed, it has been decided to run the project as a "special project" of the Military history WikiProject to utilize that project's vast resources in project coordination and infrastructure.
In much the same way these battleships also shared a similar story. Battleships were the undeniable gods of seaborne warfare in the late 19th and early to mid 20th century until their reign was savagely cut short by the rise of the aircraft carrier during the Second World War. Having established themselves as the new gods of seaborne warfare, these carriers banished the battleships first into reserve, then to the scrapyards, but a precious few managed to escape. Four were overhauled and served in the 1980s and 90s; only nine still exist today, as floating museums[Note 1]. Although they no longer exist as a powerful force, battleships have certainly left their mark on the world, and today still inspire awe among the public.
Due to the extreme size of this operation we will run this in multiple phases. Each phase is listed below, along with the roughly defined scope the phase covers. We are currently working on phase one.
As this is a labor intensive project, all members are encouraged to hand out barnstars to recognize the hard work put into the article. Suggested barnstars and their criteria for award are listed below, but more awards can be found here. This list is by no means exhaustive, and is meant to cover only the most obvious areas for acclaim.
