This page is part of the WikiProject on Football and is intended to be used as a guide on template standardization.

Contents

[edit] Navigational boxes (navboxes)

This is a system for allowing all navigational boxes related to football organisations to be placed on any page without having to have them as separate boxes, thus making it simple to, for example (unrealistic as it may be), group into one navbox the listing of the teams in the FA Premier League with the listing of the Asian football federations and the Man Utd infobox, together with standard links for Swedish football. Standard colours for header rows, standard methods for listing teams, and other standardizations have been introduced to make these boxes look good when combining several different pieces.

They should not be used for squad lists or manager histories or for other similar uses. These should use the templates outlined at below.

[edit] Templates used

The standardization consists of four templates, and only needs minor modification of the existing navboxes to work.

[edit] If the navbox is standardized

If the navbox you intend to include in an article already standardized (there may be a text at the template page saying so, but if there is not, test this by simply adding it to an article and preview, if this produces strange results, it is standardized, if it shows up as it should, it is not standardized), the only thing you need to do to include it in the article is to type in:

football box start
Football template
football box end

Of course replacing Football template with the navbox you intend to use. If there already are football box start and football box end tags included in the article, just place Football template somewhere in between them, there is no need for double sets of tags:

football box start
Football template
Another football template
football box end

[edit] If the navbox is not standardized

If the navbox you intend to include in an article is not standardized, a few modifications to the navbox are necessary if you want to use it with the football box start and football box end tags. In case you are a lazy Wikipedian, just add the template the regular way without modifying anything, but in case you are a good Wikipedian, do the following:

  1. Open up and edit the navbox page.
  2. Add the following at the absolute top of the navbox:
    <noinclude>football box start</noinclude>
This ensures that the template page of the navbox shows how the navbox looks when used instead of showing the code.
  3. Add the following under the previous code:
    |-
    !style="background:#BFD7FF;"|Navbox header
This produces the header of the navbox, with the standard colour, which may be changed when making for example club navboxes, but otherwise this colour (light blue) should be used for most templates. It also includes small links to template, template talk and edit template. The Navbox header should of course be modified to fit the purpose of the navbox you are creating/standardizing, but Template Name must be the exact name used after Template: in the title.
  4. Add the following under the previous code:
    football box inner start
This is a short piece of code that allows all kinds of navbox configurations to be displayed between the same football box start and football box end tags.
  5. Next add the contents of the navbox. When creating/standardizing a navbox listing things, the standard code is:
    |- style="text-align:center;"
    |
    <!-- NBSPs prevent wrapping-->
    First item |
    Second item |
    ...
    Last item
When creating/standardizing a navbox with tables, the standard code is:
    |- style="text-align:center;"
    |width="xx%"|1st row, 1st col
    |width="xx%"|...
    |width="xx%"|1st row, Last col
    |- style="text-align:center;"
    |2nd row, 1st col
    |...
    |2nd row, Last col
    And so on.
  6. Add the following under the previous code:
    football box inner end<noinclude>
    football box end
    using fb</noinclude>
The first tag is the ending of the earlier football box inner start, the second tag is the ending of the earlier football box start and the last tag adds a short explanation on how to use the template and also adds it in this category.

This should work on all navboxes that only contain one header and one type of formatting (listing or tables, not both). If the navbox is more complicated than that, you may either fiddle around a little yourself if you are confident in that you understand the use of the templates, or contact someone that can help you, preferably by asking on this page's talk page.

[edit] Information boxes (infoboxes)

Code Where to use
infobox football biography Articles about individual players or managers
infobox football official Articles about individual referees or other match officials
infobox football club Articles about clubs
infobox national football team Articles about national teams
infobox football league Articles about particular leagues within a country
infobox football league season Articles about individual seasons of a particular league

[edit] Squad lists

[edit] Clubs

For squad lists in club articles, use the following templates:

For instructions on how to use these templates, see Template talk:Football squad player

[edit] Players

For most major clubs and national teams, there are navboxes for the current squad that can be inserted at the foot of a player's biography. See Category:Football squad templates for a full list.

To create a new squad template (having first checked there isn't one already) use the following templates:

For instructions on how to use these templates, see Template:Football squad/doc and Template talk:Football squad.

[edit] Managers

For most major clubs and national teams, there are navboxes for the current squad that can be inserted at the foot of a player's biography. See Category:Football manager history templates for a full list.

[edit] Timesavers

The following templates are used with subst to save writing the entire link.

  • fc - Creates a link in the format of <clubname>
  • afc - Creates a link in the format of <clubname>
  • afc2 - Creates a link in the format of <clubname>
  • lfc - Creates a link in the format of <clubname>
  • efs - Creates a link in the format of <season>
  • wc - Creates a link in the format of <year> FIFA World Cup
  • nft - Creates a link in the format of <country>
  • fcl - Creates a link in the format of <flag icon><country>
  • nfa - Creates a link to national football associations, in custom formats, for example Netherlands or Iran

All such templates should be substituted. For example, use , which will produce <clubname>.

[edit] Stub notices

Listed below are the specific stub notices that can be used for stub articles.

Code Where to use
footy-bio-stub On stub articles about persons related to football (if they cannot be sorted into the correct region).
footyclub-stub On stub articles about football clubs in regions not covered above.
footy-org-stub On stub articles about football organizations.
footy-stub On stub articles about football not covered by any of the above templates.

There are also region-specific versions of many of the above templates. Refer to WP:STUBSORT for details.

[edit] Talk page templates

These should be only used on talk pages.

Code Where to use
football On talk pages of football articles.

[edit] Barnstars

Used to recognise users as being particularly useful to the WikiProject. These should be places on user talk pages.
