The WikiProject Big Brother newsletter is a monthly newsletter regarding the project. Started by Alucard 16, if you are interested in helping with the newsletter, please see the WikiProject's talkpage. - Big Brother On Air
There are currently six editions of Big Brother on air.: - Future Big Brother editions
There are three confirmed editions of Big Brother to air during the summer of 2008: - Project objectives
- Country-specific articles - See the next column.
- Nomination/Voting History Tables - Many articles do not follow the guidelines of Nominations table and Voting history table section. All nomination/voting history tables should follow the basic guideline on the main project page (Colors, terms, etc.) but should be adjusted for each country/region.
| - Country-specific
Please help us improve the country-specific articles by providing references, reception details, and production details. Please don't add trivia, quotes, or original research to these articles. Aside from Big Brother (U.S.), Big Brother (UK), Big Brother Australia, and Pinoy Big Brother most Big Brother articles do not follow the standard outline set out by the project. Most articles list statistic information from worldofbigbrother.com and trivia. - Assessment Scale
You will see Assessment scale information on each of the Big Brother article talk pages. The article will be rated according to the Assessment scale. Please consider looking at the status of the article to improve it. If the article has changed and the rating is outdated, you can change it or bring it up on the WikiProject talkpage. We are trying to improve these articles, hopefully bring some to good or featured status. We would like your help reaching this goal. We hope to bring main articles, Big Brother (TV series), Big Brother (UK), Big Brother (US), etc. to featured status. Please help us improve these article, based on the peer reviews and your knowledge of Wikipedia featured articles. - WP:Task Force
Heard of Wikipedia: Task Force? A task force is a non-independent subgroup of a larger WikiProject that covers some defined part of the WikiProject's scope. Task forces for WikiProject Big Brother can be used to focus on a specific country/region's Big Brother. A task force for example that would focus on Big Brother (U.S.) related articles could rely on WikiProject Big Brother for article structure information while providing more focus and customized guidelines for Big Brother (U.S.). Similar task forces can be created for Big Brother (UK), Big Brother Australia, etc. - Contributers

The newsletter is back! Many things have gone on during the past few months, but many things have not. While the assessment drive helped revitalize the assessment department of the project, many other departments have received no attention. Most notably: peer review and our "workgroups". - There's renewed interest in getting some of our nearly-there topics ready for a run at Featured Topic. Currently, there are a trio of potentials: the Procellaridae, the New World vultures and the choughs. Each of the first two have two articles that will need to be improved to at least GA-class before the topic can be nominated. For the procellarids, Procellariiformes is currently B-class and Diving-petrel is currently Start-class. For New World vultures, New World vulture is currently B-class, and Cathartes is currently Start-class. The choughs are currently up for Good Topic listing — but getting either Alpine Chough or Chough to FA-class would enable us to put that one up for featured topic as well.
- Last month saw the start of an Outline of Birds, which should eventually provide a project index, allowing interested readers to more easily access all of the articles associated with WikiProject Birds. Help to populate the outline with any articles you find missing.

Welcome to the Ninth issue of the WikiProject Christianity newsletter! Use this newsletter as a mechanism to inform yourselves about progress at the project and please be inspired to take more active roles in what we do. I am in the process of going through the various categories related to Christianity. I am finding that several of them may not have sufficient number of members to continue. By the end of the month, I hope to have the main category list finished (yeah, it might take that long, it's huge). At that time, I think we will review all the categories and see which may not have sufficient articles to continue. Please feel free to take part in the discussion regading what the minimum number of category items is, and how to deal with the non-qualifying categories, on the General Forum page. - The Tag & Assess drive has started! There are over 50,000 articles that need to be reviewed. We have already had a great start, with over 3,000 articles reviewed in the first few weeks! With many awards available, you can review whatever ranges you feel comfortable with. Instructions can be found on the drive's page.
- Due to real life issues limiting his time to contribute to the project, lead coordinator Erik has stepped down from his position. In his place, the other coordinators appointed Nehrams2020 to the lead. The coordinators plan to find another member to fill the new vacant coordinator position.
- Our project currently has over 62,500 film-related articles, with 58,000 that have been assessed by our assessment department! Remember to always add the {{Film|class=}} template to a film article's talk page so the project can get a better idea of what work still needs to be done. Below is a table showing a breakdown of our articles by class.
- Based on views, the top five most popular articles from our project this month were: Paranormal Activity (film), Twilight, 2009 in film, Internet Movie Database, and Star Trek. For a list of our project's top 1,000 most popular articles, see here. Consider improving one of these articles that is seen by thousands of people each month.
- Our articles continue to gain popularity, whether viewed on Wikipedia, or in new forms of media. The video service Vudu has announced that it will use summaries of Wikipedia film articles and will also link to them. Articles that you work on will help viewers decide what films to watch.
- Spotlight Update: Multiple films and film-related articles have reached GA and FA status in November. One article was also delisted from FA-status.

The GA Sweeps process has recently reached its first year anniversary. If you are unaware of what GA Sweeps is, it is a process put in place to help insure the integrity of the ever-growing number of GAs, by determining if the articles still meet the GA criteria. Experienced reviewers check each article, improving articles as they review them, and delisting those that no longer meet the criteria. Reviewers work on a specific category of GAs, and there are still many categories that need to be swept. In order to properly keep track of reviews, a set date was used to determine what articles needed to be reviewed (since any future GAs would be passed according to the most recent GA criteria). The number of GAs that were to be reviewed totals 2,808. Since the beginning of Sweeps, the progress has reviewed 981 by the end of July 2008 (or exempted them). For a table and chart breakdown of the current progress, see here. With more than twenty editors reviewing the articles, progress is currently a third of the way done. At this rate, it will take another two years to complete the Sweeps, and active involvement is imperative to completing on time. We are always looking for new reviewers, and if you are interested in helping in speeding up the Sweeps process and improving your reviewing skills, please contact OhanaUnited. - Did You Know...

Why did the prehistoric Polynesians sail to Hawaiʻi? Perhaps these voyages were undertaken for adventure, out of cultural pride, or even for raiding and conquest, trading goods, or forced exile. We will never know the reasons why, but we can investigate how it was achieved. Various ideas have been proposed, with two central hypotheses emerging to explain Polynesian voyaging to Hawaiʻi: either it was accidental or it was intentional. Hawaiian oral tradition records tales of ancient navigators traveling to and from Tahiti, providing a basis for intentional voyaging. David Malo, a 19th-century Native Hawaiian historian, documented genealogical chants telling the story of Moʻikeha, who voyaged back and forth between Hawaiʻi and Kahiki. Native Hawaiians believe these chants have a historical basis and to some extent recount the history of their culture. To test the intentional voyaging hypothesis, Ben Finney, Tommy Holmes, and Herb Kawainui Kane of the Polynesian Voyaging Society built a modern, full-scale replica of a waʻa kaulua, a Polynesian double-hulled voyaging canoe. The 20-meter canoe was named Hōkūleʻa, the "Star of Gladness", deriving its name from Arcturus, the guiding star of Hawaiian navigators. In 1976, a crew of 17 sailed 2,500 miles (4,020 km) from Maui to Tahiti in approximately 31 days, guided only by the traditional, instrumentless wayfinding techniques of Micronesian navigator Mau Piailug. Since her original voyage, Hōkūleʻa has completed at least nine more voyages to Micronesia, Polynesia, Japan, Canada, and the United States. In 2007, Hawaiian oral histories found additional support when ancient basalt adzes used for constructing canoes in the Tuamotu Archipelago were traced to the Hawaiian island of Kahoʻolawe. The westernmost point of the island of Kahoʻolawe is known as the Lae O Kealaikahiki (Point of the Pathway to Tahiti). This area is thought to have been a ceremonial launching site in the 13th century for voyages between Hawaiʻi and Tahiti. - Eddie Aikau
Memorial plate dedicated to Eddie Aikau on the Hōkūleʻa Hōkūleʻa capsized in 1978 southwest of the Island of Molokaʻi. Crew member Eddie Aikau, a Native Hawaiian champion lifeguard and surfer, tried to paddle a surfboard to the island of Lānaʻi to find help and save his crew. The crew was later rescued, but Aikau was never seen again. Because of his sacrifice, Aikau is considered one of Hawaii's greatest contemporary heroes, and his selfless act of courage is often portrayed as a symbol of the "Aloha spirit". A list of open tasks and a proposed outline for expansion can be found on Talk:Hokulea/temp. Everyone is welcome to make suggestions and help improve the article. - References

- Outreach
The Obento Musubi has begun updating both the invite and welcome templates. The templates have been moved into template space with shorter names. To use them, simply type {{Hawaii invite}} on the talk page of an editor who might want to join the project, or {{Hawaii welcome}} on the talk page of a new member. These templates are one essential tool for recruiting new members, so please make use of them in coordination with either your personal watchlist or in combination with the project watchlist. If you see a non-member making good edits to multiple Hawaii-related articles, try to combine the template with a personal message on their talk page inviting them to join the project. - Project template
The Obento Musubi has also been working on redesigning the project template, but for now, this work is mostly confined to Template:WPHawaii/sandbox. If you run across a strange looking template on the talk page, this is due to experimentation on the live template which in hindsight, was a mistake. (To fix it, simply make a null edit: click edit this page and then click save page without making any changes to the talk page. Leave the edit summary blank.) It is unclear how much the template should deviate from standards currently in use. Generally, project templates should appear uniform in design, although many projects have added project-specific icons for their task forces and work groups. The template still needs a B-Class checklist and FL-Class assessment criteria. | - Member interview
Part three of an extended interview with Newsletter founder The Obento Musubi (see part one and two). What should we do with the list of English words of Hawaiian origin? Did you read the discussion? - I believe the agreement they reached was a reasonable one. When editing the list, I, too, noticed many words that many mainlanders would not be familiar with. I believe that the words now on the list are fine, because they're educational and informative to mainlanders but they have also become assimilated into the English language (at least, they have in the isles). It's a great idea to split the list into two. My only fear is that the list would be extremely short. However, if it's feasible, then I say, let's go for it!
Looking ahead at the topic of December's newsletter, the Hawaiian plate lunch is a microcosm of the ethnic diversity of Hawaiʻi. The article should investigate the intertwining history of foreign immigration, life on the plantation, and even its culinary contributions to Hawaiian Pidgin. Have you read Rachel Laudan's The Food of Paradise? - I'm a sucker for plate lunches, and I would eat one everyday if I had the choice. The article is very short right now, and it would be great if we could expand the article at least tenfold. If it's possible, I'd also like to see some infoboxes go on the page. You are correct regarding ethnic diversity. Plate lunches symbolize the diversity in the islands. There are items that come from all over the world. Rice is definitely an Asian staple, and you can have chicken katsu from Japan, chow mein noodles from China, or meat jun from Korea. I think it would be really interesting to look at how spelling differences occurred. For example, the Korean dish is very commonly referred to in the islands as "meat jun", yet according to the article, its proper spelling is "jeon". Also, taegu, a Korean side dish common in the islands, seems to me to be nonexistent in Korea. The article on Wikipedia redirects to Daegu, a Korean city. Sadly, no, I haven't read The Food of Paradise. I do know it would probably make my mouth water more than it already is!
- Articles needing attention
Trivia expert Tbsdy lives (formerly Ta bu shi da yu) has commented on the procedure for dealing with trivia sections on the project. Please take a moment to read his recommendations. Three simple steps are required to deal with trivia sections: - Remove unsourced material from the article and place it on the talk page with a request for sourcing
- If the trivia is sourced, try to merge it into an existing section
- For trivial material that cannot be merged, place it on the talk page
In October, WolterBot identified 16 articles with trivia sections. As of November, 11 articles remain tagged. - Dispute resolution update
Disputes are on the rise, with at least 25 current disputes. Questions have also been raised about new additions to Bernice P. Bishop Museum and Falls of Clyde due to recent accusations against the Museum in the media. Chrisrus has also expressed concerns with the accuracy and scope of List of Native Hawaiians. Visit the talk pages of these articles to contribute to the discussion. - Next Issue
- Plate lunch - from serving hungry immigrants straight out of the plantation lunch wagon to today's local menus, plate lunches are Hawaii's folk cuisine with an Asian twist. It all begins with "two scoop" rice, beef, fish (Ahi poke, lomi lomi salmon), and/or chicken or pork (kalua pork, pork lau lau) and a side of macaroni salad. Don't forget the haupia. Ono grinds.

- Homosexuality at Good Article Review!
An unfortunate effect of a group less active than in the past is that our articles lose integrity. This one is at Good Article Review for that reason. The talk page is quite active as a result. You have the opportunity to help. This is the corest of our core articles, and it needs some attention because it gets a lot of controversial input from many sides. If you can spare any time to edit the article, please do what you can. - Paragraph 175 is at Featured Article Review!
Soon after we were informed that Homosexuality is being scrutinized, we heard the same for one of our few Featured Articles. As a participant of the Featured Article process, I think this is actually a good thing. The standards for Featured Articles are getting higher with time. But as a member of this project, that means that a few of ours may be de-listed unless someone can swoop in and save them. This one has to do with the designation of homosexuality as a crime in Germany. Most of this article's sources are in German. If anyone has any particular skill in this area, please lend a hand! - Gay bathhouse is at Good Article Review! Wtf is going on?
I know you folks think I have much experience in a gay bathhouse, and I hate to disappoint you, but I actually do not. I seem like the sort of person who likes to stroll about in a towel. Shocking, no? It appears that Ashleyvh is single-handedly addressing all the problems with this article at its GA Review. While that's pretty impressive, it's also no doubt exhausting. Can anyone help out there? - Two GAs and a nominee!
In what I hope will counter the jolt of re-evaluating three Good or Featured Articles, José Sarria and Janet Jackson as gay icon passed as Good Articles, and Black Cat Bar (famous San Francisco oft-raided gay bar) is nominated, all by Otto4711. Rock on, man. You're a machine. Good luck with your nominations. What is it about women that make them gay icons? And are there lesbian icons that aren't lesbians? How about bisexual icons? Am I the only lesbian who reacts with soul-trembling fear at the sight of Angelina Jolie? - LGBT articles for deletion
New WP:LGBT studies member Pinkkeith has done this cool thing. If you click on that link, you'll see all the articles, categories, templates, and miscellany up for deletion. They're usually there because they're not considered to be not notable. That can be a relative concept, and sometimes it has to be argued that topics pertaining to gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender issues are notable.
- Completely naked women!
Ha! Made you look! Even the guys are looking. Gay pioneers Kay Lahusen's and Barbara Gittings' collection of photographs are up at the New York Public Library. Want to see images of the first Pride march in 1970 in New York City? How about Sylvia Rivera, drag queen extraordinaire, and Stonewall Riots participant? Or the contact sheet for The Ladder that showed full-face lesbians in print for the first time in US history? Ok I did mention naked women, and it's true. I found naked pictures of Barbara Gittings. But I scrolled through all of them and you'll have to as well. I'm not that mean, though. Here she is in the shower. How cute is she? | - Tagging articles
It seems a recurring issue which articles to tag, and what to say about a topic that's tagged. Certainly, because an article falls under our scope doesn't necessarily make the person gay. Florida Governor Charlie Crist has been rumored to be gay in some newspaper accounts. Although we all know Fred Phelps is supergay, he won't admit it so instead he does the absolutely awfulest anti-gay things on the planet to deflect suspicion. NAMBLA, the red headed stepchild of the LGBT world, is tagged with an explanation we have yet to decide if we'll keep.
- Member Spotlight: Benjiboi
In the lurking I do around and about on Wiki, I've long been astounded at the forbearance Benjiboi has for the utterly insane. Perhaps not so much, since the message on Benji's talk page notes frequent absences due to homophobia and transphobia. But it takes some kind of ... something that I don't have to face the constant anti-gay POV Benji does. Benjiboi is a a bit of a WikiFaerie, a WikiGnome and also a member of the Article Rescue Squadron in addition to being a LGBT project member. A few of Benjiboi's favorite links for making the wikiverse more fab are: - Manual of style, a must for anyone redecorating an article.
- Reliable sources in content review processes, a wonderful and fully linked essay about sourcing and why we need more and better sources.
- Google scholar, which also searches Google books, is a great help in finding reliable sources.
- Member Spotlight: Becksguy
Becksguy didn’t start actively editing until May 2007. His most frequent tasks on Wiki include reverting vandalism to LGBT articles and creating new project-related articles. He comes from New York state, and to prove not all of us are teenagers (ha! I am so totally 15!) he's in his 60s and retired. Becksguy considers his biggest triumph on Wikipedia so far was a DYK in December 2007 for the first-ever newspaper report on what became AIDS, in the New York Native. He's also helped save several project-related articles from deletion. His lowest moment here was getting involved in the discussion on a particular terrorism related article, thinking he could help calm the roiled waters on an extremely contentious subject with multiple edit wars and passionate editors. Here at WP:LGBT, he creates and improves articles that present notable LGBT related subjects in a fair and balanced way, and tries to include more of the significant alternative sexuality related subjects without being an activist, and works to better source project-related articles. On Wikipedia as a whole, he says, "I think we need to learn better what processes work for a massive collaborative project. Some of what worked well for a more informal small project doesn’t scale up well. Process is not as important when the participants know each other. We need to get more of the current members to be more active. If more members were energized, the project would be able to accomplish more. We should be, in effect, the smaller and included Wikipedia for LGBT related subjects. Overall, I wish we could focus more on content creation and improvement, and less on vandal fighting." - Fresh faces to brighten our pages

- The Academy Content Drive concluded on 31 October. The first place Golden Wiki went to TomStar81 for 13 entries; the Silver Wiki was awarded to YellowMonkey for 11 entries, and Patar knight was presented with the Bronze Wiki for 3 entries. All other entrants were awarded the WikiChevrons or a barnstar for their contributions. Thank you to everyone who fielded an entry! All editors are encouraged to check out the newly expanded Academy.
- A discussion about the notability of military people has resulted in an update to our in-house style guide. Prompted by some recent "articles for deletion" discussions, members felt that we should provide clearer guidance on the types of person that are most likely to meet Wikipedia's biographical notability criteria. The resulting advice, which you can see here, should be very helpful in both future deletion discussions and in deciding where best to focus article-writing efforts.
- Our Task Force housekeeping discussion is now coming to a close. In October a number of proposals were made for rationalising our extensive list of Task forces. Although a few areas remain to be decided, project members have approved the changes summarised here. These will be enacted shortly, so if you haven't yet had your say, now's the time!

| - From the Outreach Department
- Hello all. As you're probably aware this is the first newsletter since August. I had hoped that although I was unable to write one for the ensuing months, somebody would have picked it up, but that was sadly not to be. However I am back, and that should hopefully mean a new newsletter every month, like it used to be. There has been a lot of work done on novel related articles in my absence, however the project does not appeared to have progressed very much, which I'm sure you would all agree, is a shame as it holds such promise for Wikipedia. But with the new year approaching I am hoping that things will turn around, so I urge you all to get involved with the project in whatever way you can, and help it achieve its full potential. All that's left for me now is to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Hello, WikiProject Council. This is the sixth issue of WikiProject Puerto Rico's newsletter. The newsletter is intended to help all members to keep up with the latest news relating to the project. Continuing our new format, this issue will discuss the news, achievements and other incidences relevant to our project between fall and winter. - Caribbean~H.Q. 22:34, 16 February 2009 (UTC) | - Flags and records
Greetings, during the past months, there has been a lot of activity and active discussion surrounding articles within our scope. Of particular interest is one that took place in Flag of Puerto Rico, in which several project members exposed their points of view regarding the tones of our flag. Ultimately, research brought forth a severe loophole in the regulation employed by the Senate of Puerto Rico. Our flag doesn't have official tones! Attempting to prevent future conflicts, I presented a proposal in the project's talk page. The subsequent discussion served as an perfect example of consensus. Thanks to everyone for your participation. In other news, our friend Tony the Marine added another impressive achievement to his brilliant resume. On December 8, 2008, his DYK hook for Ivan Castro (soldier) broke the previous all-time record for more views, receiving 71,300 visits. Tony has also been actively cooperating with this Newsletter, the inclusion of a new "Did you Know?" section, was entirely his idea. - Caribbean~H.Q. 22:34, 16 February 2009 (UTC) | - Users who helped with this newsletter

Welcome to the fourth issue of the WikiProject Saw's newsletter! Use this newsletter as a mechanism to inform yourselves about progress at the project and please be inspired to take more active roles in what we do. Another year, and another Saw. The penultimate(?) entry to the series, Saw V, will becoming out in less than two weeks. We would encourage all members to get more involved and if you are wondering what with, please ask. CyberGhostface 18:17, 29 October 2007 (UTC) | - Pages Needing Cleanup
| - Monthly Collaboration
- Perhaps for the remainder of this month (and the next couple of ones) we can work on Saw V's article. I have a feeling once the film comes out the page will be filled to the brim with information, a lot of which could be trimmed. The other film articles could use some work as well.
| - Newsletter Challange
- Important Right now the biggest challenge is to save List of traps in the Saw film series from deletion. There are two things that can be done. First you can go to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of traps in the Saw film series (3rd nomination) and voice your argument as to why it should be kept. Important: read over Wikipedia:Arguments to avoid in deletion discussions. Saying stuff like "Saw rules, it should be kept" will not help at all. Just as important: improving the article so it has a fighting chance. I.E. Focus less on plot of the films but more "real world" information...I.E. the traps' impact on popular culture, reception they may have received, cited comparisions and allusions to actual devices (just pulling comparisions out of thin air would be original research.
- Try to make the character articles more encyclopedic by making them less in-universe. See Jigsaw and Amanda's articles for guidance. Also see Jason Voorhees, which is a featured article. (Obviously there is more information on Jason available than the Saw characters, but it is worth looking at to see what's considered the best of the best.) Because of the nature of the series, poorly written articles could be considered 'deletion-bait' and 'cruft'...the better written the articles, the less likely this would happen.
- Some of the plot articles seem to be overtly long. Without bowdlerizing them, maybe we could try to make them a bit shorter and concise.
- Try to invite more members to this project. If you know any Saw fans who are good with computers, invite them to Wikipedia. The more the merrier.

This is the monthly newsletter of WikiProject Tropical Cyclones. The Hurricane Herald aims to give a summary, both of the activities of the WikiProject and global tropical cyclone activity. If you wish to change how you receive this newsletter, or no longer wish to receive it, please add your username to the appropriate section on the mailing list. This newsletter covers all of July 2008. Please visit this page and bookmark any suggestions of interest to you. This will help improve monitoring of the WikiProject's articles. Storm of the month Hurricane Bertha was a rare early season Cape Verde-type hurricane and the easternmost forming July tropical storm on record. Bertha became the longest-lived pre-August Atlantic tropical cyclone on record and the longest-lived tropical cyclone in the Atlantic Basin since Ivan in 2004. The second named storm of the 2008 Atlantic hurricane season, Bertha developed from a tropical wave that emerged off the coast of Africa on July 1. After initially remaining weak while tracking westward, Bertha began to strengthen on July 6, and the next day it quickly intensified to reach peak winds of 120 mph (195 km/h). The hurricane weakened during the day on July 8, and after turning to a northwest drift, it passed within 40 miles (64 km) of Bermuda on July 14 before moving northeast away from the island. Bertha became extratropical on July 20 to the east of Newfoundland, after causing minimal damage and three indirect drowning deaths. Other tropical cyclone activity
- Northwestern Pacific Ocean – After several weeks of no activity, Typhoon Kalmaegi developed in the middle of the month, passing near northern Luzon before turning to the north and making landfalls on Taiwan and China; the typhoon caused heavy crop damage and 18 deaths. Later in the month, Typhoon Fung-Wong caused further flooding in Taiwan and China. In addition to the two named typhoons, PAGASA issued advisories on Tropical Depression Gener early in the month.
- Eastern Pacific Ocean – Four named storms developed in the basin during the month, of which three became hurricanes; Hurricanes Elida, Fausto, and Genevieve, as well as Tropical Storm Douglas, all remained offshore, though in the middle of the month a tropical depression brought rainfall to Mexico after hitting near Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán. Hurricane Boris and Tropical Storm Cristina continued from the previous month.
- Atlantic Ocean– In addition to Hurricane Bertha, two other tropical cyclones developed in the month. Tropical Storm Cristobal formed off the coast of Florida, bringing rainfall and gusty winds to coastal North Carolina and later Nova Scotia. The most damaging Atlantic tropical cyclone during the month was Hurricane Dolly, which formed on July 20 in the western Caribbean Sea. After tracking northwestward through the Gulf of Mexico, it reached peak winds of 100 mph (155 km/h) before moving ashore on South Padre Island, Texas. The hurricane caused flash flooding from heavy rainfall, with damage in the United States estimated at $1.2 billion; across its path Dolly caused 21 deaths, including 17 from landslides in Guademala, as well as two indirect fatalities.
Member of the month The July member of the month is User:Plasticup. Joining the project in August of 2007, Plasticup first became an asset in working on the active article series on Hurricane Dean. After a period of inactivity, the user returned to produce two featured articles this month, both interesting meteorological histories. Additionally, Plasticup has focused some attention to articles in the 2005 season. Keep up the good work! New and improved articles - There were five new pieces of Featured content : 1998 Pacific hurricane season (FT), Tropical Storm Chantal (2001), Meteorological history of Hurricane Dean, 2007 Atlantic hurricane season, and Meteorological history of Hurricane Gordon (1994)
- New Good articles include: Atlantic tropical cyclone, Cyclone Bola, Maximum sustained wind, Hurricane Henriette (2007)
- New storm articles include: Great Barbados hurricane, 2002 Oman cyclone, Tropical Storm Kiko (2007)
- New non-storm articles include: Meteorological history of Hurricane Jeanne, Maximum potential intensity
Project News During July, there were two large changes to the operations of the WikiProject. First, WPTC adopted and helped develop the WP 1.0 B-Class criteria, and was among the first projects to use a "forced" B-Class rubric as part of their assessment schemes. This means that all the articles tagged with {{hurricane|class=B|...}} are automatically reassessed as {{C-Class}}, unless all the values in the checklist are marked as passed. In other words, to mark an article as B-Class, the banner needs to be changed to {{hurricane |class=B |B1=yes |B2=yes |B3=yes |B4=yes |B5=yes |B6=yes | ... }} B1, B2, B3, B4, B5 and B6 stand for each of the six points in the WikiProject's rubric. The banner also has the capability to mark why an article doesn't meet the new B-Class standards: Typing the following in an article's talk page {{hurricane |class=B |B1=no |B2=yes |B3=yes |B4=yes |B5=yes |B6=yes | ... }} will assess an article as C-Class, and mark that the article is not a B because of bad references. Articles assessed as B's before the introduction of the forced checklist were automatically reassessed as C's, but they're awaiting new reviews to check if they still meet the new B criteria. These articles are listed on Category:Tropical cyclone articles with incomplete B-Class checklists. Currently, there's 117 articles in the category—let's try to shrink that number to zero before the next edition of the Herald! The other major change to the WikiProject was the addition of three task forces: the storm articles task force, season articles task force, and the tropical meteorology articles task force. These three task forces allow WPTC to see the progress of the different areas of the WikiProject. Currently, all 1,076 WPTC articles have been assigned to one of the three task forces, but any unsorted articles will be placed in Category:Unsorted tropical cyclone articles as they're tagged with {{hurricane}}. In order to categorize an article, the banner needs to be modified from {{hurricane|...}} to: {{hurricane |storms-task-force=yes | ... }} {{hurricane |seasons-task-force=yes | ... }} {{hurricane |meteo-task-force=yes | ... }} which will sort the pages into the storms, seasons, and tropical meteorology task forces, respectively. - —
