This page is a list of important subjects for which Wikipedia should have a corresponding high-quality article, and ideally a featured article. It also serves as a centralized watchlist. This page is an expanded version of Wikipedia:Vital articles, as a huge list of highly notable articles, which could be maintained easier as a set of sub-lists of a thousand notable articles in each sublist. It formerly listed approximately 2,000 Wikipedia articles, but had expanded to 3,652 (11 Sep 09) in an effort to provide 10x the details of the vital list (not just double). For example, - horse/dog now include breeds/types: Appaloosa, Quarter horse, Beagle, Dalmatian, etc.
- actors were expanded with the top 50 actors of AFI's "100 Years...100 Stars";
- film directors were expanded to include those who won 2 Academy Awards;
- section "Olympic/sports figures" was added with Top 100 of 20th Century & more;
- section "Journalists" was added to include major TV/print reporters;
- section "Magicians/mystics" was added for Houdini, Edgar Cayce, Nostradamus, ...
- food meat/cheese was expanded to list types: Ham, Porkchop, Edam, Colby,...
- food fruit/vegetables were expanded: Guava, Mango, Pear, Squash, Turnip, Yam, ...
- "automobile" was expanded as 35 makes and over 50 models.
The intent is to represent a cross-section of topics, as groups of the most-notable in a field. The goal is not just a short list, but a representative short list: the 1 topic "horse" was expanded to include breeds, famous racehorses & others.
