[edit] Suggestions for Music Portal features

Transcluded from Portal:Music/Featured articles/Suggest.

[edit] Elliot Goldenthal

[edit] Tarkan

  • Support - Good quality article with references. Interesting in that it's not the usual "anglo-saxon" article about anglosaxon-originated music. Would bring some colour to the portal and tell people that music is not entirely about mainstream American pop-rock.... - --Teemeah Gül Bahçesi 20:32, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Jargon

Many music articles need to be made more clear to the lay reader (see:Wikipedia:Explain jargon and Wikipedia:Guide to writing better articles#Think of the reader).

These include music, interval (music), and scale (music).

[edit] Bands

  • Butterfly Messiah - Needs formatting. It appears as though the bulk of the page was directly copy+pasted from the official site. --Blu Aardvark 23:46, 10 July 2005 (UTC)
    • The page appears to have been formatted, though there's very little information. Is it time to remove this page from the list? --Niwikki 09:21, 16 December 2005 (UTC)
  • Boys Night Out - This page is awful. Its been tagged for NPOV, clean up, and wikify. The person who wrote the majority of it seems to write like a music critic. --Windsamurai 21:47, 9 September 2005 (UTC)
  • Dangerous Toys - Semi Disbanded is a made up section header (Current Projects seems more appropriate). Much of the Section content promotes upcoming commercial product releases - including some for other bands. Needs a shift in focus to actual (i.e., current or previous) Dangerous Toys releases.
  • Deadsy - This page has potential. It has alot of easily accessible information, but everything is unsourced. Some things are easy to find, well others are not so much. Lamentingvampire09 07:20, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
  • Poison - This article has an extreme fan pov, and is riddled to the core with ridicules statements, trying to make the band sound like its one of the greatest groups on the planet. Avador 19:31, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
  • Shattersphere - This page is very biased. Just look at the intro, "Imagine the ultimate combination of Rock and Metal, a genre of music that can dominate the Mainstream world and still have enough capacity to steamroll into the Underground. Now take a quintet of driven, talented, and professional musicians and the result is Shattersphere.".

[edit] Musicians

  • List of compositions by Schubert - Only one of the Schubert symphonies has a page with any information right now. MikeCapone 22:36, 30 Dec 2004 (UTC)
    • As of 6/2006, there are pages for four (5-7-8-9) late symphonies. (The early ones are much less frequently heard; someone who owns them could reference their record notes ... short articles are better than nothing for starters, they will get filled in eventually.)Twang 02:31, 27 June 2006 (UTC)
  • Robert Schumann - Same here, only very few of his major works have their own articles as of now. MikeCapone 22:36, 30 Dec 2004 (UTC)
  • Antonio Salieri - Quite a few issues here; see its talk page for details. In summary, very POV, disputed facts (like Mozart accusing Salieri of attempted murder). --C S 02:26, Jan 3, 2005 (UTC)
  • Robert Hardy (bassist) — The last two sentences about this artist's webbed feet and his lies seems farfetched. Could somebody check these facts? Thank you. — RJH 22:37, 10 Mar 2005 (UTC)
  • Guru Surajananda - apparently an eminent Indian musician, appeared on AfD due to difficulties in researching and establishing notability. There is copious material on the web, but it needs someone better able to understand the cultural references to expand this beyond a stub.
  • Cassiya: basically, we need to expand on this page or it will be duhleetudd. PLZ HELP HERE people! Put in ANY information you can!!

[edit] Opera

Alright, his birthdate has been fixed per grove, I removed a broken external link from Sopranist (which he wasn't). Giambattista is just a common contraction of his given names, so I've left that alone. I think that's all. Makemi 00:19, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Genres

  • The Space music article urgently requires outside opinions on a number of matters relating to definition of the term and its context with the ambient music continuum. --Gene_poole (talk) 23:44, 8 March 2008 (UTC)
  • The Dark Cabaret article is in need of some serious TLC. It had four infoboxes on it before I got ahold of it; now it has a fifth. Please, if you can, fix this article. In its current state, it's a blight. 71.228.173.7 (talk) 22:12, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
  • There's an RfC going on at Talk:Pop music - input would be greatly appreciated! Sssoul (talk) 12:10, 7 November 2008 (UTC)
  • The former featured article blues and in particular its section musical style needs much cleanup and references. Could some music expert have a look at it. Thanks. Vb 11:32, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Singers

  • Christina Aguilera's Stripped album article doesn't cover the singles "Fighter", "Cant Hold Us Down" and "The Voice Within" as much as the first two singles on the album.
  • Aziza Mustafa Zadeh is poorly written. Lot's of grammatical mistakes and not much information.
    • I made a bunch of headway with the writing & grammar, but the article is still pretty thin. Bubamara 09:59, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)
  • Geoffrey Oryema includes only a rewording of his amazon.com description (from CD cover) and external links, as I don't have access to any biographical sources - any takers? - Kwill 16:53, Jun 12, 2005 (UTC)
  • Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - He was a major Qawwali singer. The article needs to be improved a lot. I would do it myself, but I have little knowledge of music. Anyone who studies music will find working on this article very interesting, as his music is uniqe and this man was famous the world over. Anyway, the lead needs expansion, better description of his music in technical terms needs to be given, and the article needs more references. --Zaindy٨٧ 12:21, 9 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Events

  • Woodford Folk Festival - The woodford folk festival is a massive annual event that involves hundreds of thousands of people and has been around for almost 20 years in some form but the entry is absolutely tiny and does nothing more then acknowledge its existence.

[edit] Record Labels

[edit] Music from Television program

  • Music of La Femme Nikita: the article lacks sources (documentation for verification) and appears to be the product of original research: WP:NOR. (See "Broadcasting" section above.) --NYScholar 22:51, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Freestyle_rap

Unevenly written, needs editing. Rtfisher

[edit] Kid Rock

Bad--Edmundssteven 05:49, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] The Music Man (song)

This has the potential to be a very useful article, if only any information on its origins can be supplied. Even the identity of the recording would be a major step. Matthew Platts 02:22, 25 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] List of best selling music artists

Sounds like a fantastic idea, but large omissions and in most instances no sources have made the information appear very innacurate. Peter S. 10:41, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Music of the United States

Article is well written, heavily sourced, much too long, and incomplete. Organization is incoherent. Says more about Klezmer than Jazz. This has the makings of a featured article that went astray. Part of the Arts of the United States series. Durova 19:44, 10 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Italian popular music

Article lacks coherence and import. The sections vary considerably in content and focus, with some amounting to little more than lists. Someone with a broad understanding of modern Italian music, including its influences, could really help this one along. Vineviz 15:08, 14 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Musical Notation

What is there is good, but the article is eurocentric. Musical notations from other cultures should be covered. Nannus 18:25, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Harp, Lyre, Flute, Drum

Eurocentric. Nannus 18:25, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Milton Preves (Violist)

Lacking enough source information, was only able to build up a basic bio of his life from a obituatry in the Chicago Sun-Times from 2000. Internet sources are very minimal, so other alternate source will have to be found with more information. Also, I was unable to find anything on his birth date, though in the obituary, his exact death is mentioned. Compuguy1088 19:33, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Sintir

needs the atention of someone with knowledge of African instruments. A photograph would be great as well... Francisco Valverde 16:02, 4 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Krakebs

is another African musical instrument with only a very small stub article. --Francisco Valverde 16:14, 4 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Singing

Short, not detailed, no pictures, uninteresting, needs cleanup. Tom Stringham 00:24, 30 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Rhythmic mode

For over one year now, Rhythmic mode has required someone who knows something about music to take a looks at it. Hyacinth has presented specifications of what is required on the article's talk page. It would be cool if someone could head over there and help out.--Commander Keane 21:23, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

Request made for original author (User:Antandrus) to help research needed information. MarkBuckles (talk) 05:33, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Arioso

I've translated Arioso from fr:Arioso. Being not a specialist in music, I thought I'd bring it to your attention, to see if it makes any sense at all! --Wonderfool 10:29, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

This article needs considerable attention. It makes some sense, but is very incomplete, and in some instances inaccurate. The French article as of today's date is certainly somewhat improved from the version translated two years ago - a new translation would be a good starting point. Vicar98230 (talk) 18:45, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Music and Mathematics

This article really needs to be expanded on for what is a huge topic. Madder 13:52, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Music festival

Read it and weep. Almost non-existent article, I've heard they are quite popular. meltBanana 01:04, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

  • I've added it to Wikipedia:Requests for expansion and stubbed it, so hopefully it will get more attention now, especially considering it has well over 500 articles linking to it. Madder 19:09, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Embouchure

Not referenced, and past versions have received complaints from professors and students in the field. -- Zanimum 17:27, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

This article mentions Reinhardt and Farkas. Both of these people have written books on the subject of embouchure, and permission to cite these texts could probably be easily attained. Another great reference is David Hickman's "Trumpet Pedagogy". This book retails for about $44. Being a trombonist, I would also recommend Ed Kleinhammer, Reginald Fink, and the Alessi/Bowman edition of the Arban Method. --Mdwilber (talk) 19:13, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

Sound production and choice of equipment (mouthpiece) is highly dependent on mouthpiece placement. What I mean is that a player with a 70/30 upper/lower embouchure is going to be able to play lower more easily, while the other way around enables the player to play higher more easily. For this reason, this fact should be given a greater amount of emphasis. --Mdwilber (talk) 19:23, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Music in Berlin

Berlin was and is an import musical center. Please help building this article from scratch! Matthias Röder 18:18, 23 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] King Crimson

I am currently trying to get this to GA status and eventually featured article status, but I am having major problems with the section on the band's music and its themes, after having done major work on the history section. Any help would be appreciated.-h i s s p a c e r e s e a r c h 17:17, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Tim Nordwind & Dan Konopka

These articles are stubs right now and I want to work on them but don't seem able to find any extra info. on these musicians on the net. Any help will be appreciated. Rosa 19:58, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Carrie Underwood discography

This article failed the WP:FLC due to the ongoing dispute of the format of the article. Please, we need to resolve this dispute ASAP, and the only to do it is by voting. Voting is occurring at the talk page. It would be nice to have your opinions on this. We need to have scope and opinion from other non-Carrie Underwood fans who can provide useful criticisms. Please contribute! Cheers. σмgнgσмg(talk) 08:58, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Valeriya

Smacks of a promotional piece with inflated claims ("the Madonna of Russia"?). Could use some help on this, esp. from anyone conversant in the language; I've posted a similar request at WP:RUSSIA. I want to assume good faith but I've had little luck with Google; hopefully someone can help prove my instincts wrong this once. —Hello, Control Hello, Tony 16:32, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Music collecting strategies is born!

Music collecting strategies and Talk:Music collecting strategies are born! Please enhance and shield them from danger. Jidanni (talk) 01:43, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Susan Hurley (composer)‎

Could somebody please take a look at Susan Hurley (composer)‎? I am in a bit of an edit war with a very stubborn newbie who refuses to follow Wikipedia style formatting. I've never heard of this composer, and I have no opinion as to anything about her, but the article reads like a resume, full of sentence fragments, and the newbie owner of the article is repeatedly attacking me for having the temerity to suggest that his prose is not deathless. Corvus cornixtalk 23:16, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Timeline of musical events

If this article is in any way useful it should be linked on the music portal.

Though, I don't think in its present state it is useful. It's not neutral. It should either be a mere link list of articles on the individual years in music or - if some events are pointed out there- someone should make sure that only really significant events are mentioned, not the birth of some musicians or the release of some albums. At least, if people think some event is important enough to be mentioned there they should make clear why. Could someone from the music project please have a look at this?--Sylvia Anna (talk) 21:56, 5 October 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Sofia Rotaru earns $100,000,000 a year?

The article on Sofia Rotaru features a claim of her having declared an income of $100 millions for 2007. This would make her the highest earning solo performer in the world in that year, compared to e.g. Madonna earnign 37 . The claim is based on a synthesis of two unlinked claims by the Deputy Chairman of the State Tax Administration of Ukraine. The annual incomes of similar Post-Soviet entertainers did not exceeded $9 millions (Alla Pugacheva, Filipp Kirkorov, Maxim Galkin). See all the evidence on Talk:Sofia Rotaru. --Jaan Pärn (talk) 12:38, 17 November 2009 (UTC)

The above mentioned problem is just one example out of many. The article features more outrageous claims (including Rotaru being the first ever rapper in the 1970s), weasel words (Rotaru is considered a Pop Queen etc) and unencyclopaedic content (info about her impersonators, friends etc). All of the issues have been raised on the respective talk page accompanied by a nasty edit war resulting in every possible improvement reverted by a raving fan of Rotaru. A 3O process was initiated which failed completely, mostly, because it is solely a content issue. The article in its current shape is a parody of what a wikiarticle on a musician should be and therefore in bad need of attention. --Jaan Pärn (talk) 13:48, 23 November 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Concert is an unreferenced shambles

What ought to be a fundamental topic for this project is a disaster of an article. It needs a complete rewrite. Volunteers needed. LeadSongDog come howl 04:30, 2 December 2009 (UTC)
