| Files for deletion Files for deletion (FfD) is for listing images and other media files which are unneeded. Files that have been listed here for more than 7 days are eligible for deletion if there is no clear consensus in favour of keeping them or no objections to deletion have been raised. To quote the non-free content criteria, "it is the duty of users seeking to include or retain content to provide a valid rationale; those seeking to remove or delete it are not required to show that one cannot be created — see burden of proof." For undeletion requests, first contact the administrator who deleted the file. If you are unable to resolve the issue with that administrator, the matter should be brought to deletion review. If you have questions if something should be deleted, consider asking at Media Copyright Questions. | Examples of what you may request here
- Obsolete - The file has been replaced by a better version.
- Orphan - The file is not used on any pages in Wikipedia.
- Unencyclopedic - The file doesn't seem likely to be useful in any Wikimedia project.
- Low quality - The file is of an extremely low resolution, distorted, or has other physical image quality concerns.
- Copyright violation - The file might be used in violation of copyright.
| [edit] What not to list here I. For speedy deletion candidates, do not use this page; instead use {{db|reason}}. See the criteria for speedy deletion. These are: duplicates (where both files are on Wikipedia), thumbnails, broken files, non-existent files, non-commercial, "by permission" files and files which are not an image, sound file or video clip and have no encyclopedic use. II. Files that have no source, or have an unknown copyright, or are unused or replaceable non-free, or are non-free without rationale can be marked so that they will be deleted after a week, and should not be listed on this page. Add one of the following to the file page: - {{subst:nsd}} if a file has no source indicated
- {{subst:nld}} if a file has a source but no licensing information
- {{subst:orfud}} if a file has a non-free copyright tag but isn't used in any articles
- {{subst:rfu}} if a file has a non-free copyright tag but could be replaced by a free file
- {{subst:dfu|reason}} if a file has a non-free copyright tag but the rationale isn't sufficient or is disputed
- {{subst:frn}} if a file has no non-free use rationale
If the source or licensing information of an image marked as being freely licensed is disputed, please list the file on Possibly unfree files III. Redundant or duplicate files do not have to be listed here. Please use - {{isd|Full name of file excluding the "File:" prefix}} for speedy deletion if the other file is on Wikipedia, not on Commons
- {{subst:ncd|image name on Commons}} if the file now exists on Commons, or {{subst:ncd}} for files with the same name on Commons. (Don't nominate protected images, they are usually locally uploaded and protected since they are used in an interface message or in a highly used template, thus they are high-risk.)
IV. For blatant copyright infringements, use speedy deletion by tagging the file {{db-f9}} V. Suspected copyright violations shouldn't be listed here. - If a file is listed as public domain or under a free license, but lacks verification of this (either by an OTRS ticket number or a notice on the source website), tag it as {{subst:npd}}.
- For other suspected copyright infringements or licensing issues, use Wikipedia:Possibly unfree files.
VI. Files that are hosted on Wikimedia Commons cannot be deleted via this process. Please use the Commons deletion page instead. VII. If a file is appropriately licensed and could be usable elsewhere, consider copying it to the Wikimedia Commons instead of listing it for deletion. Once copied to the Commons, it is eligible for speedy deletion per criteria 8 for files. | Instructions for listing files for deletion To list a file: | 1 | Edit the file page. Add {{ffd|log=2009 December 2}} to the file page. | | 2 | Create its FfD subsection. Follow this edit link and list the file using {{subst:ffd2|File_name.ext|Uploader= |Reason= }} ~~~~ Leave the subject heading blank. If the file has been replaced by another file, name the file that replaced it in your reason for deletion. Refer below for a list of other common reasons. | | 3 | Give due notice. Inform the uploader by adding a message to their talk page using {{subst:fdw|File_name.ext}} -
- Remember to replace "File_name.ext" with the name of the image or media
- For multiple images by the same user, use {{subst:fdw-multi|First_file.ext|Second_file.ext|Third_file.ext}} ~~~~ (can handle up to 26)
If the image is in use, also consider adding {{ifdc|File_name.ext|log=2009 December 2}} to the caption(s), or adding a notice to the article talk pages. | State the reasons why the file should be deleted. Some common reasons are: - Obsolete - The file has been replaced by a better version. Indicate the new file name (often abbreviated OB)
- Orphan - The file is not used on any pages in Wikipedia. (If the file is only available under "fair use", please use {{subst:orfud}} instead). Please consider moving "good" free licensed files to Commons rather than outright deleting them, other projects may find a use for them even if we have none; you can also apply {{Copy to Wikimedia Commons}} . (often abbreviated OR, not to be confused with original research which generally doesn't apply to images)
- Unencyclopedic - The file doesn't seem likely to be useful in this encyclopedia. Images used on userpages should generally not be nominated on this basis alone unless the user is violating the Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not policy by using Wikipedia to host excessive amounts unencyclopedic material (most commonly private photos). (often abbreviated UE)
- Low quality - The image is of an extremely low resolution, distorted, or has other physical image quality concerns. (often abbreviated LQ)
- Copyright violation - The file might be used in violation of copyright. (often abbreviated CV)
These are not the only "valid" reasons to delete a file. Any properly explained reason can be used. The above list comprises the most common and uncontroversial ones. Since abbreviated deletion reasons will not be familiar to most Wikipedians, especially newbies, please consider using full words. A few extra keystrokes now can save paragraphs of explanation to a panicked uploader wondering what's wrong with their image. If you remove a file from an article, list the article from which you removed it so there can be community review of whether the file should be deleted. This is necessary because file pages do not remember the articles on which the file were previously used. | Administrator instructions To force the server to update this page immediately, purge the cache. [edit] Instructions for discussion participation In responding to the deletion nomination, consider adding your post in the format * '''View''' - Reasoning ... -- ~~~~ where "Delete", "Keep", "Comment", or something else may replace "View". In posting their reasoning, many editors use abbreviations and cite to the following: Remember that polling is not a substitute for discussion. Wikipedia's primary method of determining consensus is through editing and discussion, not voting. Although editors occasionally use straw polls in an attempt to test for consensus, polls or surveys sometimes impede rather than assist discussion. They should be used with caution, and are no more binding than any other consensus decision. [edit] Instructions for closing discussions Nominations should be processed for closing after being listed for 7 days following the steps at Deletion Process. [edit] Old discussions The following discussions are more than 7 days old and are pending processing by an administrator: | This page has a backlog that requires the attention of one or more administrators. - CV and UE - In this montage of the major places of the 2008 Mumbai attacks, none of the individual images themselves are cited, so thus we cannot determine if they are all free content or a copyright violation of being a derivative work. - Non-free image of actor who died recently. According to the article he played over 2,407 roles. Appears to be a widely photographed person and I cannot see that any effort has been expended to obtain a free image or get the copyright holder of an image to release it under a free image. As has been shown in a few recent cases (this month) - even after someone has died we can get a free image. Replaceable with a free alternative unless someone can show the negative results of a serious search for a free image Peripitus (Talk) 23:45, 28 November 2009 (UTC)
- Actually, I did search to find a free use image and was unable to find any. His 2,000-plus appearances were mostly in TV commercials, which are copyright protected. He is not a widely-recognized (or photographed) celebrity -- indeed, the New York Times obit notes that he was virtually anonymous despite his many roles. There are multiple images on Leighton's personal web site -- http://www.janleighton.com/index_new12_1024_p4.html . However, as the individual recently died, it not feasible to ask him for permission. There is another image at imdb -- http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0500353/ . There is no indication that any of these are non-free use. Where a notable public figure has deceased, and no free use image can be found, I had been under the impression that "fair use" of a single image in an Infobox was permitted. Has this changed? Cbl62 (talk) 00:24, 29 November 2009 (UTC)
- There is no consensus on that point. Some recent decisions and discussions here have resulted in some images deleted and others kept. At the bottom of his website is a note "Contact family of Jan Leighton at". While now may be an inappropriate time they have images and may release a free one. Just because someone has died does not mean free images cannot be created. There are many holders of images of him out there - they should be asked - Peripitus (Talk) 22:53, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

- The thing is, owning an object with an image on it does not mean you have license to reproduce that image. A photograph of a copyrighted picture, even on the side of something you own, is a derivative work of a copyrighted work and thus is subject to the same copyright. It would need to be in line with our Non-free content criteria to be used. I have no idea what "fan art" vs "official art" has to do with anything though, either way there is a copyright implied that is not likely compatible with our free content. - I'm honestly not sure about this, I am going to relate the entire story for clarification. This machine used to be here. It got old, half the buttons weren't working, and there were cigarette burns on the keypad. The local vending machine guy sold it to a friend of mine. This friend overhauled the machine, replacing the buttons and the screen, and sent they keypad off to an airbrush artist to do a custom paint job on it. Later, this friend needed some cash, and some extra space in his house because was soon going to be a father, so he sold the machine to me. Since he commissioned an original work of art, and then sold it, I figure that means it is mine. However since it is obviously based on characters and weapons from the game, uh, well, uh, crap I just don't know what it's fair use/copyright status might be. - non-free image to illustrate a concert tour article. I cannot see what this low-res shot of the guitarist and singer adds to the article. We have a free image of them in a later tour and this could be used to show what the group looks like. Image does not significantly add to reader's understanding (fails WP:NFCC#8) and I think we could, if needed, use the existing free image. Peripitus (Talk) 02:16, 30 November 2009 (UTC)
- There exists a tour image, but not of the Victory Tour, that was from the Universe Tour and a later date. Look at another tours articles, there exists free images of they but also are used fair use images (by example). --MisterWiki talking! :-D - 02:18, 30 November 2009 (UTC)

- There are already both free and non-free images of Horowitz in the article. The differences between him in the few photos is not of great significant. Either this image is adequately replaced by one of the free images (and so fails WP:NFCC#1) or it is redundant to one of the earlier non-free images (and so fails WP:NFCC#3a) Peripitus (Talk) 09:51, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

[edit] December 2 - File:Billy Ray Cyrus - Back to Tennessee music video.jpg (delete | talk | history | logs) - uploaded by Ipodnano05 (notify | contribs).
- non-free shot of Billy Ray Cyrus in a music video. There is nothing iconic about the image that is required for user understanding. If needed the image can be replaced with a free image of him (so it would fail WP:NFCC#1). The image does not significantly increase reader's understanding and so fails WP:NFCC#8 Peripitus (Talk) 05:29, 2 December 2009 (UTC)
- Keep Yes it does, it illustrates the music video section and how the music video actually looks. The text can only do so much. It is needed. Please don't delete it. Also, how would a free image add anything if it's not the music video? It wouldn't be the same. Every music video section should have an image. -- ipodnano05 * leave@message 05:31, 2 December 2009 (UTC)
- Delete and replace I believe a frame of a music video, in a section discussing the music video and in an article discussing the song, meets the fair use criteria. However, this particular image shows little more than Billy Ray's head- not much about the video. After watching the video, I suggest deleting this one and uploading one showing Cyrus and his truck or performing on stage. Liqudluck✽talk 06:14, 2 December 2009 (UTC)
