Requesting dispute resolution provides a central compilation of and an easy-access overview for Wikipedia:Dispute resolution (WP:DR), and details the various different methods used at each of the Wikipedia WP:DR requests pages.

This page is complete: All official DR submission gateways are accessible from this page, along with their complete instructions. For expediency, instructions are either in short form or else in a collapsed table that can be uncollapsed by clicking [show].

You can file a DR request directly from (not on) this page.

I.

Dispute resolution is hierarchical

For each step, prior steps must be tried, and you need to indicate such trials when you make a request.

II.

Be clear but brief

Be clear and descriptive so as to be understood, but also be brief so as to be read.

  • At the requests for comment level, a request of two paragraphs may be considered more than sufficent. At the arbitration level, more detail (limit 500 words) is required.
III.

Link

Include [[links]] and diffs, showing exactly where the conflict points are.

IV.

Official actors

Arbcom and Mediation have controlling member bodies who may make changes to requests: moving, collapsing, archiving, and (sometimes) deleting. Other DR request pages may be managed/mismanaged by certain people (see ANI to report such issues).

[edit] Negotiations

  • Choose any one of the below portals within this section.
  • Negotiations don't have to be in any order, but to proceed onto Mediation or Arbitration, one of these must have been attempted.
  • Note that Mediation Cabal is listed here, instead of being under formal mediation, in the below section.

Wikipedia:Talk page guidelines
  • Have you tried to deal with the other party/parties on the talk page(s) of the article(s) in conflict?
Wikipedia:Editor assistance

For best results when posting here:

Third opinion

Be sure to discuss the dispute on the talk page, and list here if only two editors are involved. Instructions:

  1. Only two editors involved
  2. Concise and neutral description of the disagreement
  3. Include a wikilink to the article's talk page with a "#section" link for the specific article talk page section in which the dispute is occurring.
  4. Sign with five tildes (~~~~~) to add the date without your name. This is important to maintain neutrality.
  5. Start your entry with a number sign/hash (#) directly below the previous entry.

Requests for comment
  1. This tool will only work if you are registered and you have a confirmed e-mail address registered via your Special:Preferences!
  2. Add just your username: Do not prefix it with "User:"
  3. List the page you're requesting for RFC discussion: Do not forget "Talk:" if you are posting to a talk page. (Only write the page title, not the full URL.)
  4. Choose an RFC category from a menu list: (11 selections, from Biographies to Wikipedia:Policies)
  5. Name of RFC: This is the name of the new discussion section that will be created
  6. Description: Keep it short and to the point. One paragraph only; you can elaborate once the RFC is posted.

Etiquette alerts

What WQA can do:

  • Intervene as a neutral third party to talk to editors who are engaging in incivility, or who might be new or unaware of Wiki policies
  • Provide neutral perspective on issues of incivility
  • Give guidance on where on Wikipedia to take a particular problem

What WQA CANNOT do:

  • Give or enforce blocks, bans, or binding disciplinary measures.
  • Intervene in content disputes, extreme personal attacks, vandalism or 3RR incidents
  • Mediate longterm, ongoing conflicts between two users

Mediation Cabal

The instructions are pretty intuitive and have been recently updated to a better design. If you want more discretion, you can email our coordinators or go to our #wikipedia-medcab IRC channel.

[edit] Arbitration

See here for instructions.

  • Purpose: You are trying to show the Arbitrators that there is a dispute requiring their intervention. You are not trying to prove your case in the request. If your case is accepted, an evidence and workshop pages will be created that you can use to provide more comment and detail.
  • Acceptance: After a request is made, the active Arbitrators will vote on whether to accept or decline the case: 0/0/0/0 corresponds to Arbitrators' votes to accept/reject/recuse/other
  • Do not: Open or close cases, move or remove any content or comments, run over 500 words (not including diffs), comment in another person's section (see guide..)
  • Required: Prerequsites, list of involved parties, brief report including links, diffs, and explanations
  • Prerequisites (two of the following, with exceptions): #Third opinion, #Requests for comment, #Mediation Cabal, #Mediation
  • Read: Arbitration guide
  • Questions:
