I wish to reproduce material on Wikipedia that has been previously published elsewhere and am in position to verify the license, either because I am the copyright holder or because I have permission from the copyright holder.

License can be verified either at the site of original publication, if online, or through e-mail. Detailed instructions for verifying can be found at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials, if you are the copyright holder, or Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission, if you are not.

If you choose to verify through email, send your verification for images to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. For text or other media to be used on English language Wikimedia projects, contact permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

That email must explicitly:

  1. Connect to the original publication. Your e-mail address or that of the individual whose permission you are conveying must be clearly connected to the original source.
  2. Identify the owner of the copyright material.
  3. Indicate what copyright license it is being released under. Whatever license you choose must allow material to be freely copied and modified by anyone (including third parties not affiliated with Wikipedia), for any purpose. This includes using it commercially. (See Licensing/Justifications for a detailed explanation of why.) We recommend using the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 license. For text, if you are the copyright owner, you must co-license under GNU Free Documentation license (unversioned, with no invariant sections, front-cover texts, or back-cover texts).
  4. Link to the uploaded media. If the media has already been uploaded, then include a link to the uploaded media.

We are sorry, but we cannot process emails offering us material without this information. In particular, we will refuse material coming with licensing statements such as "free use on Wikipedia". Bear in mind that we do not guarantee we will use the material so licensed.
