For help 'vanishing' from Wikipedia,
please see Right to vanish.
This page should not be confused with requests for checkuser or documentation about the renaming of articles.

This page hosts requests for username changes, which are carried out if deemed appropriate by bureaucrats. It is usually only possible to rename an account to a name which is not yet taken. Renaming is carried out in accordance with the username policy.

Please read the following notes and instructions carefully before making your request.

Bureaucrats will make the name changes, but other users (including Bots) help by "clerking" the mechanics of this process. If you wish to help as a clerk, please read the linked page carefully.

[edit] General notes

  • This page is for requests on the English Wikipedia only. To change your username on another Wikimedia project, please ask a bureaucrat on that project or make a request on Meta.
  • It is not possible for bureaucrats to merge two accounts, or to reattribute edits from IP addresses. Only registered accounts can be renamed.
  • As an alternative, please consider changing your signature. This will change your "public appearance" on talk pages and other places where you sign your username with ~~~~.
  • If you have not made very many edits, it might be more efficient to simply create a new username and discard the old one; disused accounts are harmless and may be safely ignored. This will also save you the trouble of submitting a request and waiting for it to be fulfilled. You can copy your old watchlist to your new account. In such a case, your edits from the old account will not be reattributed to the new account.
  • If you want your edits from your old account to be reattributed to your new account, do NOT create the new account first. Rather, request a name change here.
  • Account names requested here are regarded as being "reserved" until the request is accepted or rejected. If someone else registers the account while the request is here, it will be renamed if necessary to allow for the requested move.
  • We do not ordinarily change usernames because editors wish to retire from editing Wikipedia. We have {{retired}} for that. However, you may wish to read our Right to Vanish information.

[edit] Effects of a username change

  • When the request has been completed, your account will have been renamed. Your account preferences, watchlist contents, password, etc. will all be preserved, and your user and user talk pages will have been moved to the new name.
  • The process responsible for reallocating your old contributions may take some time. This is perfectly normal. Updates should take at most a day to complete, although it may take longer if you have a lot of edits and/or the "job queue" mechanism is very busy.
  • The change will appear in the user rename log and the request will be moved to the archives in the interest of transparency. It is not possible to rename accounts without an entry being created in the log.
  • This change will not affect signatures you have already left on talk pages, or other places where you signed your username with ~~~~. Those pages will continue to display your signature (including the link to your old username) unless edited manually.
  • Be aware: Once you have been renamed, your old account will no longer exist and may potentially be recreated by a third party. This is true even if your old account pages have been redirected towards your new account. To guard against impersonation, you may wish to recreate the old account yourself.
  • Note that username changes on the English Wikipedia do not affect your other accounts in your SUL. To reunify, each username you own must be renamed to the new name on their respective wikis, and then remerged with Special:MergeAccount.

[edit] Choosing an appropriate new name

  • First, take a look at the username policy to make sure the username you are requesting is appropriate.
  • Using your real name as a username may put you at risk for harassment. Your request to use your real name will be delayed unless you state explicitly that you are aware of the implications of using your real name.
  • Please note that for technical reasons, your username cannot begin with a lowercase letter, nor can it contain any underscores. However, you can change your signature to say whatever you like, within reason of course. You can also place a {{lowercase}} on your userpage, talk page, and subpages to make them display an initial lowercase letter.

[edit] Instructions

Once you have decided on the name you would like:

  1. Check to make sure this username is not already in use. Do this by searching for the name in this list. If the name appears in the list, even if the link is red, it is taken.
  2. Do not create an account under the new name or move your userpages. We'll do that for you.
  3. Log in with your present username in order to place your request. Renames will not be approved if the requester is not logged in.
  4. Click here to place a request.
    • Replace the text "CURRENT" with your present username.
    • Replace "NEW" with the username to which you wish to be renamed.
    • Replace "STATE A REASON HERE" with the reason you are requesting a change.
    • *Do not add anything in the "subject/headline" box.
    • If that doesn't work, simply copy the following text to your computer's clipboard:
     {{subst:Renameuser|CURRENT|NEW|3=Reason for requested renaming.}} ~~~~
Go to the "Requests" section of this page, click the "edit" link, and paste the text at the very bottom. Modify it as indicated above.
  5. Make sure that you have spelled both names correctly. Save the page.
  6. Check back periodically to answer any questions that may arise regarding your request. Please be patient. It may take a few days for your request to be completed.

Do not be surprised if you suddenly cannot log in to your old account; this merely indicates that you should log in under your new user name as the request has been fulfilled.

[edit] Current requests

[edit] judwa.nayaka → judwa.nayak

Symbol comment vote.svg Clerk note: As SoxBot told you, the target username exists, though it meets the criteria for usurpation. However, your account is too new to usurp another one. In order to ensure that usurped usernames be put to good use, we prefer only to grant requests from reasonably well-established users. Is there another name, not listed at Special:ListUsers, that you would prefer? @Kate (parlez) 17:27, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
Is it possible that Judwa.nayak is him too and he just forgot his password? Both names were registered on the same day, so it would be a pretty big coincidence if they were different people. -- Soap Talk/Contributions 21:17, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
  • Pictogram voting comment.svg Bureaucrat note: It'd be good if we could get this clarified. I wonder if a clerk could chase up the various accounts? --Dweller (talk) 10:04, 21 December 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Richard Isay → Psyche3458

Pictogram voting comment.svg Bureaucrat note: - the rename is technically possible and we take all privacy requests very seriously, but I do note that you have made a considerable number of edits to an article about yourself. Are you aware of editing within WP:COI? The Rambling Man (talk) 16:54, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
X mark.svgN Not done no response in a week. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:04, 26 December 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Rishko → YellowElm

Pictogram voting comment.svg Bureaucrat note: I see you were blocked last year for "image violations". You took a long break then came back, uploading images again. Can you confirm that you will be providing correct rationales for the images you upload and this rename is not simply an opportunity to avoid scrutiny as a once-blocked editor? The Rambling Man (talk) 17:00, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Kellymckean → KellyMcKean

[edit] NWSMG → NINER320

Pictogram voting comment.svg Bureaucrat note: Is that in all caps or not? You've indicated lowercase on your talk page. —Anonymous DissidentTalk 13:37, 25 December 2009 (UTC)

[edit] WTMx → WTM

Symbol comment vote.svg Clerk note: Moved from WP:CHU/U. –Juliancolton | Talk 22:44, 25 December 2009 (UTC)
  • Reason: I would prefer the requested username (WTM): I use this one also in some other projects. At first, I tried to create new account with the name that I prefer. It failed because the name "WTM" is too similar to the existing account: Wtm. --WTMx (talk) 01:11, 26 December 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Henderikjp → Henderik JP

Symbol comment vote.svg Clerk note: Moved from WP:CHU/U. Although this appears to be promotional. –Juliancolton | Talk 22:47, 25 December 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Jolo Buki Original → August Dominus

  • Symbol comment vote.svg Clerk note: Could you please state a reason? –Juliancolton | Talk 14:45, 26 December 2009 (UTC)
August Dominus is better: barely amount, new, no more difficult words, atractive, easy to remembering, an Croatian Wikipedia I change name, I will and in this...

Pictogram voting comment.svg Bureaucrat note: Your account has been blocked on two other Wikpedias. Is this rename an attempt to avoid scrutiny? The Rambling Man (talk) 20:07, 26 December 2009 (UTC)
No, I am on only two Wikipedias: Croatian and English, I abjure of other Wikipedias (German, French, Serbian, Serbo-Croatian). I had more names an Serbian Wikipedia, no advantage any.

[edit] Welsh Nationalism Foundation → Siluris

Pictogram voting comment.svg Bureaucrat note: How many people are using your account? Please see WP:NOSHARE. Accounts are for one individual only. Also see WP:COI. If you have a conflict of interest, it is best that you stay away from articles related to the group in question. —Anonymous DissidentTalk 02:35, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
  • In answer to Bureaucrat, only one person will use the new user-name to conform to your policy. Please advise if this is sufficient to make the change? If so, how is this activated and how will I be notified? On the COI issue, I fully understand and support the need to provide independent evidence for all statements entered and will endeavour to do this. In my defence, I'm new to this process. If I don't, I've no problem with you telling me again! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Welsh Nationalism Foundation (talkcontribs) 18:23, 27 December 2009 (UTC)
Symbol comment vote.svg Clerk note: I've taken the liberty of going out and checking the contributions of Welsh Nationalism Foundation (talk · contribs) in an attempt to check the COI concerns. I see no evidence of the user editing against COI guidelines, so I don't think this should be a major concern (however the editor is encouraged to keep those guidelines in mind while editing). --Shirik (talk) 20:22, 27 December 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Childcustodydivorcefamilylawyer → GlassLogic

  • Current name: Childcustodydivorcefamilylawyer (talk · contribs · logs · block log)
  • Requested name: GlassLogic (SUL reports: old & new) (rename user)
  • Reason: My user name change was approved by an administrator. I was not familiar with the username issues, and I chose a username that had to do with the subject matter I was interested, I found that was not a good idea since it implied that I might try to get business for myself relating to my username/posts, however, I am not trying to do that and have not linked or wrote about my own business in any regard. The artilce I started was verified with sources from court records posted to court web sites, and any links to different non-court/governmental external web sites were removed (previously those web sites were the only ones that had the documents linked to/sources, but since that time, court web sites have been located).
