- This page should not be confused with requests for checkuser or documentation about the renaming of articles.
This page hosts requests for username changes, which are carried out if deemed appropriate by bureaucrats. It is usually only possible to rename an account to a name which is not yet taken. Renaming is carried out in accordance with the username policy. Please read the following notes and instructions carefully before making your request. Bureaucrats will make the name changes, but other users (including Bots) help by "clerking" the mechanics of this process. If you wish to help as a clerk, please read the linked page carefully. [edit] General notes - This page is for requests on the English Wikipedia only. To change your username on another Wikimedia project, please ask a bureaucrat on that project or make a request on Meta.
- It is not possible for bureaucrats to merge two accounts, or to reattribute edits from IP addresses. Only registered accounts can be renamed.
- As an alternative, please consider changing your signature. This will change your "public appearance" on talk pages and other places where you sign your username with ~~~~.
- If you have not made very many edits, it might be more efficient to simply create a new username and discard the old one; disused accounts are harmless and may be safely ignored. This will also save you the trouble of submitting a request and waiting for it to be fulfilled. You can copy your old watchlist to your new account. In such a case, your edits from the old account will not be reattributed to the new account.
- If you want your edits from your old account to be reattributed to your new account, do NOT create the new account first. Rather, request a name change here.
- Account names requested here are regarded as being "reserved" until the request is accepted or rejected. If someone else registers the account while the request is here, it will be renamed if necessary to allow for the requested move.
- Please do not request a name change because you plan to retire from editing Wikipedia. We have {{retired}} for that.
[edit] Effects of a username change - When the request has been completed, your account will have been renamed. Your account preferences, watchlist contents, password, etc. will all be preserved, and your user and user talk pages will have been moved to the new name.
- The process responsible for reallocating your old contributions may take some time. This is perfectly normal. Updates should take at most a day to complete, although it may take longer if you have a lot of edits and/or the "job queue" mechanism is very busy.
- The change will appear in the user rename log and the request will be moved to the archives in the interest of transparency. It is not possible to rename accounts without an entry being created in the log.
- This change will not affect signatures you have already left on talk pages, or other places where you signed your username with ~~~~. Those pages will continue to display your signature (including the link to your old username) unless edited manually.
- Be aware: Once you have been renamed, your old account will no longer exist and may potentially be recreated by a third party. This is true even if your old account pages have been redirected towards your new account. To guard against impersonation, you may wish to recreate the old account yourself.
- Note that username changes on the English Wikipedia do not affect your other accounts in your SUL. To reunify, each username you own must be renamed to the new name on their respective wikis, and then remerged with Special:MergeAccount.
[edit] Choosing an appropriate new name - First, take a look at the username policy to make sure the username you are requesting is appropriate.
- Using your real name as a username may put you at risk for harassment. Your request to use your real name will be delayed unless you state explicitly that you are aware of the implications of using your real name.
- Please note that for technical reasons, your username cannot begin with a lowercase letter, nor can it contain any underscores. However, you can change your signature to say whatever you like, within reason of course. You can also place a {{lowercase}} on your userpage, talk page, and subpages to make them display an initial lowercase letter.
[edit] Instructions Once you have decided on the name you would like: - Check to make sure this username is not already in use. Do this by searching for the name in this list. If the name appears in the list, even if the link is red, it is taken.
- Do not create an account under the new name or move your userpages. We'll do that for you.
- Log in with your present username in order to place your request. Renames will not be approved if the requester is not logged in.
- Click here to place a request.
- Replace the text
"CURRENT" with your present username. - Replace
"NEW" with the username to which you wish to be renamed. - Replace
"STATE A REASON HERE" with the reason you are requesting a change. - *Do not add anything in the "subject/headline" box.
- If that doesn't work, simply copy the following text to your computer's clipboard:
-
-
{{subst:Renameuser|CURRENT|NEW|3=Reason for requested renaming.}} ~~~~ - Go to the "Requests" section of this page, click the "edit" link, and paste the text at the very bottom. Modify it as indicated above.
- Make sure that you have spelled both names correctly. Save the page.
- Check back periodically to answer any questions that may arise regarding your request. Please be patient. It may take a few days for your request to be completed.
Do not be surprised if you suddenly cannot log in to your old account; this merely indicates that you should log in under your new user name as the request has been fulfilled. Archives: See: Wikipedia:Changing username/Archives
[edit] Current requests [edit] M. James Roth → M.james.roth M. James Roth (talk) 02:29, 14 November 2009 (UTC) Bureaucrat note: The requested username is the same as your current name, aside from the first letter being in lowercase. Due to technical limitations, usernames must start with an uppercase letter. However, you may use the template {{lowercase}} on your user and user talk pages, and change your signature to reflect your preference. MBisanz talk 02:32, 14 November 2009 (UTC) -
Clerk note: Actually, he wants the "j" and "r" decapitalized, which is acceptable and possible. –Juliancolton | Talk 03:29, 14 November 2009 (UTC) -
- No, he wants the M, J and R decap'd. MBisanz talk 05:33, 14 November 2009 (UTC)
-
- The name still is not the same because he's not asking for just the M to be decapitalized. I agree with Juliancolton. -Jeremy (v^_^v Stop... at a WHAMMY!!) 23:47, 14 November 2009 (UTC)
Bureaucrat note: Can the user please confirm if you would be happy with an uppercase first letter, but lowercase j and r? We dislike performing multiple name changes for the same user, which is why MBisanz is being so careful not to just perform a change that you may still be unhappy with. --Dweller (talk) 12:30, 16 November 2009 (UTC) Bureaucrat note: Has this (or something else) been done? I can't see any edits for the old username? --Dweller (talk) 14:08, 23 November 2009 (UTC) - MBisanz seems to have renamed "M. James Roth" to "M.JamesRoth"[1] which is probably why no edits show up at the username listed above as "current". Regards SoWhy 14:57, 23 November 2009 (UTC)
- I've fixed the request - it was missing a space, so the link to the contribs should be OK now. It would appear that the user created User:M. James Roth and had it renamed to User:M.JamesRoth (spaces removed). They then mistakenly recreated the old username, by logging into the SUL account, and have used that to place another request. It seems the user is not bothering to use either account any more, so perhaps this should just be closed not done. AJCham 14:59, 23 November 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Nshunsuke → NShunsuke - Current name: Nshunsuke (talk · contribs · logs · block log)
- Requested name: NShunsuke (SUL reports: old & new) (rename user)
- Reason: I have the username NShunsuke in the Japanese Wikipedia and I want to use the unified login, and it is also confusing to use different usernames in different languages, so I'm thinking of unifying the usernames. Nshunsuke (talk) 14:26, 14 November 2009 (UTC)

I'm inclined to just do the usurp now.
