Western High School is a secondary school located in Davie, Florida serving students in grades 9 through 12. The school is a part of the Broward County Public Schools district. The principal is Scott Fiske. The school's mascot is the Wildcat and the official colors are Black and Vegas Gold. Western High has an FCAT school grade of "C" for the 2008-2009 academic year.[1]
[edit] Enrollment InformationAs of the 2009-2010 school year, 3095 students are enrolled in Western High School. The ethnic breakdown is as follows: 57% White, 33% Hispanic, 5% Black, 3% Asian or Pacific Islander, and 2% Multiracial. [1] [edit] DebateOne of Western High's most productive clubs is its Debate team. Coached by Nancy Dean, the team has won multiple awards at the local and national level. These tournaments include, Blue Key Speech and Debate Tournament, Titan Invitational, Harvard Debate Tournament, Emory Debate Tournament, Sunvintational, Crestian Debate Tournament, Flying L debate tournament, FFl Qualifier, Florida State tournament, the National Debate Tournament, and many more. In the 2009-2010 year, the Western High Debate team ranked, 4th in the Florida Manatee district, and 44th nationwide. The Western High Debate Team competes in the following categories, Public Forum Debate, Student Congress, Extemperanous (International and Domestic), Oratory, Humorous Interpretation, Dramatic Interpretation, Duo Humorous Interpretation and Oral Interpretation. [edit] AthleticsThe school offers athletics in Football, Basketball, Tennis, Soccer, Colorguard, Swimming, Water Polo, Golf, Wrestling, Baseball, Softball, Track & Field, Cross Country, Marching Band, and Volleyball. They also have an Army JROTC program and academic clubs such as NHS and Debate. The unit has maintained Honor Unit with Distinction, the highest unit award in Cadet Command, since its existence. [edit] Fine Arts department[edit] BandThe "Pride of the Wildcats" band program offers concert band, marching band, jazz band, dance, and for the first time in 2008, an indoor percussion program. The band director is Johnnie A. Tracey. Former directors include Brian Wesolowski, Ingrid Larragoity, and John K. Southall. The Western High School marching band is classified an AA band. Their show for 2009 was The Escape written by percussion instructor Eric Levy. The band placed 4th in State Championships. [edit] ChorusThe chorus program offers two levels of vocal ensembles. Program members have participated in the Candlelight Processional at Walt Disney World for several years. They have also performed at the Southern Star Music Festival, and, in 2006, at Carnegie Hall in New York City. [edit] DramaThe international award winning[citation needed] drama program participates in the International Thespian Society as Thespian Troupe 4259. Past shows include Crimes of the Heart (Fall 2006), Gypsy (Spring 2007), Metamorphoses (Fall 2007), Beauty and the Beast (Spring 2008), The Secret Garden (Fall 2008), and The Laramie Project (Fall 2008). Troupe 4259 has won several awards[which?] and has performed at the Florida Thespian State Festival and received Superior ratings, the highest level awarded. They also received Critics Choice for the ensemble musical performance of "The Internet is for Porn", from the show Avenue Q. The current director is Daniel Bonnett, who has starred in shows such as A Christmas Carol and Jungle Book. [edit] References
