West Ryde railway station is a railway station in West Ryde on the Northern line of the CityRail network. It serves a well established commercial and residential area, and crosses busy Victoria Road which carries many bus routes.
[edit] HistoryThe station was opened as Ryde station on 17 September 1886. Ryde station's name was changed to West Ryde on 8 October 1945.[1] [edit] Platforms/ServiceThe station is served by two trains per hour for most of the time, with additional trains at peak hours. All trains that serve the station during off-peak hours stop at all stations to the City or to Hornsby . All Northern line services stop at West Ryde.. Under the new October 2009 CityRail timetable, most Newcastle and Central Coast services will stop at West Ryde.
[edit] Infrastructure and serviceIt has three tracks widening to four on the outbound side of the station. On the inbound side of the station the three tracks merge into two. The tracks are paired by direction, meaning the island platform is dedicated to city bound trains while outbound trains leave from the single side platform. The station is generally served by two trains per hour, with additional trains at peak hours. A small number of long distance interurban trains also stop at West Ryde. West Ryde has Easy Access for wheelchairs, the street level platforms being connected to an overhead booking office by stairs and lifts. It is the closest station to the Sydney Live Steam Locomotive Society[1] miniature railway. Stand D serves NightRide buses after midnight. [edit] Lachlan Valley RailwayDuring the 1980s, West Ryde was the site of the Sydney Depot for the Lachlan Valley Railway, a rail preservation society. The station used to have a small goods yard servicing a freight shed (now 'Active Hire') and a siding running up to the West Ryde Pumping station.
