"West End Blues" is a multi-strain 12 bar blues composition by Jazz cornetist Joe "King" Oliver. The song is commonly performed as an instrumental, although the song also features lyrics writen by Clarence Williams. West End refers to a historic resort area in New Orleans on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain, once famous for its restaurants, dance halls, and live Jazz. King Oliver first recorded West End Blues for Brunswick Records on June 11, 1928.[1] An early vocal version was recorded by Ethel Waters. Louis Armstrong recorded West End Blues in 1928 with Earl Hines on piano and Zutty Singleton on drums. The Louis Armstrong recording was inducted into Grammy Hall of Fame in 1974. [edit] Sources
