List of stations Underground · National Rail

Warren Street tube station is a London Underground station. It is on the Charing Cross branch of the Northern Line, between Goodge Street and Euston, and the Victoria Line between Oxford Circus and Euston. It is in Travelcard Zone 1 and is the nearest tube station to University College Hospital, being opposite the newly opened main building. It is also very close to Euston Square tube station on the Circle, Hammersmith and City and Metropolitan lines.

[edit] History

The station opened as part of the original Charing Cross, Euston & Hampstead Railway on June 22, 1907 under the name "Euston Road", and this name can still be seen in the Northern Line platform tiling. The station's name changed to "Warren Street" the following year. The current station building replaced the original when escalators were installed. The Victoria Line platforms opened on December 1, 1968. The Northern Line northbound platform of the station was used for location filming in the movie Death Line (1972)

[edit] Structure

The station is on 4 main levels. The surface level opens out on to the street with two separate entrances. The ticket office is at this level. There are 3 escalators to take you down to the intermediate level. At this level you have the choice of going to the Northern Line or the Victoria line. There are two escalators down to the Northern Line and two slightly longer escalators down to the Victoria Line. From the bottom of the Northern line escalators you have to go down steps to reach the Northern Line platforms. The Victoria Line platforms are at grade with the bottom of the escalators.

One odd thing about the Victoria line at this station is that it operates right hand operation - just like the platforms at the adjacent Euston. Euston has right hand running to make interchange with the Northern Line easier. Warren Street also has right hand running because of its proximity to Euston.

In the short passageway on the intermediate level you can see evidence of one of the shafts used to build the Victoria Line. The shaft is also visible from the platforms of the Victoria Line. There is no evidence at surface level of where this shaft was dug.

Prior to installation of escalators the station operated with lifts. At the bottom of the Northern Line escalators there is a closed off passage that would have originally held the lifts. The main escalators from the surface cut through the lift shaft so nothing is visible higher up.

The station is currently undergoing refurbishment (as of summer 2008).
