WNBW (TV):
- For the former WNBW in Washington, D.C., see WRC-TV.
WNBW is the future NBC-affiliated television station for Gainesville, Florida. To be owned by MPS Media, the station will be operated by New Age Media under a joint sales agreement (JSA). This will make it a sister station to CBS affiliate WGFL and low-powered MyNetworkTV affiliate WMYG-LP. Broadcasting on digital channel 9, its transmitter will be located in Newberry. WNBW will share studios with its sister stations on Northwest 80th Boulevard in Gainesville along I-75. The station also has a construction permit for broadcasting an analog channel 29. However, it is unlikely that this signal will be activated before the analog shutdown on February 17, 2009. [1] It is anticipated that WNBW will be offered on Cox and Communicomm cable systems within the Gainesville area. There is a possibility that the station will be offered on a new WGFL digial subchannel.
[edit] History
In June of 2008, WGFL announced that it would be launching a new digital-only television station on September 8. Originally known since 1996 by its construction permit number, 960920WR, the station received the WNBW calls on August 18. WNBW's signal was activated for testing on September 4.[2] New Age Media hopes to launch the station on January 1, 2009. [1] On that date, WNBW will begin regular programming as well as bring local NBC service back to Gainesville since WCJB switched its affiliation from NBC to ABC in 1973. WNBW has been confirmed as becoming the NBC affiliate for Gainesville (hence the meaning of the call letters). [1] The new station will hold rights to enforce black outs on out-of-market stations carrying NBC and syndicated programming, including WESH (the NBC affiliate for Orlando), which also serves Gainesville as the de-facto affiliate for the market. [3] WNBW has also indicated that it will eventually air some local programming including newscasts by the end of 2009. [1] [4]
