"Vivo per lei (je vis pour elle)" (English: I live for her) is the name of a 1996 song recorded as a duet by Italian artist Andrea Bocelli and French singer Hélène Ségara. It was the fifth single from Ségara's first studio album, Cœur de verre. Released in December 1997, the song was a smash hit in Belgium (Wallonia) and France where it reached #1 on the charts.

[edit] Song information

"Vivo per lei (je vis pour elle)" is a tribute to the music; that is what is referred in the title to "lei" in Italian-language, and "elle" in French-language. This multilingual song mixes lyrics in French, sung by Ségara, and Italian, by Bocelli (and Ségara in the refrain).

The song's piano melody resembles an Elton John composition.[1]

During Ségara's first tour, the song was performed, but Bocelli was replaced by Bruno Pelletier. This version is available on the live album En concert à l'Olympia, as second track on the second CD. It was also included on Ségara's compilation Le Best of and on Bocelli's album Romanza, but in duet with Giorgia.

The song is currently used in a French TV advert for pastas. Only Bocelli's voice can be heard in the excerpt played.

Actually this song was written by Mario Manzani (Music) and Giliath (lyrics) and performed by the group called O.R.O. (Manzani – Mengalli – Zelli) in 1995. The song won the “Disco per l’estate” edition of that year, but it had no particular achievement. During the same year, the lyrics of the song was rewritten by Gatto Panceri and it was relaunched thanks to the duet between Andrea Bocelli and Giorgia. The new lyrics are characterized by the fact that “lei” of the title is actually music, whereas the original was a love song for a girl.[citation needed]

[edit] Chart performances

In France, the song went straight to #9 on December 6, 1997, and reached #1 four weeks later, thus becoming the sixth bilingual number-one singles in France. It topped the chart for five consecutive weeks, then dropped slowly, remaining for 22 weeks in the top ten, 33 weeks in the top 50 and 42 weeks in the top 100.[2] It was certified Platinum by the SNEP[3] and featured at #6 on the 1998 End of the Year Chart.[4] It is the 141th best-selling single of all time in France.[5]

In Belgium (Wallonia), the single debuted at #18 on December 20, entered the top ten two weeks later and achieved #1 in its sixth weeks. As in France, it stayed there for five weeks, then dropped rather slowly. It fell off the top ten after 15 weeks and the top 40 after 28 weeks.[6] It was ranked #4 on the 1997 Annual Chart.[7]

To date, it is the best-selling single for Ségara, and the second for Bocelli (the first is "Con te partirò").
