[edit] Child Star Years (1963-1969)

Vilma Santos started her acting career when one of his uncles, who was a cameraman at Sampaguita Pictures, convinced her to try out for the movies. Initially, Sampaguita Pictures slotted her for a child star role in Anak, Ang Iyong Ina (1969) opposite dramatic greats Lolita Rodriguez and Gloria Romero. When Vilma was in the studio, she noticed a long line of girls, which she decided to join. The long line turned out to be for an audition for Sampaguita Pictures' next offering Trudis Liit (Little Trudis). When it was her turn to audition, she was asked by the panel to sing, dance and cry on cue, which she was able to accomplish with flying colors. She was paired with child star Connie Angeles and ably supported by Sampaguita Pictures' resident contravida Bella Flores. During the next year's FAMAS Awards derby for the films of 1963, she became the recipient of the Best Child Performer award for Trudis Liit, the first child actress to receive such honor from the prestigious award-giving body that was equated with the Oscars.

The FAMAS win boosted her chances to stardom, and as her talent was apparent, she was pitted in dramatic films as a daughter to various Sampaguita stars such as Gloria Romero, Rita Gomez, Lolita Rodriguez, Marlene Dauden, Luis Gonzales, among others in box-office hits such as Sa Bawat Pintig ng Puso (1964), Maria Cecilia (1965), Kasalanan Kaya? (1968) and played Imee Marcos in the films Iginuhit ng Tadhana (1965) and its sequel Pinagbuklod ng Langit (1969). During this time, Vilma started building her fanbase and popularity with provincial tours on movie publicity runs, eventually building one of the most successful and solid fanbases in Philippine history, the Vilmanians, who, with their rival Noranians (fans of archrival Nora Aunor), would bring about arguably the most heated rivalry in Philippine showbusiness. In addition, the FAMAS has also recognized her acting prowess with nominations for Supporting Actress for the films Maria Cecilia (1965) and Kasalanan Kaya? (1968).

[edit] Political career

In 1998, she entered politics and ran for mayor of Lipa City, Batangas where she won by landslide victories in three consecutive elections. As the first woman mayor of Lipa City, she helped bring not just economic progress and infrastructure development to Lipa City, but more notably her various programs on public health, education and environment, which again earned various local and international awards and recognitions.

In 2005, the University of the Philippines conferred to her the Gawad Plaridel Award for her achievements and contributions both as an actress and a public servant. In the same year she was conferred an honorary doctorate degree (honoris causa) in humanities by the Lipa City College. She was again honored in 2006 by the University of the Philippines as one of the four awardees in UP's First Diwata Awards.

Governor Vilma Santos is married to Senator Ralph Recto, who belongs to a well-known political clan in the Philippines. Together they have a son, Ryan Christian. She is also mother to actor/model/television host Luis 'Lucky' Manzano, from previous marriage to actor Edu Manzano.

[edit] Governor-elect

Santos-Recto was proclaimed as the Governor-elect of the province of Batangas on May 21, 2007 after garnering 475,740 votes against Sanchez's 344,969 for a winning margin of more than 130,000. She is the first female governor of the province of Batangas.
