The left-handed Amaya's career high ranking was World No. 15, which he attained in June, 1980. Amaya nearly beat tennis legend Björn Borg in the first round of the 1978 Wimbledon Championships. With his 135 mph lefty serve he had Borg down 2 sets to 1 before losing 9–8, 1–6, 6–1, 3–6, 3–6. Amaya also won the 1980 French Open doubles title with partner Hank Pfister.
