Vasco da Gama is a South African football (soccer) team based in Parow, Cape Town that currently competes in the National First Division. Coming from the lower ranks, the club has its roots entrenched in the local Capetonian Portuguese community. The club is named after Brazilian club CR Vasco da Gama.
[edit] HistoryVasco were established in 1980. At the end of the 2003 season they won promotion to the National First Division, after being crowned champions of the Vodacom Second Division. In their first season of first division football they finished 5th, giving themselves the opportunity to build on their previous league performances. After a successful 2005/2006 season, Vasco featured in the playoffs for the PSL, beating Bush Bucks in in the semi-final. They lost 1-0 in the playoff finals to a Benoni Premier United team, which included Bafana Bafana stars Bernard Parker and Tsepo Masilela. In 2008 they won the National Vodacom League and regained promotion into the National First Division once again. [edit] Notable former players
[edit] 2008/2009 seasonVasco won promotion into the National First Division at the end of the 2007/2008 season after beating Carara Kicks 3-0 in the Vodacom League Playoff Final. Coach Carlos das Neves kept the core of the team the same, although he did strengthen the midfield heavily, bringing in players such as Christian Moudouthe-Bille (formerly of Mamelodi Sundowns FC and Black Leopards) and Jonothan Armogam. Vasco had a modest season, with some surprise results such as beating Carara Kicks; the eventual Coastal Stream winners. They settled for a 6th place finish seeing Durban Stars get relegated.
