VMware Server (formerly VMware GSX Server) is an entry-level server virtualization software suite from VMware, Inc., a subsidiary of EMC Corporation. VMware Server can create, edit, and play virtual machines. It uses a client-server model, allowing remote access to virtual machines, at the cost of some graphical performance (and 3D support). In addition to the ability to run virtual machines created by other VMware products, it can also run virtual machines created by Microsoft Virtual PC. VMware, Inc. makes Server freely available in the hope that users will eventually upgrade to VMware ESX. Users of VMware Server's internal utilities can preserve (and revert to) a single snapshot copy of each separate virtual machine within their VMware Server environment. The product does not have a specific interface for cloning virtual machines, unlike VMware Workstation. Unlike Microsoft Hyper-V, VMWare does allow VM memory to be over-committed.[2][not in citation given]
[edit] Versions[edit] VMware Server 1.0VMware released version 1.0 of Server on July 12, 2006. VMware Server continues the retired VMware GSX Server product-line. Vmware Server 1.0.x series is still supported .It's latest maintenance release is 1.0.10 and was released on 26 October 2009 . [edit] VMware Server 2.0VMware Server 2 uses a web user interface , instead of GUI . For web interfaces, VMware server 2 and VMware vCenter 4 are based on Tomcat 6 web server, while VMware vCenter 2.5 is based on Tomcat 2.5. Tomcat6 service is reported to use memory higher than virtual server itself [3] and higher than tomcat5 [4]. Tomcat6 memory can be limited by adding the following switch to service:[5] --JvmMx Maximum memory pool size in MB Microsoft Virtual Server also uses a web user interface, but is based on IIS. VMware server 2 supports Microsoft Shadow copy. Microsoft virtual server 2005 R2 SP1 also supports Shadow copy. By supporting this service, Virtual machine can be backed up without stopping , usually called live backup. [edit] See also
