[edit] HistoryVIT University, was founded in 1984 as a self-financing institution originally called the Vellore Engineering College. The Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, conferred the deemed university status on Vellore Engineering College in 2001 under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act, 1956. The University is headed by its founder and Chancellor, G. Viswanathan, who was a former parliamentarian and minister in the Tamil Nadu State Government. [edit] RankingThe University has been ranked at number 10 on the top 15 engineering universities in India by a study conducted by the Times of India.[1] [edit] Academia and research[edit] AdmissionsThe university follows an entrance exam based system of admission. A yearly entrance exam, VITEE, is conducted around the month of April. The admissions from this exam are decided based on merit. Similarly, another entrance exam, VITMEE, is conducted for admissions to the Masters' programs. For entrance into Business Management programmes, the results of the Nation-wide Common Aptitude Test (CAT) and other equivalent tests are considered.[2] [edit] Degrees offeredThe university offers 15 Undergraduate and 31 Postgraduate coursework programmes in addition to full-time/part-time research degrees in the form of Ph.D., M.S. (by research) degrees under the Engineering and Management disciplines, and Ph.D., M.Phil. in Sciences and Languages.[3] [edit] ResearchCurrently VIT University is said to have secured sponsors for scientific projects worth around 100 million INR. The University also provides consultancy services to the Defence Research Development Laboratory to the tune of more than 2.2 million INR.[4] [edit] Academic organisation and accreditationVIT university has consolidated different disciplines into six Schools of Excellence to enable what the management calls a synergy in the teaching and learning process and the faculty are able to specialise in particular streams based on their interests. Research centers are also part of the schools, in order to encourage collaboration amongst the research and coursework areas and seek to provide opportunity for coursework students to participate in research projects.[3] VIT University is the first university to get international accreditation for its programmes. The University's programmes are recognised by a range of accreditation boards including, but not limited to, NAAC, NAB, AICTE, IET and the Energy Institute.[5] [edit] CampusThe VIT University is located on a sprawling campus located just off the Katpadi–Ranipet state highway. The campus is divided in two by the Chennai–Bangalore railway line running through it. The campus is a judicious mix of building complexes and large open green areas. The entire academic portion of the campus and the Women's hostels are located to the south of the railway tracks while the northern portion is occupied by the Men's hostels and the University stadium. The southern side of the campus also houses four major auditoria and two major food service areas. The University has a large number of sporting facilities, including an athletic track and field stadium, basket ball courts, tennis courts, two swimming pools — one of which is olympic sized — and a football ground. The campus also has a set of smart classrooms which are used to provide digitally integrated education. The entire campus has been made a WiFi zone to enable students to access the internet.[6] [edit] Residential collegesThe southern side of the campus houses six building complexes, that are designated Women's hostels, and two Men's hostel complexes. The northern section of the campus houses ten building complexes that form the Men's hostels. [edit] External links
