Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. The following links will help you begin editing on Wikipedia:
Please bear these points in mind while editing Wikipedia:
- Please respect others' copyrights; do not copy and paste the contents from webpages directly.
- Please use a neutral point of view when editing articles; this is possibly the most important Wikipedia policy.
- If you are testing, please use the Sandbox to do so.
- Do not add unreasonable contents into any articles, such as: copyrighted text, advertisement messages, and text that is not related to an article's subject. Adding such unreasonable information or otherwise editing articles maliciously is considered vandalism, and will result in your account being blocked.

Thank you for the welcome, Kf4bdy. --MyPOV
The creator of the article I deleted under CSD A8 was created by User:ChantalPerrichon, who I notified on their talk page of this deletion. Your subsequent recreation of LIP6 was deleted (and then undeleted, admitting the deletion was in error) by RasputinAXP. Please ensure you've got all the relevant facts to hand in future. Regards, Proto||type 18:06, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
- The article was a clear copyright violation. LIP6's website indicates that all content is copyright, and is not freely available to plunder. The fact a new user chose to create an account in that name is not indicative of copyright being waived. Wikipedia has to be exceedingly careful with copyright issues. If I came across such another blatant copyvio, I would do the exact same thing. Proto||type 00:35, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
-
- The fact that I notified the creator 18 minutes after I began to delete the twenty or so copyrighted images they uploaded, rather than before, is indeed a (minor) failure on my part to fully adhere to the exact letter of the precise law. I apologise if this offended you. I'm unsure as to what action you would like me to take at this point - or are you satisfied with just castigating me? Proto||type 07:34, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
Sorry, but no. A minor procedural error is not going to make me or any other admin knowingly restore material that is copyrighted. In addition, even if I was willing to contravene all good sense and do so, image deletions can not be reversed. I do thank you for your speedy and well-thought-out responses, however, and will endeavour to stick exactly to the prior notice rule in future. Regards, Proto||type 08:07, 27 May 2006 (UTC)
- If you feel that mediation is required over this, then be my guest. I would ask that you hold off until June 5th, as (and you may be able to tell from my lack of contributions) I have limited net access at the moment. The user who created the copyvio page clearly knew wiki mark up text, was therefore not new, and should have been smart enough not to commit such flagrant copyright violation. Proto||type 18:53, 27 May 2006 (UTC)
-
- Sorry, but I don't care whether it was taken from the website of a commercial content provider, or, as is the case, not. The deletion was the correct call, even if not strictly within policy. You're free to copy the page and the copyrighted images again, from the french Wiki, or from LIP6's website, but I won't do it for you. The article then would go through the full deletion procedure. - Hi MyPOV. Please note the following Deletion Review link: [[1]], which indicates Wikipedia peers believe continuing with your shorter, non-copyright-violating rewritten version is the correct way to proceed. If, however, you still wish to make a big fuss about the situation, that's your decision. I'm going to go create some articles. Please let me know via my talkpage if you choose to request further input on this issue. Thanks. Proto||type 10:00, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Bordeaux1.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. [edit] Orphaned non-free media (Image:UTC logo.jpg)
Thanks for uploading Image:UTC logo.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 08:17, 18 August 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Disputed fair use rationale for Image:University of Avignon logo.gif
Thanks for uploading Image:University of Avignon logo.gif. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 20:43, 23 October 2007 (UTC)
Hi, and welcome to WikiProject Universities! Our goals are to standardize the structure and content of all college and university articles, improve Wikipedia's coverage of these articles (hopefully propelling them to featured article status), and serve as the central resource for all discussions and information related to colleges and universities on Wikipedia.
A few features that you might find helpful:
If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask one of the project participants or post a question on the talk page. We'll be happy to help you. Again, welcome! We look forward to seeing you around! Noetic Sage 01:06, 24 October 2007 (UTC)
[edit] University guideslines - thoughts sought
I was wondering if you could offer your thoughts on the proposed Wikipedia:WikiProject Universities/Article guidelines, given your work on the French universities, especially on naming conventions for both systems and institutions in non English speaking countries. Timrollpickering 16:27, 27 October 2007 (UTC)
-
- Sure, I'd be delighted to! But I don't quite feel ready for prime time on this. I'd like first to consolidate my naming rationale for the ninety French universities that I've been looking at. To this end, I've been writing up a set of guidelines, with references to relevant Wikipedia conventions. I'll be sure to take into consideration and cite the guidelines that you point out. WikiProject Newsletter n°1
Bonjour and welcome to the first WikiProject France newsletter!! It should become a monthly special of our project, but until the next issue, here are some points to consider for the month:
It doesn't seem like a lot, so I hope we will still have enough problems for nexts months issue. Salut till the next issue, ChrisDHDR (17:18, 10 November 2007 (UTC)).
[edit] RE: List of public universities in France by academy
I don't know, the page just seems a bit disorganised. ChrisDHDR 19:45, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
- This is what I meant. Now that I've done it though, I've taken the tag away. Thanks for nudging me to do it rather than to leave it to someone else! ChrisDHDR 10:11, 1 December 2007 (UTC)
- I removed the external links since they are already on each university's page and the point of a list is to give links to related articles and not to their websites. Plus, the article is not called List of external links to public universities in France by academy ;-). ChrisDHDR 15:16, 1 December 2007 (UTC)
- Ja, I get your point on the article/template comparasion. I've reverted it but since you've edited it since my last edit, could you please redo your modifications. ChrisDHDR 15:45, 1 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Public universities
Hi, I see that you have been editing almost all articles on French Universities because they "are not public universities". I don't know where you got this idea, but this is completely wrong. All ENS and almost all (perhaps even all) universities in France are public institutions. Please revert your edits. Thanks. --Crusio (talk) 08:35, 30 January 2009 (UTC)
- My reply on your talk page. Or please see below. -- MyPOV (talk) 15:36, 30 January 2009 (UTC)
Hi, I do not agree either on the action you did on French public universities today. Please refer to Établissement public à caractère scientifique, culturel et professionnel and revert to the full list. Prof-en-g.... (talk) 14:59, 30 January 2009 (UTC)
- Hello, you do not have a talk page, so I am replying here. I am simply undoing edits by a user (total activity of perhaps one day), who classified non-universities as public universities. A public university is a well-defined entity in France. There are eighty-one of them, and I created and labeled many of the university articles myself, so I have no disagreement with labeling every bona fide public university as such. There are also several other categories of public institution of higher education and research in France. Each has its page. There's a page for grandes écoles, for instance. The institutes of technology have their page. By all means, please go ahead and create templates for these categories as well. -- MyPOV (talk) 15:24, 30 January 2009 (UTC)
-
- Further discussion on improving the scope of Template:Public Universities in France
-
- I agree that there are eighty-one French "universités", as stated above by User:MyPOV. So that MyPOV's view that Template:Public Universities in France should contain only the list of these 81 universities is somehow acceptable.
- BUT I still would like to highlight that this creates issues, for discussion hereafter.
- There are alternative (larger) lists of French university-grade higher education institutes that could be used as the improved list of Public Universities in France, as being similar in nature to equivalent lists of Universities in other countries (see below).
-
- -Établissement public à caractère scientifique, culturel et professionnel (EPCSP): I appreciate the new page translated yesterday by User:Prof-en-g.... related to Établissement public à caractère scientifique, culturel et professionnel (EPCSP). Two days ago, I tried to make this EPCSP list the actual list contained in Template:Public Universities in France, and this was withdrawn by User:MyPOV, as it includes more institutions than just the 81 universities. I note the above statement by User:Crusio related to ENS, which is actually part of the the list of EPCSP institutions.
- - Pôle de recherche et d'enseignement supérieur (PRES) : a reader could be surprised to note that University of Bordeaux (or more obvious fr:Université Paris-Est) is not part of the list of 81 universities, as it is a PRES. To make it short, a French PRES structure might in some cases be not too different from a Collegiate university. This is at odds with the fact that University of Cambridge is part of the list in Template:Universities in the United Kingdom, while University of Bordeaux is not in the France list.
- - In the French systems, there are also other public institutes with the word "université" in their name but that are not listed among the 81 universities. Examples include Université de technologie de Compiègne and two others French universities of technologies. I do not resist also mentioning fr:Université de tous les savoirs which is a totally different (virtual) entity in France.
- - In the French system, there are a number of institutions that are organised like a university but that are not with université in their name. The best example is Collège de France, which is an EPCSP-Grand établissement, similar as the case for Grenoble Institute of Technology.
-
- Hence, I recommend the community to select the best alternative for the contents of Template:Public Universities in France
- - either keep the reduced list of 81 French universities, as proposed by User:MyPOV, which has been the consensus sofar, but keeping the open issues mentionned above
- - or keep the reduced list of 81 French universities, but also mention the related PRES when applicable
- - and/or select a larger list of French university-grade high education institutes, such as the EPCSP list, which I proposed two days ago and was withdrawn by User:MyPOV. This would meet most objections and issues mentionned above, including the ENS issue mentionned by User:Crusio, and the issue of the technical universities mentionned above by me.
-
- Note also that List of colleges and universities in France is not limited to the 81 universities.
-
- I personally do not mind on whichever consensus pops up, but I vote in favour of the EPCSP list as the most appropriate embodiment of 'Public Universities and university-grade higher education institutes in France', that I feel as the better list in comparison of the contents of equivalent lists from other countries => Should this be agreed as a consensus for an improved version of the template, then you just need to revert to the following version Template:Public_Universities_in_France 15:19, 26 January 2009 and make it back as the current version of the template.
-
- Sorry for being so long ! Hope it helps.
- Cabotin (talk) 01:37, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
-
-
- No need to apologize. Indeed, thank you for your thoughtful discussion of the issues.
-
-
- Here is how I see it: What constitutes a public university is very well defined in France. When the Ministry of Education produces its statistical reports on public universities, it reports on these 81 institutions. When the Minister of Education announces reforms to the universities, those reforms apply to those 81 institutions. So it is important for Wikipedia to be clear about precisely what those 81 institutions are. If there are other institutions that people might mistake for being public universities, such as the University of Bordeaux, then Wikipedia should make the distinctions clear to its readers. For all these reasons, it makes sense to have an article on the public universities of France, and it makes sense to have a template to navigate among those universities.
-
-
- This by no means excludes having articles on other institutions of higher education and research in France. On the contrary: of course we should have articles on the grands établissements, of course we should have articles on the PRES and related institutions, etc. And for each of these categories, we should have navigation templates, to allow readers to easily move from one to the other.
-
-
- It might in the future make sense to combine some of these articles or templates. However, I believe such a move is premature at this time. My observation is that the work on these other sorts of institutions is not yet mature. Does Wikipedia really have a definitive list of PRES and related institutions? The evolution of the page on Grandes écoles indicates a continued disagreement about just which institutions properly fall in this category. I didn't, by the way, see the grandes écoles in the proposed enlarged template, and it is not at all clear, at least to me, what the rationale is for including some institutions of higher education and research and not including others.
-
-
- So my recommendation is that we not weaken a very crisply defined category, but rather that we work to build up the other categories so that they too are well defined and clear. Start, for example, with the List of colleges and universities in France cited above. Frankly, right now, it's a mess! It's incomplete, it combines different types of institution under the a single category, etc. Once this is straightened out and rationalized, and there's consensus about how everything is categorized, then we can think about a larger combined template. -- MyPOV (talk) 03:51, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Wikipedia ranking of Grandes écoles
Refer to discussion there.
Normal lionne (talk) 08:45, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
- Thank you for your comments. I've replied on the discussion page for Grandes écoles in the threads that you started regarding the removed ranking by Wikipedia page view statistics and the current list that has been tagged since July 2008 as being deficient. I fully support your effort to clean up the article. Objective criteria are definitely the way to go, but we can certainly do better than Wikipedia page views. -- MyPOV (talk) 21:10, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
