[edit] The Sudbury Wolves broadcast

Hi Bearcat, I noticed earlier that someone had submitted information that CIGM will no longer be the voice of the Sudbury Wolves on CIGM-FM and will be heard on CJTK-FM instead during the 2009-2010 season. I don't know if this is relevant with these stations, but should the information on the Sudbury Wolves be removed on both articles? Thanks. (Webfan29). 29, August 2009, 05:56 (UTC).

[edit] Moving page from Sandbox to main article space

Hi Bearcat,
Thank you for fixing my error on the categories. I read that articles should have categories but didn't understand not to do it so soon.

I would like to move my first article into the main space now but thought I would ask if you think it's OK? I've been writing it for quite a while and once I had all the info and references, I put in the sandbox and tweaked it for formatting. I also tried to make sure it met the requirements on Wikipedia. If you think it's OK, I'd appreciate confirmation that I just use the move tab at the top of the page and rename it "Sonia King". Once it's moved, do I then go and add the appropriate categories?

Thank you very much, Barcelona02 (talk) 23:59, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
(First time to post on a talk page. Hope I did it correctly)

I see you are on the radio project. This article seems to be lacking references and the assertion that the radio station is the oldest in WV may be incorrect, as indicated by this chart. Maybe you have a reference to straighten this out? [1]. cheers--Beth Wellington (talk) 19:37, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

Makes sense. Maybe you could also change the wording even w.o a reference so that the info won't be inaccurate. And ask the radioo project for a source?

[edit] Removal of PROD from The Alright, Its Not Me Tour

Hello Bearcat, this is an automated message from SDPatrolBot to inform you the PROD template you added to The Alright, Its Not Me Tour has been removed. I began expanding it. Seems to meet ENT through his works and meet GNG through a couple souces I added. There's more... and he had a decent stage career before getting into film and TV. Care to lend a hand? MichaelQSchmidt (talk) 04:41, 4 September 2009 (UTC)

Bearcat, thanks for helping out with The Monsters of Templeton and Delicate Edible Birds. Although I don't think it's a category yet, I am hoping to add more pages for notable writers from Upstate New York and New York in general. Over time, my wiki writing skills have improved a bit, but I need a lot of work to do it well. I also added Norton Juster's Stark Naked: A Paranomastic Odyssey, his odd little cartoon book of contrived names. Best Regards from the Botendaddy (talk) 13:48, 6 September 2009 (UTC)

Hi. I've made a proposal at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals/2009/September. Your input would be much needed. I believe that the Quebec French language film indistry is distinct from general Canadian cinema? Let us know, thanks. Himalayan 18:23, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit] 35 Dundas Street East -> 33 Dundas Street East

So apparently Rogers decided to change the street address of their new digs to 33, and User:Insideguelph started a new article at 33 Dundas Street East and manually changed 35 Dundas Street East to a redirect. I've already merged the contents of the two together under the article for #35, could you delete the new article and move the old one over? Thanks. - Hinto (talk) 16:30, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Ill-advised category name

Category:Settlers of British Columbia I just found, via Peter Barnhart; I hadn't noticed it previously on Morris Moss. The problem with "settlers" as a term is manifold; it is use by modern-day native politicos to refer to all non-native inhabitants/peoples, and can also refer to new immigrants of any era, e.g. my own parents who "settled" in BC in 1946. I note that some US states have "Pioneer" categories but even that term is "loaded" and in BC's case there's actually an official definition, re BC Arhives or the Vancouver City Archives, applying to those in the province before the opening of the railway. "Settlers" as a category will widely overlap with Category:Pre-Confederation British Columbia people....as per your previous assertion that categories require a parent article to validate their name, where is List of settlers of British Columbia, and what is your definition of "settler"??Skookum1 (talk) 19:48, 10 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Brazilian politicians

Why did you remove the Category:Brazilian politicians from a lot of biographies of Brazilian politicians? For instance João Goulart is not a Brazilian politician anymore. The man has been one of the most important ones. This is ridiculous. Please undo this ill-advised re-categorization. - DonCalo (talk) 12:10, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

I strongly advise you to WP:SUBCAT. Not all subcategories serve this systematic "breaking down" function. - DonCalo (talk) 17:08, 11 September 2009 (UTC)
Well, I don't agree with your interpretation. Politicians are sometimes Presidents or whatever, but first and foremost politicians. If the Category:Members of the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies and Category:Members of the Brazilian Senate and other categories per state would be there, the category Brazilian politician would be empty. Break downs are not obligatory. - DonCalo (talk) 09:18, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Zone of Billings, MT

Hi, where are we suppose to put these zones?

  • Cathedral District

They should have it's own page and not be redirected to the Neighborhoods of Billings, Montana page and I think people should know that these zones do exist in Billings.

[edit] Hawthorne (Series)

Since I noticed you have contributed to a Wikipedia page for a TNT television program, I am requesting your help with TNT’s HawthoRNe Wikipedia page, because one editor of the site refuses to allow changes to the page. His personal hatred and bias towards this television program is obvious, and his control of the content on the page is unlike anything I have ever come across in all my searches on Wikipedia. I have added relevant information that would be of interest to viewers of the program, such as the day of the week and the time the program is airing, as well as the names of the production companies, only to see the information repeatedly taken down. Something as trivial as putting the show’s name in italics (as has been done with other television programs) has been deleted. One other person added a positive review, only to have it blocked. I am hoping that information I have added in the past regarding this television program could be restored, or that I and others be allowed to make changes to the site. One of two areas of contention is that this editor has selectively posted a long list of negative reviews without allowing any balance with positive reviews. Additionally, it would appear on many other television pages that there is no "Critical Reception" section at all, and editing or removing the section on this page is unfairly determined to be "vandalism." The second issue is that this editor has complained of copyright violations with the Plot Summary, even though countless pages for television programs, such as "The Mentalist" (CBS) and "Raising the Bar" (TNT,) and numerous movie pages have taken plot information and cited back to the official sites. Numerous shows with Wikipedia pages use the networks' plot descriptions for the Episode Descriptions, and cite back to them. If there is a standard, then it would apply to all the entertainment sites. If no information or sentences can be cited from official sites or press releases, then at least I and others should be permitted to make the necessary changes to make the page in compliance with Wikipedia rules. Thank you very much for any help with this. Cotto 16:13, 26 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit] "the" Arcade Fire

Hi Bearcat, I recently boldly went through the Arcade Fire article and inserted a "the" in the band's name (depending on where it fit), per consensus at featured articles Pixies and Sex Pistols (though there is no established consensus yet at Arcade Fire). Since you're interested in Canadian music, would you give your two cents on the matter at Talk:Arcade Fire#Arcade Fire / The Arcade Fire? Thanks, -M.Nelson (talk) 01:13, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Could you please explain...

I'd be very grateful if you would return to the {{afd}} on Shona Holmes and explain your BLP1e assertion. Several contributors to that discussion have pointed out that her precedent-setting 2007 law-suit is a whole other event. We have argued that this article encompasses at least two events. Of course you are entitled to disagree. But I would be very grateful if you explained why you discounted the civil, meaningful and specific counterarguments to BLP1e. Thanks for your reply. I don't agree. I left my response on the {{afd}}. IANAL. Are you a lawyer? Geo Swan (talk) 14:45, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Laboratorija Zvuka

Laboratorija Zvuka was in categories Serbian rock musical groups, Serbian New Wave musical groups and Serbian alternative rock music groups because they were New Wave and alternative rock in the initial perido only. The same goes for Elektricni orgazam (I'm not sure if you removed the Serbian rock musical groups category from that article) - they were post-punk and New Wave only in their initial period and later turned to Rolling Stones-influenced mainstream rock, so I think it should stay in all of theese three categories, at least until a category titled Serbian mainstream rock bands or something similar is created. [edit] CfD nomination of Category:Taiwanese rock music groups

I have nominated Category:Taiwanese rock music groups (edit|talk|history|links|watch|logs) for deletion. Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at the discussion page. Thank you. Nezzadar (talk) 15:58, 4 October 2009 (UTC)

Rationale: A category with one entry does not a category make. Please add more quickly or don't build a category at all. My advice is to have at least three pages for the category before making it. Nezzadar (talk) 16:00, 4 October 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Emil and the Detectives

I'm baffled by your removal of the Category:Children's novels from the article Emil and the Detectives; n.b. you left the Category:Children's novel stubs. [edit] The Sixties

Hi, In the course of your series of moves I think you've lost the article on the radio show: The Sixties redirects to 1960s which has a hatnote for The Sixties (radio show) which redirects back to The Sixties! Rather than try and sort it out myself again, I leave it to you to disentangle. Thanks. PamD (talk) 06:59, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

I see your response and I'm rather surprised: surely no editor, even (especially?) an Administrator, should, in effect, delete an article without using PROD or AfD unless it fits under WP:CSD? There are processes to go through, and "because it isn't notable and didn't have any references" is not grounds for speedy deletion. Please reinstate that article, with the hatnote from The Sixties. As far as I can remember, my only involvement with the article was finding it while stub-sorting and doing my best to sort out the mess its creating editor had made by over-writing an existing redirect, but in fairness to that creating editor and anyone else who cares about the article/radio show, I don't think it should be killed off like this without due process. [edit] Pink Life LGBT Association

What does the Wikipedia community consider a "reasonable timeframe" to be for an article such as Pink Life LGBT Association to be edited to include material that shows how it's a notable encyclopedia entry? I just don't want to put up the CSD tag too soon without giving the entry author time to update it, but at the same time, if it's not going to be updated, I believe the page (at least as it's written now) would fall under A7 CSD. [edit] Teena Brandon

Teena Brandon Per your discussion on my page:

" Kindly learn the difference between sex and gender. Physical sex is determined by what's between your legs, while gender is determined by mental, emotional, social and presentational cues — and while it's not as common as people in whom they're the same, the two can be different from each other in a single individual. There has never been any sort of dispute about whether Brandon Teena was male or female anatomically — but that's not relevant to the question of pronouns at all. That question is determined by public presentation and identity, not by genitals — that is, it's determined by a person's gender, not necessarily by their physical sex.

And a person does not have to have completed sex reassignment surgery to be transgender — not everybody, for example, can afford to pay for it, and a person has to live as the target gender for a number of years before they're even allowed to have the surgery. There merely has to be a disparity between their birth sex and their brain gender. Bearcat (talk) 19:43, 25 October 2009 (UTC)"

Bearcat,

Sex and gender differences are not scientifically two different things. Teena Brandon WAS born and unfortunately passed away as a female. Physiologically, and in every other way known in science. Just because she called herself a man did not make her so. Even HER MOTHER put "Daughter" on her tombstone. The MOS:IDENTITY specifically states that the correct citation is in identifying a group of people; citing a Jew as JEWISH, for example, and not to be used in it's singular application for which you want to use it for. Wikipedia is a valuable online resource for FACTS, and to misrepresent Teena as a male doesn't do Wikipedia justice. Therefore I respectfully ask that you please leave the article as is in it's present form. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Tgox1 (talkcontribs) 23:01, 25 October 2009 (UTC)

Bearcat,

Look. I am a very passionate person, so sometimes I write in a way that is pretty "harsh". I do not mean to offend you, or anyone, I just believe that on this occasion that I am right. About the rules, I have read them. And I truly do not believe that I am breaking any of them. Therefore while I back off the tone and the stronger words I have used during this discussion, I firmly stand by my position as I have written them, just not the delivery. So, if I have offended you, I apologize, that was not my intent. If you want to delete whatever I wrote to you, or at least "(in a) "Nutshell" my position so our dispute could educate others on rules, then you have my wholehearted permission to. I do feel you overstepped your boundaries by locking that article, if anything you should have had an outside our discussion Administrator do it, with a caveat explaining why.

As a solution, I would accept the article to stay the way you think is best, with a specific and detailed citation in the beginning of the article citing the MOS:IDENTITY you think is applicable, and a brief description detailing the difference to make the article reader-friendly. Is this something that would fix our problem?

[edit] Photographers

On this edit of yours: I'm guessing that you removed the category "French photographers" as the man is in "French photojournalists" which itself is within "French photographers". However, much of HCB's work can can only with some difficulty be labeled photojournalism. So I'd say he was a French photojournalist and also, journalism aside, a French photographer. Comments?

[edit] CTV Northern Ontario

Hi Bearcat, I found this in the Sudbury Star dated October 27, 2009 regarding "MCTV faces uncertain future, CTV executives say". I'm wondering if this information should be added to the CTV Northern Ontario article? Since MCTV the former branding of the CTV stations in Northern Ontario was mentioned in the Sudbury Star today (in October 2009), i'm wondering if this following info. should also be added in CTV Northern Ontario's article? "MCTV was also rebranded as CTV Northern Ontario in the same year (2005). Since the change, some viewers still refer to the stations as "MCTV" and is currently listed as MCTV in local telephone directories and on satellite dishes such as Bell TV and Star Choice". If you look at the newspaper article in the Sudbury Star, you'll notice people are still refering CTV Northern Ontario as the old "MCTV" branding today. Take care. [edit] The Bone Conduction Music Show

How do I go about challenging your deletion nomination? I can't even find a link to a debate page. The Bone Conduction Music Show has been the subject of newspaper articles for at least the last 15 years, even longer. One of WEMU's biggest radio programs, it garnered a lot of media attention when the station director cut the program in a disagreement with Thayrone's anti-Iraq war beliefs. It received further notoriety after Thayrone played a blues song with lyrics about stuffing a woman inside the trunk of a Cadillac. I've read the articles regarding the show in the Sunday edition of The Detroit News-Free Press, and I'm sure The Ann Arbor News, if not The Michigan Daily or Eastern Michigan's student paper, can corroborate. I saw your comments posted here on Taylor Mitchell's AfD from a little over 2 weeks ago. To answer your rhetorical statement, i had been working on an article for her. I don't usually develop what little new content i contribute on wiki so there is no record of it. I had the tv on while editing something and CBC gave me some just shocking news. I stopped. By the next morning it had been created by someone else, AfD'd, and kept. I figured her article would develop into my first, and maybe only, featured article - had her career continued. As a second thought, what is your opinion on including in her article that her last concert was recorded and streamed online. Last time i looked it had a little over 21K views. Speedy deletion nomination of E-learning/version 2

Ambox warning pn.svg
You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles. See the Article Wizard.
—Thank you.

A tag has been placed on E-learning/version 2, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the page appears to have no meaningful content or history, and the text is unsalvageably incoherent.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag) and leave a note on the page's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself.

If the page you created was a test, please use the sandbox for any other experiments you would like to do. Feel free to leave a message on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Hgfernan (talk) 00:09, 19 November 2009 (UTC)

sorry, i suppose i was overzealous. :)
my intentions were good: since the article was visibly an orphan, i tried to contact people that cared about it. a speedy deletion is an extreme measure.
i stand corrected, though.

[edit] South East Radio

Hi Bearcat, i've made quite a few edits to South East Radio in the last few days. I was wondering if you could have a quick look at the article to see if it is worth-while asking for a re-assessment of its quality? If it is still a long way off of what it needs to be, could you give me a couple of specific pointers? I don't mean to cheeky, but given your role in wikiprojects radio, i though that you might be the editor to ask. Cheers, Darigan (talk) 14:15, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

Hi Bearcat, I've just had a good read of your reply. Thanks, i didn't think you'd offer me so much detail. I can see a clear way forward for SER article now, i'm looking forward to help build it. Thanks again for the excellent response. Best, Darigan (talk) 09:12, 2 December 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Southern Ontario

I understand your motives and rationale in thinking that because Muskoka is no longer a district it is part of Southern Ontario. However it was a district and only recently became a single tier regional municipality. Because it is no longer a real district doesn't mean it automatically becomes part of Southern Ontario. It is open to interpretation, but is historically part of Northern Ontario. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.183.149.174 (talk) 15:37, 2 December 2009 (UTC)

Just because you grew up in Sudbury (Part of Northern Ontario) doesnt make you an expert on this subject. The "border" is of personal opinion, and changes depending on who you talk to. The "border" has historically been the County-District line. FACT ! 209.183.149.174 (talk) 17:15, 2 December 2009 (UTC)

I can't sit heer and explain something geographically that have you dont understand. I have attached a reference on the discussion page. Also I'm fully aware Muskoka dropped the "district" in 1971. Which is recently compared to Southern Ontario which dropped them before 1851 !

Here is a Government source showing Muskoka in Northern Ontario, with mapping to prove it. http://www.archives.gov.on.ca/english/on-line-exhibits/maps/ontario-north.aspx 209.183.149.174 (talk) 17:47, 2 December 2009 (UTC)

I'm not looking to get into an argument here. The reference clearly shows proof. Title = Districts of NORTHERN Ontario ... Listed under said Title = Muskoka and Parry Sound. I'm aware it is an old regional Municipality. But that isn't the argument. The argument is that Southern Ontario was once all "Counties". Muskoka was never a county. It was a District like the rest of the North. I'm sorry if you were led to believe that you are from Southern Ontario, but I must inform you that you are from Northern Ontario. 209.183.149.174 (talk) 18:00, 2 December 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Re: HBO Canada

I see the POV argument, although, the only reason I redirected to one over the other is because it only allows the redirect to go to one article. To solve this, HBO Canada should be deleted so no redirect is given. It's a multiplex channel, it's not relevent to give it a seperate article, it's like giving MFest or Showtime 2 a seperate article. Also, it's fine to duplicate info in both articles (MC/TMN) if the info is relevant to both articles and especially since there is sufficient info regarding other things in both articles, so HBO Canada info only counts for a small portion of that. musimax. (talk) 14:29, 4 December 2009 (UTC)

I would think to say TMN/MC as technically they are the originating networks since HBO Canada is a multiplex of those networks. Lets say if TMN/MC developed a series and that series was instead exclusively or non-exclusively aired on MFest and MC2, I think we would say the originating network would be TMN/MC instead. So I think the same should apply here. musimax. (talk) 17:47, 4 December 2009 (UTC)

If you wouldn't mind, keep a close eye on the CTOM-FM article. [edit] Governor General's Awards

Hi Bearcat. Thank you for your help with this category. I believe that I should now create Category:Governor General's Literary Awards as a subcat of Category:Governor General's Awards, to reflect the fact that Governor General's Awards is in fact a hodgepodge of different awards, granted by a variety of bodies. But if I did, then all those GG awards by year articles, from 1936 to 2009, should be renamed {year} Governor General's Literary Awards and placed in the Literary awards subcat, I believe. Do you agree? And if so, would you be able to help with AWB? I no longer have access to AWB, I think because I haven't used it in so long due to a predoninantly Mac OS work environment. thanks, Shawn in Montreal (talk) 20:57, 10 December 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Airdrie and Calgary Demographics Sections (2009 before 2006)

Hi Bearcat, I see you've moved my recent 2009 municipal census additions on the Airdrie and Calgary articles under the 2006 information. I use a top-down approach when it comes to census results as I believe that if someone comes to a municipality's article on Wikipedia for the purpose of learning its population, the person would prefer to know the municipality's most recent official population. If it is buried afterwards, there is a good chance that the person would quit at 2006 and not read further.

As such, my edits show the latest municipal census counts above the 2006 federal census results if the municipal census was conducted after 2006. As I go through the various Alberta municipality pages, if I see 2001 census info above 2006 census info, I move the info below the 2006 info. I also keep these additions brief so to deter readers from quitting before getting to the standard 2006 census info. Thought I'd propose this methodology to you in case you were planning to follow my progress across the province.

Cheers, --Hwy43 (talk) 08:47, 12 December 2009 (UTC)

Hi Bearcat, further to the above, I've since investigated how Statistics Canada and Alberta Municipal Affairs treat the ordering of census results. Both use a top-down (or most recent to least recent) approach when it comes to different censuses over time. See the Statistics Canada Census main web page (refer to legend on left) and Alberta Municipal Affairs Official Populations web page. As such, I'm going to revert your ordering edits under the Demographics sections of the Airdrie, Calgary and Lloydminster articles. If you have a concern, lets chat to see if we can come up with a different solution that could be mutually beneficial.
Cheers, --Hwy43 (talk) 06:42, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

[edit] List of People from Southern Ontario

Do not delete list/articles without first discussing it with other users. Your deletion of List of People from Southern Ontario was unwarranted and counter productive. This deletion was not necessary and should have been discussed first. PhilthyBear (talk) 23:40, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

Firstly you should realize your personal opinion is of no importance. Article deletion should be discussed before taking place.
Secondly if you think a list should be organized differently you should reorganize it and not delete it.
Lastly, as you are from Northern Ontario I can understand how you can not identify with Southern Ontario as a unified entity. If you were in fact from Southern Ontario you may actually identify with it, and have some sort of pride in being from the region. I have noticed you have been quite "stand offish" with other users regarding this topic. I suggest you stick to editing articles in which you are completely educated on and can positively contribute to. PhilthyBear (talk) 00:29, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
Once again, being from Northern Ontario I don't expect you to ever trully indentify with Southern Ontario as countless other "from" this region do, contrary to what you may think. Please discuss deletions in the future, thank you. PhilthyBear (talk) 00:53, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

[edit] DEFAULTSORT

Hm, I had a look at that looks as if AWB is driven off the presence of the WPBio banner on the talk page which is not really a good enough hint. I will log a bug/feature request. Rich Farmbrough, 03:26, 19 December 2009 (UTC).

With 700,000++ articles using that banner, its absence would not be reliable as a guarantee of person-hood, although its presence would be sufficient to assume non-person-hood.. I always think "musical-work-group" is a hint for a split second. Maybe the living parameter is a hint too, regardless of its state. Rich Farmbrough, 03:42, 19 December 2009 (UTC).
