[edit] Barnstar

Barnstar-law.png The Law Barnstar
For making articles about US law instead of river dancing on your computer.

And sorry about nominating that article for deletion. D'oh! --I dream of horses If you reply here, please leave me a {{Talkback}} message on my talk page. @ 02:54, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Another barnstar

Content Creativity Barnstar.png The Content Creativity Barnstar
For your creation of a huge amount of new content, particularly related to U.S. case law, antitrust law, and labor & employment law, and for writing a bunch of articles that I was either too lazy or too busy to do myself, I award you this Content Creativity Barnstar (besides, you already had the Law Barnstar). Eastlaw talk ⁄ contribs 08:22, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Random Act of Kindness

Random Acts of Kindness Barnstar.png The Random Acts of Kindness Barnstar
For being so kind and encouraging on the Help Desk

For your kind words and encouragement in your answer to Karen McCauley on Wikipedia:Help_Desk#Biotechnic & Histochemistry. I thought that was a really nice touch, and surprised me! As the user probably wouldn't know how to award this, I thought I would on her behalf Smile.png (maybe presumptious, but I can't really contact her, can I?!) PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 21:16, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Open CRS

Are you familiar with OpenCRS? I just posted one of the references from Wikileaks to a relevant page, they noted they already had it, and the link pointed to this site. I haven't checked to see if the Wikileaks site is more comprehensive.--SPhilbrickT 21:25, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

Yes, I did get my hand slapped, but it was justified – I should have checked the list of sources, not just assumed it wouldn’t be there. (Plus, after poking around this site, I see a reference to Open CRS d'oh!)
If I get some time this evening, I’ll write something up for the RS Notice board.
Thanks for your kind words.--SPhilbrickT 11:41, 21 July 2009 (UTC)
No problem letting you take a first crack at writing up something. A couple thoughts mulling though my head, use or ignore as you wish:
  • Does Wikileaks make a CRS report less reliable, because we cannot we as certain that they authored it?
  • Is the status of a CRS report in Open CRS "better" than the same report found in Wikileaks?
  • Is a CRS report automatically public domain? (I think the answer is no, but I'd like to hear a discussion)
  • How neutral is a CRS report - is it possible that a CRS report was commissioned to help support a particular POV, or are they supposed to be neutral sources of information?
  • Is there anything to be made of the distinction between CRS reports that are provided by the government and those that are not - for example, is the decision not to release something made because a report doesn't support what Congress wants it to support, or was it not released for some other reason?
Let me re-emphasize, I'm not telling you what to include in your write-up, just suggesting things that occur to me.--SPhilbrickT 13:20, 21 July 2009 (UTC)
Sounds like a good plan - I'll be happy to take a look at it when you are ready; however, don't feel constrained - if you get something you'd like another set of eyes to look at, I'd be happy to, if you get it ready and think it's fine, or if I'm not able to quickly respond, I'll understand if you post away. --SPhilbrickT 11:39, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Re: WP:Hornbook

You have new messages
Hello, Agradman. You have new messages at Kirill Lokshin's talk page.
Message added 02:59, 29 July 2009 (UTC). You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.
  • Looks good, although I'd cut out the thing about local chapters - that can maybe come later, but start small. In terms of guidelines we've got WP:MOSLAW, but that really needs to be expanded and cleaned up. Want to start discussing that on the moslaw talkpage in a tick? We can throw suggestions at the wall and see what sticks. Ironholds (talk) 08:27, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
I think getting a group together on the MOSLAW talkpage would probably work just as well as a dedicated "style guide". I'm now free from work for the next two months, so I'll start trying to work out a common layout for law articles we can implement there. Ironholds (talk) 15:19, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
  • Got your message. Love the project. Unfortunately, I don't think I will be able to spend much time on it for now. When I graduate in May 2010, however, I would like to contribute, especially on Florida law. I will try and keep myself informed. Good luck and feel free to contact me anytime!  :-) Lawyer2b (talk) 04:57, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
  • Great Idea. I'd love to help you, but unfortunately I don't study American Law. I study Dutch/Aruban Law, which is completely different. And so does everyone I know. But do keep it up, I applaud your initiative. Talk2chun (talk) 14:26, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
  • I'll second that, great idea, but as an English lawyer (barrister) who is only a member of the DE bar by dint of being employed there in-house, I am afraid that I am not able to help. I can assist on some matters of English legal history if that would be of assistance. – ukexpat (talk) 15:03, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
bwahaha, you're MIIINE NOW... Ironholds (talk) 15:19, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
  • I'm an English (trainee) solicitor, so I can't really help. Lawdroid (talk) 16:11, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
  • Been out of law school for nearly 10 years now, but I'm more than happy to help out when and where I can. Snarky Boy (talk) 16:30, 6 August 2009 (UTC)
I'm in. Wish this existed when I was in law school. Greenw47 (talk) 18:42, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit] English law

I think an English law wikiproject was proposed, but never got the numbers. I can't really see thaat many people replying so far, but we'll see what happens in terms of taskforces. Want to create a centralised discussion on the WP:L talkpage about suggestions for taskforces? Ironholds (talk) 22:06, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks

Wow! Thank you so much for the barnstar. It's very much appreciated.--Cdogsimmons (talk) 14:17, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Need expert help with ESA legislative history

Hello,
You look just like the person this article needs. I am working on it-but don't have a clue how to get the infobox completed. (GPO has an understandably huge gap in online docs.) I know all of us Wikipedians have no time, so either way if you can help, let me know on my talk page or refer me to someone who would be interested in this matter.

Gratefully Yours,

Marcia Wright (talk) 04:15, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

P.S. I am currently reading (as a reference source) the Stanford University Law Library book The Endangered Species Act, -so much to learn, so little time left to learn it. :)

  • Thank you Andrew for your help-looks like you gave all the information I need. Again, thank you! I did remove all the "STUFF' that was added though. It was not in any "easy to read" format. I do actually write the articles (starting with an outline on paper) or at least try to. I really want this one to be a quality article so it, one: must tell a story, two, tell it in a neutral voice, and three, tell it in a way that educates the reader and does not turn them off. A NY times news article is the style I strive for.
  • I will carefully look over the info and fill in the sidebar. Best of luck with your Wiki projects (I love law-but judges scare me too much LOL)

Sincerely, Marcia Wright (talk) 04:44, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

  • The reference comes from a book which is often subject to reclassification at any time. Basically, your work could be out of date by the time you finish the last line of the article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Keystoneridin (talkcontribs) 06:16, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
  • I see your demeanor and I understand that you are creating pages for purposeful use on Wikipedia. If you use the current sources that you have, the articles are not likely to stick. If you put a hold on the page so that you can search for more sources, you may be able to put relevant information that will expand the article further. I do not intend to intimidate or bully you, I would just like solid information on pages as many people use your work as credible sources.--keystoneridin! (talk) 06:25, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Farm Typology

this page is littered with missing links. the see also section does not even lead to anything. Once again, you are using the same source which can be edited at any time. I think you should create a table that talks about each one of the items that you currently have linked. Just my thoughts.--keystoneridin! (talk) 06:52, 1 August 2009 (UTC) Thi

[edit] ROFLMAO

LOL at this diff. I just got back from the airport a few hours ago.

I'm still looking at the hornbook project you are getting going. I like the idea of improving the references of the law articles we have, but how important do you think it is to have outlines for every casebook out there? There are usually multiple competing casebooks for each subject, and each one usually has a new edition every few years. Hell, the casebooks sitting on my shelf here at home are already outdated, and I finished my J.D. in 2007.

Regardless, I will continue adding to the legal content, and improving existing content, here on Wikipedia. I will be starting a Master of Public Policy program next month (yeah, I'm just a glutton for punishment), so I don't know how much time I will be able to devote to it in the coming weeks and months, but I will see what I can do. --Eastlaw talk ⁄ contribs 07:08, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Glad to help

Hi Andrew,
Thanks for inviting me to assist with the JD curriculum task force. I'm an attorney and law school librarian/professor, who has been a Wikipedian for about 4 years now. I'll try to make contributions when I am able.
Best wishes, Walshga (talk) 18:57, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

Hello, Thanks for inviting me, as well. I will be starting law school in a few weeks at Syracuse University. As such, I will certainly be using said books, as well as understanding the usefulness of such an endevour, and I plan on helping as much as law school with allow. One question: Have you looked at what is currently in place over at Wikiversity? It's not a lot, but the efforts may need some coordinating. Just a thought. 須藤 (talk) 19:21, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Legal History of the Endangered Species Act

I think that is a great idea-this law is very historic-like Kevin Starr said "The ESA is the Magna Carta of the environmental movement."

I'm confused about your comment on the sidebar though- the sidebar (infobox) is already in the article, but you'll see in edit mode all the blanks -here is a few that need information:

 sections amended= | leghisturl= | introducedin= | introducedbill= | introducedby= | introduceddate= | committees= | passedbody1= | passeddate1= | passedvote1= | passedbody2= | passeddate2= | passedvote2= Unregulated | conferencedate= | passedbody3= | passeddate3= | passedvote3= | passedbody4= | passeddate4= | passedvote4=

I took(copy/paste) the sidebar from Safe Drinking Water Act article, that sidebar was completed and looked very comprehensive. Let me know how it goes with your article-I have to return the book Endangered Species Act at Thirty tomorrow (no renewals on an interlibrary loan) but I stll have the Stanford Law ESA book for one more week so holler if you need anything. I'm offering my editing skills as well :) User:Marcia Wright (not signed in) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.81.214.226 (talk) 04:07, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

ah, thanks for reminding me, and also, thanks for showing me these details. I've never edited this particular userbox before.
okay, this is very intuitive. I'll take a look.

[edit] Re: wowowow

Thank you for the kind words! In any case, what I really like about the category is not so much that it eases the process of taking content wholesale from public domain sources (which is technically permitted, though the text may run afoul of policies such as WP:NPOV), but that it provides sources for the article. So even if the text is not suitable to be taken wholesale, it can still be cited as a source. —harej (talk) (cool!) 05:54, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Fine example of an up-and-coming new editor

Heya, Agradman, I'm glad to see that your taskforce idea came to life, and is doing very well! In fact, you've been quite the busy bee around here! Thanks for coming in and looking at things with fresh eyes. Sometimes, that's exactly what we need. Keep up the truly exceptional work! – ClockworkSoul 06:34, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Your comments on my talk page

Nice meeting you as well, Andrew. I'm not a law student so much as a former law student - I'm a first year (rising second year) at Jenner & Block in Chicago. I've been a Wikipedian for 3-4 years now, though I mostly do History topics. I haven't done much on Law on Wikipedia, but I saw your request on the Community Portal and I thought it'd be fun to relive 1L Torts. In fact, the fist Wikipedia article I ever wrote was on my 1L torts professor, Morton Horwitz.

If you have concerns about copyright infringement, you should get those grey areas cleared up sooner rather than later. Nothing is worse than working on a Wikipedia project for weeks only to end up with it being blanked by an Admin, an experience I have had on more than one occasion. I think that the Table of Contents approach I'm taking to Epstein's casebook is probably alright, but it'd be nice to make sure to avoid a possible revert. What do you think of the TOC approach I'm doing? I wasn't sure exactly what you had in mind.

At this point, I've posted the first three chapters from my Torts casebook, and I've already linked to 40 cases that haven't had articles created for them. That indicates to me that if there's any hope of improving Wikipedia coverage of American law for even your basic 1L subjects, there is a lot of work still to be done. [edit] Re: Political Red Cross

Hi Andrew, thanks for the links. The thing is I don't know Russian (think I pointed that out in the board post) though I've read a good deal about the era in other languages and in translation. So I wouldn't know where to find "Political Red Cross" on the Russian WP or in Russian-language historical literature. . The translation in some of the English web poages you indicated looks haphazard, as if it's been made by somebody who isn't good at English or by machine translation. Sometimes this makes the content unclear, but big thanks for finding those links! /Strausszek (talk) 09:17, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Discussion at WP content forks

I don't think I have been a participant at Wikipedia_talk:Content_forking, though I'd be interested to know how you have the impression. My view on the proposal is that the revision loses the meaning that all content forks are less than desirable, by silently omitting the previous assessment that includes unintentional forks as being less than desirable though their effect of enabling diversity of a non-consensual sort, even if unintentional.

[edit] Scots and goats

Oh, we don't make jokes about Scots and goats. No idea where that came from. Common types of humour about scots in England:

  1. jokes about them shagging sheep
  2. ginger jokes
  3. alcoholism jokes
  4. massive obesity/deep fried food jokes
  5. anything taking the piss out of their independence movement and the Scots language

Really you have to be British to get away with it, though. Ironholds (talk) 19:19, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

[edit] NPOV

You'd need strong consensus to change a longstanding lead on a core content policy. The changes you made removed some fairly important points. SlimVirgin talk|contribs 05:58, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Not at all

Like I said, I figured you'd have the right way with words that eludes me, and I'm fairly happy with what you put forwards that it seems dickish to argue the toss. Good luck with the fifth pillar. I'll try to keep an eye on the conversation if needed. Hiding T 21:00, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

[edit] NPOV

Hi Andrew, thanks for that. Copy editing the NPOV policy will be difficult. It's extremely repetitive, but it is true that a few key words and sentences are important. The trick will be in identifying the ones that everyone agrees matter, so we can ditch the rest. Not sure I have the stomach for it, but if I do, your help would be most welcome. Likewise, if you decide to pitch in, I will try to assist rather than carp from the sidelines. :) SlimVirgin talk|contribs 19:44, 24 August 2009 (UTC)

I finally worked out a (somewhat) stable version of HAPPI that is ready for testing. If you are still interested in using the tool, I'd appreciate it if you let me know about any bugs you find. [edit] Citation needed

This reminds me I never replied to your original query... my apologies! I'm not sure how that one slipped by.

You're right that we could usefully distinguish between a strict "how-to-use" and a more editorial discussion of where and when and why to use the template, and the various cultural overtones we apply to it... but I'm not really sure this particular page is appropriate in tone for the Wikipedia: namespace; it's a quick history of the template and its usage, written deliberately stiltedly, rather than anything usefully meta.

I initially wrote it as a bit of light-heartedness, and I think it's better it remain that way, seperate from the actual advisory material. I'm not sure where the link to it from that page crept in, but if you feel it's more appropriate on the talkpage, please do move it there.

Thank you for uploading File:Pulst.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. FASTILYsock(TALK) 08:23, 29 December 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Pulst-freepermission.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en‐at‐wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en‐at‐wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 10:28, 29 December 2009 (UTC)
