About Me

My background on Wikimedia is fairly unexciting. I first started editing in February 2006: my first edits from this account essentially mark the start of my editing career: I have rarely deliberately edited as an IP. I became a bot operator in December 2007, an admin in February 2008, and an oversighter in August 2009. Along the way I have discovered my main talent within Wikimedia: I became and remain a committed template coder and backstage 'techie'. Notwithstanding that, I have made occasional substantial article contributions, including the work on enwiki of which I am most proud: my first featured article, Emma Watson.

Since January 2009 I began to take more interest in the MediaWiki software itself, filing a number of bugs and patches to bugzilla. I now have SVN commit access, which allows me to help develop the MediaWiki software directly. I am an administrator at mediawiki.org, the documentation site for MediaWiki, and I have a few minor rights scattered across a number of projects. I have about 27,000 edits across all projects.

What I do

Although I can be a creative person, and I enjoy writing, I do a lot of grunt or fairy work, as I rarely have the perseverance to complete any major projects. That said, I do have a few green and gold shiny things to my name (I notched up a 75-edit streak on The Colour of Magic (TV film), which made Start → GA. I helped bring List of poker hands to FL, Wicked (musical) to GA, and Emma Watson to FA). I mainly work with templates on Wikipedia: I designed or help design the Requests listing system for the late League of Copyeditors, the complete overhaul of the CSD template system around {{Db-meta}}, the current version of {{pp-meta}}, and {{WPBannerMeta}}, the WikiProject banner meta-template. I am an active participant at The WikiProject Council and WikiProject Musical Theatre. My Bot account, MelonBot, performs several useful tasks for these projects and elsewhere. I have recently applied for a toolserver account with which I will be able to develop more useful bot functions. I regularly patrol Category:Protected edit requests, am active on Templates for deletion, and consider myself an expert template coder. Most importantly for the encyclopedia, however, I can never resist the urge to edit any page I happen to visit which looks like it needs it :D.

New articles

I rarely create new articles - we have enough of those already.

Templates

I've created or worked on a couple of templates which are quite widely used. I should be able to answer any questions over the use or structure of these.

Articles

Although I tend to work 'backstage', I have made significant contributions to a handful of articles when I develop a special connection to them.

The Barnstar of Good Humour

I saw your comments regarding yourself at Wikipedia:WikiProject Mixed Drinks#Participants. Speaking as one basically brain-dead bot boy to another who describes himself as such, it's nice to know that there's someone else out there who can do the same sort of thing and actually admit it. John Carter (talk) 01:19, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

I, Coppertwig, would like to award you, Happy-melon, this Barnstar of Intrepidity for leadership and syntaxcraft in templatiferous territory during the development and implementation of the new versions of the CSD templates.

Master Blacksmith Happy-melon: you, and your trusty apprentice MelonBot, are hereby awarded the order of the bath for your sterling efforts to clean up Wikipedia:Peer review. (Or should that be Wikipedia:Peer review/archive1?) Geometry guy 19:29, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

The Barnstar of Good Humor

For this (which I liked so much I plagiarized it on my main userpage) and this edit summary, which I'm still laughing about. J.delanoygabsadds 02:05, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

The Special Barnstar

This is to thank you (Happy Melon, in specific, not any other random reader) for clearing the final obstacle towards finally standardising the documentation for succession boxes. I took my time, it is true, but I never forget those who have helped me. Should you need anything, anything at all, the members of SBS will be happy to help you.
