This is a list of toponyms used in the Macedonian languages of northern Greece for places in Greece. Some continue to be used locally, especially by older people. The etymology of the names in the 'Macedonian name' column varies; many are identifiably from Macedonian roots (e.g. Voden), some of Ottoman Turkish (e.g. Kara-kjoj), Greek (e.g. Ber, Solun), Albanian, or Aromanian provenance. Some are the same as the official (Ottoman Turkish) names under the Ottoman Empire, others are not. In the first half of the 20th century, the Greek government replaced some of the non-Greek names with Greek phonetic variants, Greek translations, revivals of ancient Greek names, or new coinages.[1]
