The Uva Wellassa University (UWU) is the 14th National university in Sri Lanka. It was intended as a new university based on modern educational concepts differentiated from the traditional university system. It differs from other universities in academic and administration structure, and is designed to provide essential skills and broad general education for all students while providing the training necessary to develop local agriculture and mineral resources of Sri Lanka. Value addition to local resources base caters for sustainable development in the nation.
