The University of Zambia is Zambia's largest university, founded in 1966. It has a student population of about 10,000. Its main campus-the Great East Road Campus- is located on the Great East Road, about 7 km from Lusaka City.It also has the Ridgeway Campus within Lusaka City located at the University Teaching Hospital(famously called UTH);this campus specifically houses students persuing medical and pharmacological related courses.

Unusual for a university in Africa, the University of Zambia has a nanotechnology research center that was founded in 2001. The center was founded by Elijah Mwansa, who after graduating from the University of Zambia received his Ph.D. from University of Cambridge and was a professor at University of Heidelberg and Carnegie Mellon University. The center has several researchers from other African countries and Europe and is the only of its kind on the African continent. It is financed by the government of Zambia as part of the Zambia 2020 initiative and various grants from foreign science foundations.

Levy Mwanawasa- the late Zambian President studied Law at UNZA Dr. Twange Kasoma- Prominent US based Media Academician,Professoe Muna Ndulo-Currently Dean of Law School at Cornell University,USA also studied Law at Unza.Hakainde Hichilema-Leader of the opposition political party UPND studied Economics at UNZA.
