The University of New Haven is a private, comprehensive, coeducational university located in West Haven, Connecticut, which borders the larger city of New Haven and Long Island Sound.

The University was founded in 1920 and is situated on an 84-acre (339,936 m²) campus, with an enrollment of about 3,600 undergraduate students and 1,600 graduate students. It offers associate's and bachelor's degrees in more than 95 programs and master’s degrees in 25 areas. The University is a member of the Northeast-10 Conference in NCAA Division II, one of the most academically and athletically successful conferences in the NCAA. It offers 18 varsity sports, including football, men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, baseball and softball, and men’s and women’s soccer. The university also has a variety of club sports, along with a recreation center that sponsors numerous intramural activities and fitness classes. Its mascot is the Charger, a term used to describe a medieval war horse.

The past five years have been a time of transformation for the University. In 2008-2009, freshman enrollments shattered all University records and surpassed other schools nationally with an increase of 67 percent. At the same time, new student applications increased 100 percent[2]. New facilities, including the David A. Beckerman Recreation Center, the new $46 million Soundview residence hall, and the Henry C. Lee Institute of Forensic Science [3], which is to begin construction in the summer of 2009, establish physical evidence of the changes. The Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium, Kayo Field, the Laurel Vlock Center for Convergent Media, a new Systems Engineering laboratory and new music practice rooms are further evidence of an increased emphasis on capital improvements.

The University has also created new and expanded programs, hired new faculty, built state-of-the-art smart classrooms, expanded study-abroad opportunities, and become a nationally recognized leader in experiential education. It has created a partnership with 10 municipalities within the region, including the cities of New Haven and West Haven, that culminated in the opening of a Science and Engineering University Magnet School in West Haven for grades 6 through 12 in September 2008.

[edit] Residential Housing

Freshmen are typically housed in one of four residence halls:

  • Bethel Hall - Located next to Dodds Auditorium. It is a suite style building housing fifteen to seventeen students per suite in double or triple rooms surrounding a common lounge. Bethel Hall is closest to the campus center, Bartels Hall, and the majority of the academic buildings. In the fall of 2009 Bethel Hall will have only double rooms lowering the room capacity to eleven to twelve.
  • Bixler Hall - Bixler Hall is a co-ed building featuring single sex wings. There are triple rooms in this building, with eleven rooms per wing, a common room, and bathrooms on each floor. Bixler Hall houses the Office of Residential Life, the student mailroom, and a game room on the first floor.
  • Botwinik Hall - Located near Maxcy, Botwinik is also a co-ed building, with single sex suites which comprise two triple rooms, a bathroom, and a small common room. Botwinik Hall is the location of Sandella's, a Southwestern style eatery, which is located on the first floor.
  • New Hall - Located along Boston Post Road, New Hall is also co-ed with single sex suites. A New Hall suite consists of two triple rooms, a bathroom consisting of a shower, water closet, and vanity. Every floor has a small common lounge. The first floor of New Hall is home to Pandini's and Sky Ranch Grill (alternatives to the dining hall located in Bartels Hall), as well as outside vendors such as Dunkin' Donuts, which is open to the general public as well as students. New Hall also houses the Business Office and Office of Human Resources.

The building will consist of both single double, four person apartments with a full kitchen and air conditioning. Construction began in spring of 2008 and the hall is expected to open for the start of the 2009–2010 academic year.

WNHU is broadcast on 88.7 FM (and streamed online here) and is voluntarily staffed by students, alumni, and members of the general community.
