The University of Nebraska is the public university system in the state of Nebraska, USA. Founded in 1869 with one campus in Lincoln, the system now has four universities and an agricultural college.

• University of Nebraska–Lincoln, which is the state's flagship, land-grant, Carnegie Research I/Research-Extensive university. Founded in 1869, the university is a member of the Association of American Universities, a group of the 62 leading research universities in North America.
• University of Nebraska at Omaha, which is the state's urban university. Founded in 1908 as Omaha University, the school joined the University of Nebraska system in 1968.
• University of Nebraska at Kearney, which is the state's university especially focused on undergraduates, and in a smaller setting. Founded in 1905 as the Nebraska State Normal School at Kearney, the school joined the University of Nebraska system in 1991.
• University of Nebraska Medical Center (located in Omaha). The medical school was founded in 1880, and it became a part of the University of Nebraska system in 1902.
• Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture (located in Curtis, Nebraska)

Two of its campuses, at Lincoln and Omaha, partner in the Peter Kiewit Institute.

The University of Nebraska was founded in 1869 in Lincoln, Nebraska. For the first 99 years of its existence, the University was synonymous with the Lincoln campus. In 1902, Omaha Medical College became part of the University of Nebraska system. The University reorganized into its present form in 1968 when it took control of the municipal University of Omaha, which became the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Kearney State College, the University of Nebraska at Kearney, became the fourth member of the University of Nebraska system in 1976.

The President of the University is James B. Milliken, J.D., who succeeded L. Dennis Smith in 2004. Members of the Board of Regents are:

• Charles Wilson District 1 in the Lincoln area
• Howard Hawks District 2 in greater Omaha
• Charles Hassebrook District 3 in northeastern Nebraska
• Robert Whitehouse District 4 in the Omaha area
• Jim McClurg District 5 in southeast Nebraska, including part of Lincoln
• Kent Schroeder District 6 in central Nebraska,
• Bob Phares District 7 in western Nebraska (Mr. Phares became a regent when former board member Dave Hergert was convicted on impeachment charges for campaign finance violations and removed from office by the Nebraska Supreme Court on July 7, 2006)
• Randolph Ferlic District 8 in the Omaha area
• Amber Lewis, representing the students of the University of Nebraska at Kearney
• Emily Zimmer, representing the students of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
• Jonathan Henning, representing the students of the University of Nebraska Medical Center
• Alex Williams, representing the students of the University of Nebraska at Omaha
