The University of Hawaiʻi-West Oʻahu (UHWO), is a public university and one of ten branches of the University of Hawaiʻi system. Currently located adjacent to the Pearl City CDP in the City and County of Honolulu, Hawaiʻi,[1] it is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and opened in January 1976. As a four-year institution, UH West Oʻahu offers baccalaureate degrees in liberal arts and professional studies. Academic programs stress the exploration of interdisciplinary studies, cross-cultural and international studies and communication skills.[2]

Although UH West Oʻahu is currently located in Pearl City, the school will relocate to a new state-of-the-art fully sustainable green campus in Oʻahu's "second city" of Kapolei in 2011. The groundbreaking ceremony, which featured a prominent group of state leaders, was held at the new campus site on January 14, 2009.[3] UHWO was included on the 2010 List of Military Friendly Schools, recognizing the "top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America’s veterans as students."[4] In 2009 the school was awarded a federal grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development to create a recovery center and service learning programs in the Leeward community of Waiʻanae.[5] In the same year UHWO faculty received a grant from the National Park Service to conduct research on the World War II-era Honouliuli internment site in west Oʻahu.[6]

Bachelor of Arts degrees are offered in Accounting, Anthropology, Disaster Preparedness & Emergency Management, Early Childhood Education, Economics & Finance, English, General Business Administration, General Public Administration, Hawaiian-Pacific Studies, Health Care Administration, History, Justice Administration, Marketing, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology. The university also offers a Bachelor of Education in Elementary Education as well as Bachelor of Applied Science degrees in Respiratory Care, Computer Electronics Networking Technology and Culinary Management.[7]

Certificate programs are offered in Applied Forensic Anthropology, Disaster Preparedness & Emergency Management, Health Care Administration and Substance Abuse & Addictions Studies.

The university offers select baccalaureate degrees through distance learning programs in collaboration with University and Education Centers located on every Hawaiian island.

University of Hawaii West Oahu consist of personalized attention classes. Therefore, teachers intentionally offer students the help they need. The student to faculty ratio is 11:1, meaning a very personalized college experience.[8]Also, the convenience of assistance are there with the friendliest faculty and staffs. Within the campus overview, the convenience and tuition is often the benefit of the university in which degree seekers attempt to aim towards. Convenience With classes held on campus or through the distance learning program, students from all around the state will find UH West O‘ahu classes easily accessible.[9]

As far as the campus overview, the tuition is fair and hard to beat, for the reason that it is one of the lowest university tuition in the nation. Degree seekers find University Of Hawaii West Oahu to be more affordable than many of its peers.[10]UH West Oahu’s entire campus is made up of a small chain of portables.[11] It currently houses 1,140 undergraduate students, consisting of 72.2% of women and 27.8% of men, leaving a very unbalanced gender ratio.[12]
