The University System of Ohio is the public university system of the state of Ohio. Legally unified under Governor Ted Strickland in 2007, the University System of Ohio is governed by the Ohio Board of Regents.

The University System of Ohio comprises all of Ohio's public institutions of higher education: 13 four-year state universities, 24 branch and regional campuses, 23 two-year community colleges and technical colleges, and one public medical college, as well as Adult Workforce Education (AWE) and Adult Basic and Literacy Education (ABLE) programs. The AWE and ABLE programs were transferred from the Ohio Department of Education to the Ohio Board of Regents on 1 January 2009, to provide a flexible system of higher education that will improve services while reducing costs to students. The total annual enrollment of University System of Ohio institutions is over 478,376 as of Fall 2008, ranking it in the top five largest state university systems in the United States.^[2]

[edit] Strategic Plan

Former U.S. Representative Eric Fingerhut was appointed by the Ohio Board of Regents as the first chancellor of the system and was tasked by Strickland with formulating a ten-year strategic plan for the overhaul and restructuring of Ohio's public system of higher education. The plan was released to the public on March 31, 2008.^[3] Included in the strategic plan is the Ohio Skills Bank (OSB) initiative. The OSB will match academic and skills training with industry demand within Ohio's twelve economic development regions. The OSB is an important step in the goal to make higher education a principal driver of Ohio's economic growth and prosperity over the next 10 years. A plan for accountability has also been established which includes 20 "measurements for success" to determine the success of the USO strategic plan.
