University Center is a locale in Bay and Saginaw counties in the U.S. state of Michigan,[1] and the name of the post office with the ZIP code of 48710.[2] [1] The locale is named for the institutions of higher education served by the ZIP code: Delta College and Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU).[3] [edit] HistoryIn the 1950s, leaders and residents of Bay, Saginaw and Midland counties asked state authorities for local institutions of higher education. A college district was established in 1957 and Delta College opened in September 1961. SVSU was first chartered as a private college in November 1963 with the name Saginaw Valley College. It became a state-supported college in 1965.[4][5] A post office named "University Center" was opened on July 16, 1961 to serve the institutions.[3] The ZIP code is designated as unique by the postal service, indicating that it is "used for a specific company or organization."[2] SVSU lies entirely within Saginaw County's Kochville Township, but is served by the University Center ZIP code. Delta College also lies entirely within Bay County's Frankenlust Township, but is also served by the University Center ZIP code. Sometimes there are certain instances that SVSU is considered to be part of the Saginaw ZIP code 48604. Similarly, Delta College is sometimes considered to be part of the Bay City ZIP Code 48706.[citation needed] [edit] References
