Universiti Teknologi MARA (Abbreviation: UiTM English: MARA University of Technology) is a Malaysian public university. The university motto is Usaha Taqwa Mulia (English: Effort, Devotion, Nobility). The main objective of this institution is to provide professional programmes of study in various fields including engineering, law, science, medicine, technology, business, arts and humanities as well as a research university.
[edit] SummaryUiTM is Malaysia's premier institution of higher learning that has experienced phenomenal growth since its inception in 1956. The university has expanded nationwide with 4 satellite campuses, 15 branch campuses, 9 city campuses and 19 affiliated colleges. With this vast network and a workforce of 15 000, the university offers more than 300 unparalleled academic programmes in a vibrant and inclusive environment. It is also home to almost 120,000 students comprising of only bumiputeras. UiTM is closely linked to the development of the independent Malaysian nation. It began in 1956 as Dewan Latehan RIDA (Rural and Industrial Development Authority Training Center) in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. The school became known as Maktab MARA (MARA College) in 1965. The name change meant that the college no longer operated under RIDA and instead became the most important unit of the MARA Training Division. MARA stands for Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Council of Trust for the Indigenous People) under the charismatic and dynamic leardership of Tan Sri Arshad Ayub. In 1967, the school was renamed as Institut Teknologi MARA. Its establishment came as a response to a need in Malaysia for trained professionals, especially among Bumiputeras. ITM's development took three major stages: From 1967 to 1976, ITM was an autonomous body with its own 300 acre (1.2 km²) campus in Shah Alam, operating under the Ministry of Rural Development. From 1976 to 1996, ITM advanced as an institution of higher learning and not only a professional training institute, operating directly under the Ministry of Education. In 1996, an amendment to the ITM Act of 1976 put ITM on a par with all the universities in Malaysia, but its historical name was retained until 1999. Then it became Universiti Teknologi MARA. It is called "UiTM" to differentiate it from UTM, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, which is a wholly separate university, based in Johor. [edit] History[edit] 1956-1965Dewan Latehan RIDA (Rural and Industrial Development Authority Training Center) RIDA Training Center was the inspiration of Dato' Onn Ja'afar, the founder and former president of United Malays National Organisation (UMNO). The idea was conceived as a result of a study visit of Ceylon's (now Sri Lanka) rural development programme in 1951.A working paper of the visit outlined the establishment of RIDA (Rural and Industrial Development Authority) and its objectives of rebuilding the rural society, as well as improving its economy. There were two centers under the auspices of the RIDA (Rural and Industrial Development Authority): Taman Asuhan RIDA (Kuala Lumpur) and Dewan Latehan RIDA (Petaling Jaya). Dewan Latehan RIDA began operations in November 1956 under its first principal, Tuan Syed Alwi bin Syed Sheikh Alhadi. It was officially opened by Dr. Ismail bin Dato' Abdul Rahman, the Minister for Trade and Industry on 14 February 1957. Dewan Latehan RIDA conducted several external professional courses offered by established international bodies, such as the London Chamber of Commerce, the Australian Chartered Secretaryship, the Australian Society of Accountants and the British Institute of Management. In 1964, Dewan Latehan RIDA held its first convocation and 50 graduates were awarded certificates by Tun Abdul Razak, the then Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia. [edit] 1965-1967Maktab MARA (MARA College) Dewan Latehan RIDA become known as Maktab MARA or MARA College in June 1965. The name change also meant that the college was no longer operated under RIDA but instead become the most important unit of the MARA Training Division. MARA, which is the acronym for "Majlis Amanah Rakyat" or the "Council of Trust for the Indigenous People" took over and strengthened the role and responsibilities of RIDA. In 1966, when the British Institute of Management ceased holding external examinations, MARA College began running its own Diploma in Business Studies. International recognition for the course came from Ealing Technical College of London, which also became its external examiner. This linkage with an internationally established institution proved to be the first of many future linkages, a tradition that started in 1956 with Dewan Latehan RIDA and still continues until today in UiTM. [edit] 1967-1999Institut Teknologi MARA (MARA Institute of Technology) MARA College was officially renamed Institut Teknologi MARA on 14 October 1967. Its establishment came as a response to a crucial need in the country for trained manpower in the professional and semi-professional levels, especially among Bumiputeras. This shortage was identified by a manpower survey conducted by the government in collaboration with the United Nations in 1965. ITM's rapid development during those years came about with the expansion of its educational programmes, which was in line with the requirements of an increasingly demanding job market. Many courses were internationally affiliated and the institute had advanced diploma courses, which were equivalent to a degree. ITM's development is best seen in three phases that cover a period of 32 years in total. The first phase (1967 - 1976) came with the declaration of the institute as an autonomous body with its own 300-acre campus in Shah Alam and was placed under the Ministry of Rural Development. The second phase (1976 - 1996) saw ITM rapidly harnessing its potential as an institution of higher learning. It led to the passing of the ITM Act of 1976 that placed the institute directly under the Ministry Of Education. The third phase (1996-1999) came about as a result of an amendment to the 1976 Act which put ITM on par with other universities in the country. For functional purposes, ITM was granted all the powers of a University but its historical name was retained until August 26, 1999. The main areas of change were as follows:
[edit] 26 August 1999Universiti Teknologi MARA (MARA University of Technology) In August 1999, the then Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato' Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad announced the change of name of ITM to Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiqqqqqqTM). With this acknowledgement from the government, a major restructuring exercise was carried out in order to consolidate the University's resources for optimum productivity. UiTM aspires to be world-class in all its endeavours and forges ahead in a direction that is in tandem with the latest developments in the world. As UiTM moves forward, it remains focused on academic excellence, innovation, socio-economic goals, worldwide accreditation, globalisation and new technologies in order to contribute to industry and national development. Act 173 was drafted for the establishment of UiTM. It is essential to the University as it provides guidelines for maintenance and smooth administration as well as other pertaining matters. The Act also serves as an acknowledgement of the institution’s transition from an institute to a university, and the authority it has to function like any other universities, such as to provide courses of studies and confer degrees at all levels, among others. [edit] Faculties and Learning CentresUniversity admission is open to Bumiputras and international students only, except for preparatory programmes conducted at INTEC where non-Bumiputras are admitted. It acts as the focal point of development and expansion to a network of 21 other campuses. In the year 2004, Shah Alam campus had approximately 36,000 full-time and 6,500 part-time students. There are 13 residential colleges within the campus that house no less than 16,800 students. Apart from that, many homes around the university also open their doors to off – campus students. This campus is very close to Shah Alam city centre- and therefore public facilities and services are within easy reach. An added advantage is the fact that Shah Alam is the hub for information technology and multimedia applications. It is also easily accessible via the major highways that link the city to strategic locations in the country. Presently, Shah Alam is host to 45.5% of the total number of students, while the rest are distributed over the other campuses, with Arau campus handling the biggest number (6.3%). These campuses provide excellent opportunities for Bumiputeras all over the country to pursue higher education and attain higher economic and social development. [edit] Satellite CampusesThere are presently four satellite campuses: Jalan Othman campus in Petaling Jaya, Section 17 campus, Puncak Perdana campus, and Puncak Alam campus. These campuses house specialist programmes and are different from branch campuses, which usually offer a bigger range of academic programmes.
[edit] Jalan Othman, Petaling Jaya campusJalan Othman campus is situated in the old part of Petaling Jaya and is less than a kilometre away from the old PJ town centre. These colleges differ from one to another in terms of accommodation where some colleges accommodate two students per room while some accommodate up to eight students per room. These colleges are not autonomous as they fall under the jurisdiction of UiTM. However, the director of each college has vast power endorsed to them in governing these colleges.
