The team is composed of some of the top American players in the WNBA and the women's college game. The team has won six Olympic gold medals and seven FIBA world championships, and did not lose an international match between 1994 and 2006. However, longtime leaders Dawn Staley, Lisa Leslie, and Teresa Edwards being absent, they lost to Russia in the semifinal of the 2006 world championship, settling for the bronze.
