The Unified WWE Tag Team Championship is the name used by the professional wrestling promotion World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) for the following two world tag team championships, which have been unified but kept active with separate title histories following WrestleMania XXV on April 5, 2009:[1][2]
Unified WWE Tag Team Championship reigns are determined by professional wrestling matches, in which competitors are involved in scripted rivalries. These narratives create feuds between the various competitors, which cast them as villains and heroes.
[edit] HistoryIn late 2008 and early 2009, WWE Tag Team Champions The Colóns (Carlito and Primo) feuded with the World Tag Team Champions John Morrison and The Miz, with the two teams exchanging victories in non-title matches and retaining their respective titles against each other.[3][4] On the March 17 edition of ECW, it was announced that at WrestleMania XXV both teams would defend their titles against each other and the winning team would hold both titles.[5] The Colons defeated Morrison and Miz, and thus unified the titles.[6] [edit] Brand designation
Although the Unified WWE Tag Team Championship is available on all the three brands of WWE, it is mostly defended on the brand to which the champions belong. When The Colóns were available on SmackDown, it was defended on SmackDown. When they were drafted to Raw, it was defended on Raw, although the Colóns faced tag teams from all three brands in non-title matches. However, during Chris Jericho and Edge's reign, the titles were available on SmackDown, but they were scheduled to defend it against Legacy (Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase) from Raw. The current champions, Chris Jericho and The Big Show (Edge's replacement after being injured) both belong to different brands. Chris Jericho is a member of the SmackDown brand while The Big Show is a member of the Raw brand. [edit] ReignsThe current champions are The Big Show and Chris Jericho, who are in their first reign as a team; it is also each man's first individual reign. Originally, Jericho and Edge had defeated unified champions The Colóns (Carlito and Primo) and fellow challengers The Legacy (Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase) in a Triple Threat tag team match at The Bash on June 28, 2009 in Sacramento, California to win both sets of titles.[7] On July 3, 2009, Edge suffered a torn Achilles tendon, which required surgery; as a result, Jericho was allowed to choose a new partner to hold both titles with at Night of Champions.[8] [edit] See also[edit] References
